Alex Smith has been a terrible fit in Gruden's offense so far.  Go back and watch the Redskins games this year, they have been winning games in spite of Alex Smith not because of him.

Still baffled by this. Thought this was going to be a great pairing. No idea what happened

He certainly wasn't helping the 9ers. His game 'skills' declined steadily after that Super Bowl fail.

Nor was the rest of the offense, the coaching staff, the front office or the defense after 2013. Some dark times there lol

Its because Gruden's scheme heavily leans on medium length passing routes (meaning not deep but not short routes) and Alex Smith refused to push the ball down the field.

Unfortunately for Washington, he won't retire from it even if it were. His salary next year is fully guaranteed I believe, with no guarantee date (IE, not guaranteed on the third day of the league year or anything so far as I know like his 2020 salary - it's just guaranteed). If he can't play, that's going to be pretty brutal for them in that regard. While his cap hit isn't onerous or anything for a quarterback, it's pretty bad for a quarterback who won't play a down for them if that were to be the case.

Smith's 2019 salary was guaranteed at signing of his extension.

His 2020 salary becomes fully guaranteed on the 5th day of the 2019 league year.

There's an open question whether the 2020 salary is guaranteed for injury or not.

I'll just patiently wait here for 2-3 weeks for your tune to change about Alex Smith, because I guarantee it will once you've had a full dose of Colt McCoy or Mark Sanchez.

Death by crucifixion, death by evisceration, and death by scaphism (look that one up ... but not while eating) are all painful, slow, horrible ways to die.

Dan Snyder will never allow it either. Ignore all the other stuff about him, the guy still has no desire to put together a team that actually wins games.

I mean, Kaepernick hasn't played a game in two years or so.  Is he in game shape?  Is he mentally ready to go?  He's not someone you bring in as a mid-season backup right now regardless of the off-field distraction concerns.  At least with Sanchez, it's a guy who has worked with three of our coaches, including the QB/Passing Coordinator and the Offensive Coordinator.  He should pick up the offense as quickly as anyone.

Word from the team is that there was no ligament damage found during surgery, and that this is a 6-8 month recovery time for Smith.  So best case scenario is that he resumes football activities following the NFL draft, worst case scenario is that he's ready right around the time training camp begins.

So ... he's potentially going to miss most if not all of the offseason workouts and thus be unable to get in sync with the rest of the offense? That means that excuse is still valid going into the 2020 season? Joy ... -_-

33 years to the day that Theisman's leg snapped like a twig.

Thiesmans jersey number was 7.

Alex smiths jersey number is 11.

7+11 = 18 (november 18th)

- Theismann broke his leg in a home game in Washington DC. Smith broke his leg in a home game in Washington DC.

- The final score in both games was 23-21.

- 3 time DPOY Lawrence Taylor was in on the play that broke Theismann's leg. 3 time DPOY JJ Watt was in on the play that broke Smith's leg.

- Both Smith and Theismann were on the 40 yard line when they got hit.
