Avatar was re-released in China this weekend and took back the all-time worldwide box office crown from Avengers: Endgame.

Until Endgame is re-released in about 5-6 years before the next big team up and then Avatar will be re-released, and then....

Bringing this back now that COVID-19 isn't killing everything.

-Spider-Man: No Way Home got things back to business last Christmas and would have joined the $2 billion club if not for China not showing it

-Top Gun: Maverick was a shocking monster with all-time great legs last summer, ending up at #5 on the all-time domestic chart

-Avatar: The Way of Water just moved into 3rd place at the all-time worldwide box office and will likely finish between Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther domestically in 7th place on the all-time chart

-Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has also shown some crazy good legs

-MCU movies last year all opened really well...but had no legs whatsoever (outside of some really solid late work from Black Panther: Wakanda Forever). This has been a trend for a few years now

-Pixar and Disney really need a big hit. They've had a bad couple of years. DreamWorks and Illumination both had really big hits last year

-Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania just got off to a good start with it's opening weekend domestically, but fizzled out internationally and has gotten poor audience reactions. We'll see how its legs hold, but it doesn't look promising

Disney+ has to be a big part of this.. for people like me, it's just so much easier to wait a bit and watch at home. It's pretty easy to avoid spoilers, and if not oh well

True. Audience and critical reception have all dropped.

Ant-Man 3 did not have the Sunday bump over Disney's estimates most people expected considering it's a holiday weekend. Could be an aberration, but could be WOM hurting it already.

Next weekend should be interesting, but I'm expecting a pretty big drop.

Sadly, there's another factor IMO - the quality of the movies, outside of No Way Home & Wakanda Forever, IMO has been lacking.    Some of it was the Phase 4 arc got completely tossed out the window with Covid / Boseman's death, but the reality is that the movie quality hasn't been nearly as good.

And it's been compounded by pretty mediocre TV show quality.   Loki/Hawkeye were great, and Ms. Marvel was decent (until they left the US)...but otherwise, nothing memorable.  It's created a lot of MCU fatigue IMO.

Oh, absolutely. They oversaturated the market and the quality has fallen.

There have been a couple bright spots, but overall the Multiverse Saga pales in comparison to the Infinity Saga, both in critical reception and fan response.

Hopefully they can turn things around.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is not doing well during the week. Could see a top 10 worst 2nd weekend drop of all-time.

Worst Wednesday for a 100+ mil opening ever. Though the big storm certainly played a role in that.

Oh yeah. Still early, but could end up with BvS legs. Probably won't be that bad, but it'll be bad. The last few MCU movies have all had bad legs, so we'll see how this ends up stacking up.

It's actually trending worse than BvS right now.
