The Miami Marlins say "hi."

Let's see... Miami's...

1st

2nd

3rd

4th

7th

8th

10th (stopped there)

best prospects came to them during their "fire sale." They went from the worst farm system to one of the better farm systems.

Keep in mind that if we had traded him, we would be starting Hellickson/Fedde more often. We got a "bad Gio" game; there will be "good Gio" games too. There is no "good Hellickson/Fedde" game unless Martinez gets smart and plays the two of them as part of a deal where they only get two times through the lineup or 85 pitches before getting pulled regardless. The two of them could combine to a solid 7-8 inning starter and give the bullpen a day off.

But that's not happening. Just like players bunting against the switch.

Fedde is hurt. Hes not coming back until September. We would have started Milone sooner.

I'd rather dump Gio's salary, get under the luxury tax threshold, and start Milone.

That's what I'm guessing.

That is obviously correct. Ownership doesnt write an open letter like that unless they're the reason for not selling.

And it's going to bite this team in the ***, hard. They'll come up short at the end of the season. They didnt want to lose ticket sales on a lost season, so they overruled Rizzo. But the team will come up short. Maybe they fire Martinez, maybe they dont. It wont matter because they wont want to pay the luxury tax penalties on the free agents necessary to keep this team competitive through the next couple years. Without an influx of talent, itll take more time to develop the talent we have. Meanwhile, Zimmerman, Scherzer, and Strasburg will all decline, and their contracts will feel like albatrosses (like the Werth deal).

Hope we all enjoy .500 baseball. Going to be a while before the Nats can contend again. But, hey, they didnt "give up" on this season. Even though their players did back in June.

Trading Harper wasn’t going to change most of what you said.

And Zimmerman is already in decline.

If/when Bryce leaves, his production has been replaced by Juan Soto. They have Eaton, Taylor and Robles. They can re-sign Murphy and Matt Adams to help the loss of Bryce as well.

Yes, they should’ve traded Bryce but it really doesn’t change much what the issues are with this team. They don’t have an offensive problem if everyone is healthy. This year, injuries, having crappy catchers and Bryce buckling under the pressure of having to perform in a contract year have doomed the team this year.

Trading Harper alone? No. Trading Harper, Murphy,  Gio, Madson, Kelley, Kintzler, and Hellickson? Yea .... yea it would have helped. It would have brought back the low level prospects that Rizzo has known to use to make deals with.

Adams will want, and deserve, to start. He'll be 30 and want another contract. Murphy cant play second with his knees anymore. So first base or a DH. And that isnt happening here.

Next year's crop of free agents looks, right now, pretty good. But with the Nats getting penalized for going under the luxury tax threshold,  it's unlikely the team will be willing to address their needs, fully.

Why stop there? Trade Scherzer, Zimmerman, Doolittle, Strasburg, Rendon, Doolittle and Herrera!

Lets just field a Major League type lineup!

Make is so the team is a bunch of players under 30, really young prospects and some back up quality free agents.

I mean, the only way to get better is to get awful right?

Slate has been going about this song and dance for years. Every year the window is closing. The only reason the team is out of first place this season is due to injuries and awful managing. You can blame Harpers struggles as well. It’s been a down year, crap happens. They’ll be fine going forward and they don’t need to dump all of their talent.

Although I will admit, they should’ve got rid of Gio. Got what they could’ve and moved on. He’s done.
