Damn, really sucks to see Murphy go. I like that guy and he was the most consistent hitter the Nats had in 2017.

I understand he wasn’t going to be back anyways for the reasons Slateman explained a while back but still, he was good hitter for us.

No.

So, the July 31 is the "non-waiver" deadline. It means any player whose contract permits it, may be traded.

After the July 31st deadline, is the waiver deadline (August 31). It means that in order to trade a player, the player must be placed on the waiver wire. Waiver wire in MLB works like it does in the NFL. Anyway, if a player is claimed by another team, the player's team has three options:

1. Revoke the player from the waiver wire. The team retains the players services/contract.

2. Trade claimed player

3. Let the player go for nothing.

Generally, teams put most, if not all, of their players on waivers. If they don't want to trade them or let them go, they simply recall them from the waiver wire. If no other team claims the player within 48 hours of being placed on the waiver wire, then the owning team is free to trade that player to whomever they want prior to the deadline, barring a no trade clause or a 10/5 ruling.

The Nationals put a bunch of players on waivers. It would appear that Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy, and Matt Adams were all claimed by a team. The Nationals have 48 hours to complete a deal, pull the player off waivers, or simply let them go.

The Washington Nationals have traded second baseman Daniel Murphy to the Chicago Cubs and sent first baseman Matt Adams to the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Cubs sent Class A minor league infielder Andruw Monasterio and a player to be named or cash considerations to Washington for Murphy. The Cardinals sent cash considerations to the Nationals for Adams.
