Lancaster Werewolves

Lancaster Offensive Strategy: We're facing a tough New Orleans defense here today with a lot of talent but we're confident we have the talent to put up points against them. Our offensive game plan is to stay balanced and focused on getting the ball out quickly to avoid having the New Orleans pass rush from throwing us off our objective. Our OL is solid across the board to keep their defensive front from controlling the game and with the personnel we have at receiver we figure we will provide Rivers the time needed to execute the quick short passing game to move the chains and eat the clock.

The Passing Strategy:  We want to mostly keep our passing game in the short to intermediate range to keep the offense flowing quickly. Sterling Shepherd being back will be a big boost to this style of offense as well. Of course we will be mixing in deep shots to keep their defense honest. We’re going to be spreading the ball around because we’ve got tons of talented receiving weapons on our team. On any given play it is likely that at least one of them will be somewhat open. We’ll be wanting our RBs to get involved in the pass game a decent amount (especially Miles Sanders) but we’ll mostly be keeping them in as an extra blocker to further mitigate New Orleans pass rush. To make a long story short we want to spread the ball around in the short to intermediate range and get the ball out of Rivers’ hands quickly.

The Running Strategy: Despite losing Kamara we’ve got a new starting level RB to lead our RB by committee in Matt Breida. We’ll be looking to get him going with the bulk of the carries while getting the other guys involved occasionally as well. We’ve got one of the stronger RB stables in the league so between the 4 guys we’ve got active we’ll be keeping people fresh and attacking New Orleans in different ways.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy: Our gameplan is simple. There is only one way to beat this New Orleans offense and that is to make Josh Allen beat you. Whether that’s possible with New Orleans’ offensive talent is the real question. We think we match up well here. We plan on taking away the running game (as much as you can against Ezekiel Elliot anyways) and the short passing game and we want to force Josh Allen to beat us deep.

The Pass Defense Strategy: We expect New Orleans to stay consistent with their starting formation here but assume obvious adjustments if they come out differently. We’ll be running our 4-2-5 man coverage defense against them. Jalen Ramsey will be taking on Michael Thomas with help from Eddie Jackson. James Bradberry will cover DJ Moore (go Terps!) and Jaire Alexander will cover Tyler Lockett. Vonn Bell will again be playing up in the box and covering Ezekiel Elliot out of the backfield. Kwon Alexander will be covering Zach Ertz. Bobby Wagner will be playing a shallow zone because we want to take away some of the shorter routes and force Allen to go deep, where he struggles mightily. Just like our WRs are too talented to be totally contained by NO’s CBs, their WRs will get their wins in the passing game but with our secondary playing the way it has, I expect to have a good amount of success against them.

As far as the pass rush goes, NO has a good OL. The biggest weakness there is Andrew Whitworth. Our pass rush is pretty formidable, especially from the outside. That’s where we’ll do our damage. Throughout the game we’ll be subbing newly acquired Shaq Barrett in for Wagner and using him as a pass rushing specialist. We’ll be lining him up in different spots to get after Allen but we’ll especially be lining him up on the same side as Bosa against Whitworth and letting them both loose.

The Run Defense Strategy: We’ve got an extra guy in the box with Bell who is specifically watching the RB. As we’ve been saying this whole time, NO will get theirs but we feel good about our chances at stopping them on a regular basis. Our entire DL is good at stopping the run as well.

New Orleans Jazz

Offense:

We return to New Orleans and with our geographical familiarity we also bring a familiarity in play style as our focus on limiting turnovers, controlling the clock and smash mouth football returns.

With the addition of arguably the best tackle in football with Mitchell Schwartz, we’re confident we can run on anybody, even a defense as good as Lancaster’s.

The plan is to get the ball in Zeke’s hands around 25 to 30 times, while we’re going to reintroduce Allen in the running game too. Our plan is to use a substantial amount of run-pass option plays, with Allen making a quick read and either running or looking to strike quickly to Thomas or Moore who’ll run a high number of crossing routes and slants.

Duke Johnson will see a number of snaps as the change of pace back. The intention will primarily be using him as a receiver, with a number of wheel and swing routes. We believe this should have some success as we intend to have a fair bit of traffic in the middle of the field with Thomas, Moore and Ertz running routes in the area which will make it difficult for the coverage linebackers to navigate and get to the sideline, or will require their attention to stop passes being completed in their area.

The passing game will be rather simple. Lockett will stretch the field as usual, while Moore, Ertz and Thomas will be used in the short passing game. While we respect the targets that Lancaster have, Allen has been one of the best short and intermediate passers in the league this year and with the strength of our weapons and the time that he should have from our OL and the option threat, he’ll be able to hit with regularity and keep the chains moving.

Defense:

With the departure of Danny Trevathan and introduction of Alexander Johnson, we feel we’ve taken our defence up another notch and have players playing at a pro bowl/all-pro level from top to bottom of our defense.

After mixing in zone concepts last week, we’re also going to return with our tried and tested man coverage scheme. The coverage assignments will be as follows:

Gilmore – Evans
Harris Jr – Beckham Jr
Fuller – Snead/Shepard
Hyde – Running Back
Johnson (with help from Clinton-Dix) – Kittle

With Savage playing as the single high safety.

We’re confident with the majority of our matchups, and while we believe that Johnson has the ability to hang with anyone, Kittle might be the best TE in the game so we know it won’t be easy. As a result, we plan to have Clinton Dix roam around at the intermediate level with a lean towards Kittle depending on the route he’s running. On certain plays Clinton-Dix and Hyde may swap assignments, in particular when Johnson (or Allen if he’s brought in) are used as blitzers.

In terms of the defensive line, we don’t play to do anything out of the ordinary. A heavy rotation to keep everyone rested and a focus on getting at Rivers are the two main things, as we know with the ballhawking ability of our secondary, the pass-rushing ability of our DL and Rivers’ propensity for turnovers when pressured, we can force some turnovers and 3 and outs to fit into our offensive game plan.

What's everyone vibing re: Kwon Alexander? Thursday game but also torn pec ahead of this matchup...

He came into the week healthy. Regardless of the injury on Thursday. He isn’t playing Thursday night in BDL. He is completely active in this one for me.
