Man... so many different rules out there that we hardly see used... Still don't think it applies to Clowney, but if Golden was even considered a consolation signing, his value may drop a bit as he'll now count against the comp pick calculation. It's probably not a significant drop, but there it is.

Is there any reason more teams don't use this rule?

This is the first year I remember a significant number of FAs not singing till after the draft.

It's not only Clowney and Ryan, they'd still some quality guys available

You can find some starters in that group and a lot of quality depth/rotational guys. It's definitely a different type of free agency

as someone who works in the misery that is corporate america...the NFL really is as corporate as it gets

Yeah, they won't be able to do a dang thing.  The reason these rules exist is to explain exactly what you can and can't do.  "Gaming the system" is usually smiled upon in contract law anyway.  You don't like it?  Change the rules next year, but deal with it.

They have changed the rules... the changed it from June 1st to the 2nd Tuesday after the draft 10 years ago in that CBA... and changed it again with this year's CBA to the Monday after the draft.

Trying to penalize teams for playing within the rules is ridiculous... and they'll have to wait until the next CBA sessions to try to change it... if they can get enough ownership support and agreement by the NFLPA.  Sorry dudes.

Why would anyone actually care. Owners will just get smart or should get smart for next year.

So here's another piece that changed with the new CBA... rookie options.

Under the terms of the new CBA, all 1st round picks will now be compensated at the average value of the top 10 paid players at that position.  Prior to this year, only top 10 picks were valued at this premium, while picks 11-32 were valued at the average between the 3rd and 25th top paid players at the position.  (I hope that made sense)

Also, prior to the new CBA, these 5th year options were guaranteed for injury only prior to the start of that 5th season.  Under the new agreement, the option is now fully guaranteed at the time of the team triggering the option year.

PFT wrote their article on Humphries using the language on the old CBA.... so I wonder if maybe this is one of those things that doesn't go into effect until later?  I don't know, but it's a pretty big deal for us:

- In Adoree's case, his 5th year option would go from 10M to about 14M (using last year's values, so these numbers are probably a little higher this year).

- In Davis' case,  although still an unlikely scenario, if we were to trigger his option under the previous CBA, we could still cut him without penalty prior to the 2021 season (as long as he didn't suffer some long term injury).  It would be about 15M so very unlikely we'd do it... but it could protect you if he has a breakout year... with minimal risk (at least compared to Conklin) since Davis has not been injured.  Under the new terms, there's no way they're triggering that 15M option if it's fully guaranteed.

If they would take away a 3rd round comp pick for Conklin, I'd definitely care.

That's what I mean the ones that would be upset to cause them to change it because to get with the program and take advantage of it. Not our fault they are incompetent. If they take away our 3rd for Conklin we have every right to be upset. Play by rules and get penalized
