SINGAPORE Week 3

Motivation - Give Anchorage the loss they’ve been begging for.

Offensive Strategy

Formations:  Bunch formation using trips - single back - TE / 2 wide - 2 TE - RB

Scheme:  Pass (50%) vs Run (50%)

Rushing

Position Depth:  Le’Veon Bell / James Conner / Latavius Murray

Our goal this week is to use our tailbacks to develop a stable vertical passing game.  To achieve this, we’ll be utilizing bunch formations to get more blockers near the line of scrimmage to assist in second level blocking off the edge.  We feel that increasing our rushing attempts in this game, specifically off tackle; will force Anchorage to reduce the number of times they bring the blitz off the edge (Cam Jordan / Sam Hubbard).

The Anchorage defense utilizes their linebackers in coverage more than most in my opinion, possibly due to a weaker cornerback group or perhaps it’s as simple as his defense runs predominately zone coverages and the linebackers are key in making this work.  To defend against this, our interior rushing game will be a mix of the run pass option (RPO), play action and delayed handoffs.  We want their linebackers guessing their coverage assignment and zone reads while bunched receivers flood the interior’s second level.  We’ll also be using pre-snap motion to expose man coverage assignments as well as shifting blocking assignments running to the heavy side of the offense.

Relying on a heavier run game this week we believe that by utilizing the bunch formations, play action and RPO will force the Wolves to tighten their coverage inside the box, opening up the field for the passing attack.

Passing

Using Bunch as our primary formation this week, including receiving option routes designed to find space in zone coverage.  We feel this is a great scheme to combat the Anchorage defense when in zone and pre snap movement will indicate man coverage.  We favor the matchups against a porous secondary that Rodgers shouldn’t have any issue moving the chains, by employing a quick passing game that includes our back on swing and flat routes.  While our bunched receiving core of Josh Gordon/WR, Keenan Allen/Slot, Darren Waller/TE, and Corey Davis/WR flood the field with a variety of routes (slants, crossing, dig and fly primarily).

Bunch formations will also be used in shotgun spreading out the line of scrimmage, grouping a combination of receiver and TE to one side out wide, single back and Josh Gordon by himself opposite the grouped receivers.  Looking to get Gordon on an island by himself on go routes or having a variety of options within trips to get the first.

Eventually, we want Aaron Rodgers airing it out against a secondary that we feel favors us, but coming out tossing bombs takes a little prep work and we believe combining a heavier rushing game (50/50), running both pass and rush from identical formations, option routes to find space in zone coverage, utilizing RPO, play action to freeze the linebackers ultimately gives Rodgers and company the edge.

Pass Protection

I mentioned slowing down the blitz off the edge by utilizing the rush and by design the play action and RPO gives us a running back/blocker inside the pocket.  Bunch formation puts a tight end left and/or right of tackle, depending on the receiving group used.  Pre snap movement to assist in blocking and expose defensive scheme for quick passing when in man coverage.

Defensive Strategy

Formation:  34 Defense | 3-3-5 / 3-2-6

Scheme:  Cover 3 Zone / Cover 2 Man

Pass Defense

It would not surprise us at all if we don’t see another quarterback change this week; as Kirk Cousins is clearly struggling to replicate his past performances.  While on the bench, Andy Dalton is quietly racking up the yardage.  So we’re prepared to face either in this matchup.

Our focus this week is stopping the passing game, plan and simple; while we respect Anchorage’s running game we know that the real strength of this team lies within their quality at receiver.  This unit has several solid receivers in Boyd, Kupp, Agholor, Kittle as well as threats at tailback in Ingram and Lewis.  However, we are confident that our secondary is up to the task of preventing this passing game from developing this week.

Our main defensive formation will consist of the 3-3-5 (Nickel) alternating between a mix of Cover 3 Zone and Cover 2 Man.  In my opinion, this formation is putting our best 11 on the field thus giving our defense the best chance to dismantle their passing game.   This formation also provides our defense more flexibility in blitz packages getting safety, inside backers and even the inside corner at times involved against a pretty good offensive line in tackles Armstead and James along with guard/tackle La’el Collins.

Coverage Assignments when in Man:

·         Boyd / Jason McCourty-CB

·         Kupp / Bradley Roby-CB

·         Agholor / Jonathan Jones-CB

·         Kittle / John Johnson-SS

·         Ingram / Deion Jones-LB

Additional coverage support includes the following, proving a solid rotation preventing fatigue from ever becoming a factor in this matchup.

o   Kareem Jackson-FS

o   Tracy Walker-SAF

o   Desmond King-CB

o   Trae Waynes-CB

The Blitz

As mentioned this defense will be bringing different looks bringing blitz packages from secondary and backer positions.  While we’ve got great respect for most of this Anchorage offensive line, it does have a few holes at center and guard.  So we’ll look to exploit those areas by keeping the pressure for the bulk of the game.  Getting Aaron Donald involved in stunt blitzes and just letting him do what he does best in the 3 tech, by driving the blitz inside while providing box safety support against the rush.  In addition, blitzing off the edge by our outside backers, we believe will be enough to disrupt this Anchorage offensive line to put a constant amount of pressure on either quarterback.

