El Ramster
Honestly I think Irving is overrated but that’s because of the raw data that’s provided. I never saw him play but his numbers look whack as hell. Steve Smith all day. But if Pablo Escobar was looking for a runner, Irving all day. He put up some gaudy stats, including once topping 1600 yds receiving, even though he had to share the ball with RB Emmitt Smith and TE Jay Novacek, both Pro Bowlers. Crazy to check the career stats and see Smith more fumbles in his rookie season (8) than Irvin did in his entire 12-yr career (7).

mdonnelly21
Michael Irvin is clearly ahead on my all time list. However, during their primes it's close. Both very physical receivers, I would take Steve Smith I think in his prime over Irvin.

AFlaccoSeagulls
It's kind of hard to evaluate them because one played with Troy Aikman and the other played with Jake Delhomme. In terms of who is more talented and would thrive regardless of QB, it's gotta be Steve Smith.
tom cody
Steve Smith for me as well. Both were good WR's though.
bootsy
Wow this is a serious topic. Michael Irvin is an all time great, one of the leaders for his team and HOFer. Steve Smith is stat accumulator and didn't impact the game.

ATX hombre
Steve Smith is incredibly underrated, arguably the best YAC receiver ever and arguably the best blocking receiver ever
NFLExpert49
I prefer Smith's game, but "push off" Irvin was nearly unguardable. Smith got stuck with some of the lamest QBs of any historic great, however. Pound for pound the strongest receiver in history.
TheFinisher
Only someone not old enough to have seen Irvin play and is just comparing raw statistics across eras would think this is an actual debate. From 91-95, Irvin was probably the best WR in the NFL. In a league that had Jerry Rice, Cris Carter, and Tim Brown in their primes. He was a first down machine for Dallas, and put up those numbers while playing in an offense that featured Emmitt Smith. It's even more impressive when you consider Dallas typically built big leads in the 1st half and just fed Smith for the 2nd half, so he not only maximized his opportunities, he paced the league. At time of his retirement following 1999 season [1st] Most Games 100 or More Yards Receiving, Season - 11 (1995) [Tied for 1st] Most Consecutive Games 100 or More Yards Receiving, Season - 7 (1995) [3rd] Most Games 100 or More Yards Receiving, Career - 47 [Tied for 3rd] Most Seasons 1,000 or More Yards Receiving - 7 (1991-1995, 1997-1998) Super Bowl Records [Tied for 2nd] Most Touchdowns, Game - 2 (SB XXVII vs. Buffalo) [Tied for 2nd] Most Touchdowns Receiving, Game - 2 (SB XXVII vs. Buffalo) [Tied for 3rd] Most Touchdowns Receiving, Career - 2 Post-Season Records [2nd] Most Receptions, Career - 87 [2nd] Most Yards Receiving, Career - 1,315 [2nd] Most Games 100 or More Yards Receiving, Career - 6 [Tied for 2nd] Most Receptions, Game - 12 (vs. San Francisco, Jan. 15, 1995)
