I do wonder if he had just stuck it out as their OC for the last couple of years, if that might have happened. But he didn't, and now he'll never sniff a HC job in the NFL again. Team needed a refresh and new ideas, instead they are getting Belichick-lite. Except he's never called plays, just started coaching in 2019 and has only worked in the Pats organization.