Rush Defense

For the past two weeks of bdl gaming, the Wolves have given Ingram the bulk of the carries, 75% & 80% respectfully.  Now, I’m not sure what that will be this week but we don’t believe that Ingram is that type of back.  His 9 year career he’s only started in 60% of his 108 games.  Statistically speaking, Ingram has never received this volume of attempts.  At 29 years of age and sharing a 49% workload with fellow Baltimore backs Gus Edwards and Justice Hill, include attempts from Lamar Jackson and RGIII and his load decreases even more.

Ingram # of attempts / Team RB total # of Attempts

·         2011 – 30.3%

·         2012 – 44.6%

·         2013 – 22.5%

·         2014 – 61.2%

·         2015 – 45.6%

·         2016 – 55.3%

·         2017 – 62.7%

·         2018 – 35.9%

·         2019 – 49.1%

Now this isn’t a knock against what he can do when he does have the ball, because he can play, we just don't believe he can do it 70 to 80% of the time.  Otherwise, the above stats would have him in that range at least once in his career.

Our game plan against the rush is to lock down the passing game and force them to beat us with their running game.  We’ve got quality players at the line and within our backers that we are confident that we can slow this running game down at least within the first two quarters, where we anticipate a lead great enough that forces Anchorage into abandoning the ground game.

Anchorage Wolves

Team:

This week we welcome Singapore up to the Great Northwest. Somehow we have managed to remain competitive this season…we have benched Kirk Cousins for The Red Rifle, hopefully this motivates Cousins.

Offensive Formations:

Our base offense this week will be the 2TE set (Double Hawkeye). We will line up Tyler Boyd and Cooper Kupp outside at receiver and have George Kittle as TE1 and Noah Fant as TE2. We also once again feature a three wide (Tyler Boyd, Preston Williams outside and Cooper Kupp in the slot), one tight (George Kittle), one back set. Our RB rotation will be Mark Ingram (80%), Tony Pollard (10%) and Jamaal Williams (10%). Simple formation usage with a lot of motions to change around these basic formations.

Offensive Philosophy Passing Game (Double Hawkeye):

We are going to balance out our offense this week by running a heavy dose of our two tight formation. What we call “Double Hawkeye” (Both TE’s are from Iowa). We will still motion our TE’s out to test coverages as well as our back to go empty, keeping a TE in on certain plays to chip block before his release, and still having four pass options. We will mix this up often to throw off the Singapore defense. We will run combo routes with our athletic Tight Ends and our Receivers to attack different layers of zones, provide clearing areas in man, and allowing Dalton to pick his best matchups. We want to always have our quick options as first reads as the Singapore pass rush is very good.  When our RB remains in the backfield he will have pass blocking responsibilities as well as some chip and release into the flats when we are running some deeper combo concepts with our TE and WR to either side of the field. However if they are bringing five rushers the back will stay in to help pass block. If their rush is getting over aggressive we will utilize some screens to our back. Against a Safety brought down into the box, we will have some quick hitters right behind him in vacated spaces, and this opens up the middle of their defense.

Offensive Philosophy Running Game (Double Hawkeye):

A great aspect of our Double Hawkeye formation is the balance in our running game and it provides us with some great options and variance to our run game. So this week our run game will be a balance of zone and power/man combos. We will run traditional zone and have an extra hole to hit on either side for our RB’s. So instead of having just off tackle on the weak side with no one helping to block the outside contain or anyone outside of the tackle we now have a TE out there to extend the line of scrimmage. Other times we will have the TE double down with the tackle and work to the LBer or S in the box to seal off more of the inside providing bigger outside runs. And running power combos we have a really great element to this formation with Aaron Donald being in a 5tech position it allows the strength of our Oline which is our Tackles to match up on their best player. We can combo with the guard and tackle on Donald on runs and move our TE to the OLB. We will do this frequently especially if Donald is dictating our run lanes. Our zone stretch to Donal’s side will be the G and C combo blocking Donald, the T blocking the OLB, the TE sealing off the in the box Safety, Nickel back, or LBer to that side, the opposite G zone blocks the NT, the opposite T from the play blocks Montravius Adams or whoever plays that other end spot, and our TE chips the backside pursuit of the OLB to slow them down before moving to LBer or S at the second or third level. We will also run heavy at Montravius Adams, who has not been good this season, (or whoever plays for him in his place) while cutting off the backside pursuit. We can easily win our one on one matchups against Adams or any other end option they have opposite Donald with our oline. We really like the balance and any play can be ran to either side creating quick adjustments and not allowing the defense to favor any particular side. We will also motion our TE’s to the slot by widening them out thus widening out the defense and creating optimal run lanes inside. Another aspect of this formation is to motion a TE to a HBack position or Double Tight on one side to really allow us to run some power and throw another look at Singapore after we have been using our balanced set throughout the game. This is also a formation we will use on the goaline frequently, and short yardage to go situations. The Double Hawkeye allows us to take advantage if they want to run their 1 ILB defense with Jaylon Smith. We have a hat on a hat and constantly have blockers peeling off.

