Maybe, if we are content with a middle of his career Chad Pennington type of QB for 10 to 15 years.

I've heard a lot of comparisons for Darnold and Pennington is by far the most 'where the hell did that come from' one.

@DizzyDean, break down what reminds you of Pennington with Darnold if you don't mind.

When I think of Pennington I think

  • Noodle Arm
  • Injury Prone
  • Super conservative
  • No athleticism
  • Good feel for the pocket
  • Lack of big plays
  • Lack of turnovers
  • Cerebral

When I think of Darnold

  • Great arm strength and downfield accuracy
  • No injury concerns
  • Very aggressive
  • Athletic
  • Needs to improve pocket presence, especially regarding strip sacks
  • Play maker with legs and arm
  • Needs to cut down on turnovers
  • Cerebral

So they match on one bullet point.

See, I would disagree. They both have exactly eight bullet points to them.

Yeah, not defending the comp as I think there are much better ones. But we gotta remember that Pennington was a completely different QB pre-injuries.

...but not really. He still had a noodle arm and wasn't a great athlete. The noodle arm became an offensively bad arm with time, but nobody in the universe would argue that his arm was ever even "decent."

There are reasons to not be sold on Darnold, but throwing out a Chad Pennington comparison is probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen. Do you have a grab-bag filled with the names of failed QB's that you use to determine player comparisons? Because that's the only explanation to correlate Pennington and Darnold. Or significant amounts of heroin and bath salts.

The more I read mock drafts in this forum the more convinced I am that some people don't watch tape. It's clearly obvious who doesn't with some of the obnoxious takes I've seen.

I've seen Romo, Favre, Big Ben, etc as Darnold comparisons. I like the Romo one a lot. Pennington made me laugh.

Romo isn't bad. Basically anyone that's athletic and has a great deep ball both in terms of strength and accuracy fits the bill. He doesn't have a howitzer for an arm, but he's got more than enough juice to make every throw. I think his arm strength is a tad overstated, but it's still considered a strength of his. Darnold has the least amount of consistent zip on his throws from any of the top 4 QB's, but you'd be foolish to mark it down in his weakness category.

Allen/Mayfield/Rosen/Darnold in terms of zip and velocity on the ball.

Allen/Darnold/Mayfield/Rosen in terms of how far the ball can be thrown.

That being said, there are 0 red flags with any of the top QB's arms.

Obviously this is a ton of guys, but I want competition. I don’t care if we cut guys who played on a 0-16 team. 2019 needs would be runningback, 3-tech, and offensive line.

1. Sam Darnold, QB, USC

*Trade down with Buffalo for 12, 22, and 96*

1. Marcus Davenport, DE, UTSA

1. Joshua Jackson, CB, Iowa

2. Mike Hughes, CB, UCF

2. Josh Sweat, DE, FSU

2. Christian Kirk, WR, Texas A&M

3. Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, DE/OLB, Oklahoma

4. Will Clap, OG, LSU

5. Jaylen Samuels, FB / TE, NC State

5. Alex Cappa, OT, Humboldt State

6. Greg Senat, OT, Wagner
