The Official XFL Thread!

Official attendance is at 18,000+, 2nd week in a row the Roughnecks have pulled in that sort of crowd.

A combination of football after the Super Bowl along with the despair behind Bill O'Brien makes for a climate for the XFL to thrive. The excitement that MVPJ Walker is bringing is going to help this team stick in Houston - and the rest of the team is answering the bell that Walker is ringing.

This is really fun, just really fun.

Damn, look at the ToP. The 'Hawks have dominated that, they have more yards, and they've been a lot better on third down. But because of the turnovers they're trailing by two scores. Anyone who didn't watch is missing one of the most interesting games yet.

The 'necks are making key plays - the turnovers are huge, but they're also converting the XPs for the most part.

Both turnovers we're deep in 'Hawks territory, short scores are just demoralizing for a team.

Yeah, a lot of teams would have given up by now. St. Louis just keeps fighting back.

They may have shot themselves in the foot with the XP though. You've GOT to go for at least 2 there, maybe 3. You have more room to work with and it puts you in a much better spot. Instead they try for 1, fail, and are still down by 4.

So Houston, DC, and St. Louis look like playoff teams. Who takes the last slot in the west?

Well, there are only three eligible teams - the Dragons, Renegades, and Wildcats.

The Dragons and Renegades are both currently 1-1. The Wildcats are one game back from a playoff spot with their 0-2 record.

The Dragons and Renegades haven't played any of the same opponents. The Dragons have yet to face a divisional foe, while the Renegades are 1-0 against the West. That would LEAD me to believe that Dallas is coaching the fourth playoff team, as the rankings stand RIGHT NOW. The real question moving forward - and I believe this is your intended question - is who will pull away from the pack?

The Wildcats looked really good in the fourth quarter, and seem to have some offensive momentum. Their defense is opportunistic and seemed to have people in excellent position plenty of times this week against a Bob Stoops passing attack with a semi-competent trigger-man. Josh Johnson was definitely a step up from Kanoff, though it took a little while for him to find a rhythm. Nelson Spruce is possibly the best receiver in the XFL, and guys like Kermit Whitfield, Jordan Smallwood, Adonis Jennings, and Saeed Blacknall carry plenty of athletic upside - though all but Spruce had some trouble with drops today. Elijah Hood is a good RB, but he demonstrated some serious ball security issues and the LA offensive line seems to be the worst in the league at sustaining blocks. And it'll take multiple wins in a row to go with multiple Dallas losses in a row for them to overtake the Hell Raisers anytime soon. So we can rule out the Wildcats - at least for the first half of the season. They DO carry some intrigue moving forward.

The Dragons, despite being considered one of the worst teams in the XFL, are potentially owning a playoff spot. Look. They're generally effective running the football, with guys like Trey Williams, Kenneth Farrow, and Ja'Quan Gardner all making people miss while also playing a role in the passing game to this point. Austin Proehl looked amazing week 1, and while he had issues this past week, the Seattle offense as a whole had serious trouble sustaining drives. In fact, they were 2-for-10 on third down all game against the Vipers. Brandon Silvers completed 39% of his passing attempts. They had 82 net passing yards. The Dragons, as a team, finished the game with less than 200 yards of total offense. The Vipers put up 19 first downs against the Dragons and converted over half of their third downs. And yet, the Dragons managed to win. The Vipers managed to shoot themselves in the foot continuously, but it's still encouraging to Seattle fans that they were able to have such a rough outing but still came up in the clutch and managed to pull out the victory. Also, it's fair to say that the Dragons played MUCH better in their Week 1 loss to the Defenders, and I think this offense has some real upside. I like Brandon Silvers' ability that he showed to scramble around and keep his eyes downfield. Also, while his receivers certainly haven't helped him out for the most part, most of his throws have been on-target and he's made some Mahomes-type backyard football plays that his receivers just dropped or didn't try on because they didn't have the awareness level. Overall, the Dragons are a team with a good running game and a big-play - albeit inconsistent - passing game, but their defense is not impressive at all so far, which leads me to believe that they will have trouble keeping up with the rest of this division.

The Renegades have to be the favorite to get that second playoff spot at this point. Landry Jones, while inconsistent with turnovers, showed much better arm talent than his predecessor did last week. He really sold me on his ownership and personality, and it's fair to point out that he did appear hampered by his knee injury, and that definitely affected the interception where he was targeting Parham - you can tell with how he staggered a bit from the release - but he still managed to scramble a bit. He also has only three days of practice with these guys since mini-camp. With that in mind, I'd say it's really encouraging that Landry managed to be as effective as he was - 70% completion percentage, over 300 passing yards. Donald Parham has tons of upside as a receiving target, and, despite the dropped touchdown, really had a good game. He was consistently getting open, and he should continue to do so. He has good speed for a tight end to go with a 6'8" frame. Jeff Badet was banged up for a good chunk of the game, but he still managed to come back and be an impact player, and he should be good going forward. I think, if anything, it's encouraging that the passing game was as good as it was and guys like Jazz Ferguson haven't even really gotten involved yet. Then you have the RBs, who are both really outstanding players so far. Cameron Artis-Payne had a quiet Week 1 in the box score, but he had two 20+ yards runs (one of which was a touchdown scamper) get called back with penalties. In Week 2, he was dynamic against a tough Wildcat defense, with terrific balance, vision, and patience. He finished with 99 rushing yards and 2 rushing TDs at over 7 yards per carry, with 5 receptions for 32 yards, as well. And this guy has power. It always confused me how a star runningback for a National Championship team never really had a role in an NFL offense, but he's definitely showing off his ability in a league where most other backs are floundering a bit. Lance Dunbar has looked dynamic as a runner and receiver for two weeks in a row, and should continue to be huge for this offense as an outlet and change-of-pace guy.

Overall, it looks like it's going to be a Texas-owned West, but there's still 80% of the regular season that's yet to be played.