Offensive Philosophy Three Wide:

We will also run a 3 Wide Formation as stated above. This formation allows us to bring in the rookie Preston Williams at WR (backed up by Nelson Agholor as the 4th). This allows us to combo route a bit differently with two receivers on one side, as well as with the other WR and TE on the other side. What we will also do with this formation is essentially run a trips with Preston Williams, Cooper Kupp and George Kittle from his TE position on one side, isolating Tyler Boyd on the other side. If they play man we believe Boyd can beat any of their corners in isolation, giving Dalton that option on one side while also having a trips option on the other. In this formation the back will also chip and release into the flat on Boyd’s side. So if Boyd is doubled or successfully covered he will be a clear out for that flat play. We also will motion Kittle out to create twins on both sides of the formation as another wrinkle in our offense. We are going to run our typical zone runs out of this 3 wide with motion flexibility formation mixed with our power, allowing us to spread out the defense and take advantage.

We will primarily utilize these two formations with the motions listed to play uptempo without allowing the defense substitutions, and maximize our personnel against Singapore’s.

Defensive Formations:

Our base D is a 4-2-5 under this week. There will be three corners on the field against two tight and three wide sets. If they run a two back one tight end formation we will run a 4-3 with Budda moving back to FS. Jarrad Davis if healthy will be the third LBer if not Cole Holcomb (the rookie starting MLB for the Redskins) will be the third backer. If 4 wide Trumaine Johnson will come in, the game and the NT comes out. It will be explained more thoroughly below.

Defensive Philosophy Pass Rush/Run Fits:

We are going to run some different stunts and blitz combos to create pressure but also to counter the patience of Leveon Bell as a runner. We will really bring it inside where Lane Taylor is now on IR, and Billy Turner has surrendered two sacks in two games. We will rotate our edge players and our interior dline to keep them fresh. We will run our traditional pass rush front on long to go situations and clear passing downs against their 3 wide or less offense. Cam Jordan and Ed Oliver at DT and Sam Hubbard and Trey Flowers on the edge. Jamie Collins is a starter this week at WLB after his great performance last week. Typical gap control and responsibilities will be utilized by our front 7. Joe Schobert will communicate calls to the rest of the defense. If they run the four wide, Landon will come down in the box, Jamie Collins moves to a stand up edge on the Weakside, and Trey Flowers does the same on the Strongside, while Cam Jordan and Sam Hubbard slot in as the DT’s, and the NT Vea/Hargrave comes off the field.

Defensive Philosophy Blitz/Coverage:

With Budda Baker playing the nickel we believe he is going to be a big asset against the run as well as against Keenan Allen who lines up in the slot for Singapore. We expect Mecole Hardman will get a healthy role in this game, and if they go four wide or empty Trumaine Johnson lines up outside, and Breeland slides into the dime role. We will run 75% man coverage and 25% cover 2. 25% of our man we will use cover 2 shells over the top and not blitz.. We expect Singapore to want to attack us deep. Schobert will cover Bell and Jamie Collins will cover Waller. We will blitz 75% of the time when we are in man though and we will alternate blitzing Schobert or Jamie Collins. On these plays whichever LBer is not blitzing has the RB and Landon has the TE. If they go four wide we will alternate between coverages but will not blitz. If they go empty we will use a cover 3. Our DB’s will play press to throw off route timing.

Go Wolves! Give them our Bologna!

All that trash talk about Ingram and he sure outperformed Bell today

We are just saying he's never ever gotten 80% of the carries. Even this week he got 50%. You are going to run him into the ground so he'll be gassed later in the BDL game.

The Chiefs defense is almost non existent whereas Bell is going against a top 5 this week with a 3rd string QB and together they totaled 105 yds.

Andy Dalton sinks this one, plus the excellent gameplan from SirA pointing out various things is very enlightening. Don't agree with the Ingram usage though because that's more of the fact he played for the saints than anything and he always rotated with Sproles/Kamara/Pass catching RB.

This is a much closer game because of Ingram's performance but I cannot overlook Dalton in this one.

Fair....I believe he's a solid back just not an every down back.  He's never gotten more than 63% of the workload regardless what team he's been on, that's all I was saying.  Wasn't Kamara drafted because Ingram wasn't a full time back.  He also shared carries with Tim Hightower in '15 and '16 and still didn't get anywhere near 80% of the carries.  Again, he's respected in the plan.  Anyway, I thought it was something worth pointing out as it ties into our plan.

Appreciate the comments of our plan, spent some time on it.
