Marcus Smith

This is one tough crowd 😂

I don’t see much to complain about here. Obviously a big-time bust to this point. But turns out there aren’t too many successful/talented young players at premium positions sitting at home waiting for a phone call in December. And the athletic ability with Smith is undeniable — he outperformed Demarcus Lawrence across the board when they were both at the combine in 2014. He’s shown some flashes of brilliance in his career, maybe there’s still a chance he can play.

Obviously, there’s almost no chance we unlock something that Philly and Seattle were unable to. But what’s the downside? This is the time to roll the dice and see if you hit on a longshot, because there’s nothing to lose. Give him some pass rush snaps and see what he’s got. If he sucks, fine. We should be in tank mode at this point anyway. If he shows out with a few big plays, fantastic. That’s found money.

Even if all we get out of it is doing a solid for Todd France (who appears to be his agent) by giving this guy a chance and a check, it’s still worthwhile if all we have to give up is a vet minimum salary and a roster spot for 4 meaningless games.

Didn't Vernon Gholston do the same thing?

If we're supposed to applaud signing random guys, why not at least at positions of major need (guard, QB) as @MKnight82 pointed out above?

They signed Josh Johnson at QB and some guy named Zac Kerin at OG.

No one’s saying you have to to applaud it, just get a little tired of the constant knee-jerk refrain that every move must be stupid just because the Redskins made it and they’re a bunch of blithering idiots and drooling Neanderthals who couldn’t stumble into a decent move with a treasure map and a seeing eye dog.

This isn't a dumb move. It probably (almost certainly) turns into nothing in the long run, but it’s a virtually zero risk-moderate reward signing. They filled all their roster “needs” and used the extra spot left open by Trey Quinn on a premium/long term need position player who, just a couple years ago, a lot of people thought could be a star. That’s not an “incompetent” move.

It's okay, keep going. I'll stop you when you're wrong.

Cannot speak to Kerin, but signing Josh Johnson is a quintessential JAG signing. Heck, he's not even a competent backup.

Had they taken a guy who hadn't bombed out of both Philadelphia and Seattle (two organizations that have much better track records of developing talent than the Redskins did), I might shrug and say "well, they got someone."

Still, if they needed to fill Anderson's spot, why not go pillage some other squad's practice squad for a player? At least there's the possibility of upside of a young player. Both guys are going to have zero idea of the defensive calls/responsibilities, but at least one has the chance at future value.

Is it a dumb move? No.

But I disagree that it's a moderate reward signing. You yourself concede that it has little chance of panning out.

Totally agree, there’s no downside to signing Marcus Smith. Seattle did so in the offseason hoping to untapped his potential and get something out of it. Signing him in December and keeping him this offseason and developing him in our system in the spring and next summer could prove to be wise, most likely it doesn’t work out, but you just never know.
