Based on his response to any fractures being involved, I 100% think there was a fracture involved which explains going to the spinal specialist. He's a terrible liar....well I guess he didn't really lie, but just reading his body language and his hesitancy to answer the question makes me think he had some sort of fracture. Just my opinion.

it's really the combination of injuries and mediocre/poor play. honestly, all of the excuses about the injuries would be completely fine with me if marcus had proven that he can play at a high level consistently. i'd be 100% in favor of extending a wentz, luck, watson (idk about garoppolo lol). but marcus can't even sniff their level of play. he hasn't come remotely close in 2 years.

I do think this is an good snapshot or example that the days of Rivers and Manning iron Man streaks are over.

This new age of QB will get you get you guys that miss time.

You'd hope that they are around when you need them the most. But they are going to miss time.

And honestly Wentz has performed more consistently than Marcus but he has been just as unavailable in CRUCIAL games. Missing last years run and this years.

Let's also be honest about Luck. He couldn't throw a football a little under a year ago. He was throwing tennis balls it something right?

Watson has the same problem reading defenses if not worst, but has a better arm and throwing to a wr that saves him. Collapsed lung this year and torn ACL last year. Million hits this year too.

As far as injuries are concerned, we talking about injuries not his play, but injuries, Marcus isn't alone with his struggles.

The question has now become, if he starts and finishes 16 games next year what do you do?

I think franchise, but they may go with a contract.

Franchise him without question. Make him prove he can do it again. Obvious answer for me personally.

You'd have to also add the question on how he plays and how the team finishes.

If he plays all games or only missed one and we are say 11-5. I think he gets a new deal.

But if he struggled with that record. Franchise.

If he plays a full season but is still struggling wouldn't it be pretty clear that we need to move on?

Let me clarify. Not struggle. But not impressed I guess. 3200 yards 16TDs 7 INTs.

Winning has to count for something tho.

In this scenario I think it also depends on what our coaches and FO think about the 2020 QB class and/or FA options.

The ideal scenario is still Marcus taking a significant step next season. And if he misses one game (say a sprained wrist) but leads us to 11 or 12 wins with a pro-bowl caliber year, I doubt they’re gonna hold that one game against him, nor should they.

However, I have seen nothing the last 2 years that inspires much confidence in the ideal scenario actually happening.

I can't say this enough.  The thing that will help FIX Mariota, or help see what we really have, is the same thing that revived Andrew Luck and that's a solid O-line.   We need to upgrade or OGs and solidify that line once and for all.  Keep Marcus clean and stop taking all these ridiculous beatings.  That's first and foremost IMO.

If that’s all he’s doing by year 5 then winning will have a lot to more to do with everything around him. I would be confident in the surrounding parts to produce similar results with a rookie QB of Robinson’s choosing that we don’t have to pay a boatload for. In that case it would allow us to invest even more heavily in the surrounding parts to get us on par with where Marcus had us or perhaps even better.

This is just for me but if he doesn’t have atleast as good of a year as he had in his sophomore season while on top of it isn’t able to stay healthy then I’m ready to move on. If he does, I want to franchise him and make him prove that it wasn’t a fluke.

I agree. The OL fix and speeding up his release of the ball helped the Caveman a lot. JRob needs to fix the interior of the OL. Lefluer needs to fix Mariota.

The problem with all those examples outside of Smith is that none of them were injury prone. I don't want to break the bank on a guy who has largely been below average his last 2 years and can't stay on the field who all of a sudden has a good 2019 season in which he stays healthy. That would be fools gold and an outlier I can't buy in to. If something like that does happen, I'm franchising him to make him prove he can do it again and then we can talk long-term deals.

Brees was actually pretty injury prone. Missed 5 games one year, another the following, and while he didn't miss any games that last year there, he suffered that gruesome shoulder injury the last game there... That's when he hit free agency.

As I posted previously, Mariota took over 90% of the snaps in both 2016 and 2017. This year he fell under 80 for the 2nd time (78% this year, 71% his rookie year). I get the frustration and he definitely needs to do better... But it's not as bad as many make it out to be.

He's played in one week 17 game in his career. Missed time due to injury in 25% of his career games and is playing hurt often.

It's definitely been pretty bad.

He's injured all the time, but they're usually not season ending, as opposed to someone being healthy 3 out of 4 years and suffering a season ending injury in week 6 causing them to miss more snaps than Mariota over a 4 year career.

That person isn't injury prone for 1 fluke injury compared to 5-7 injuries for Mariota depending on how you want to group the 3 injuries this year.
