The production Kerrigan gives you as a 3rd DE getting occasional pass-rush snaps, coming off a 5 sack season, playing a new position, at age 32?

3rd DE is a meaningful position, and Kerrigan would be a great option for the spot. But at that salary number and at his age? I think we need to err on the side of cashing him out “too soon” instead of waiting until it’s too late to get anything for him. He could go play for a contending team, we could get an extra pick to add a WR or TE or CB or OLB who would have a real shot at developing into a starter.

Or he could be the Strahan for the Giants with Tuck and Osi. Drop his cap hit and let this guy go out as a redskin. No he isn’t a HOF player because we’ve had terrible defenses. But he is a Redskin!!! In a time that it’s really rare for players to stick with one team I’ll take that card wit Ryan over a pick. This is about precedent. He is a Redskin. If we ever win before he hangs it up then he gets a shot at this window. If not then he’s our all time sack leader this season and he has earned whatever graces to be here for this chance. We have talent a respectable staff and I believe a FO that can make the proper decisions for a roster. I actually believe in Haskins. So that means we have a 3 to 4 year window before he gets expensive if he turns out.if he doesn’t he doesn’t. But Kerrigan has earned the chance to maybe be apart of a run. As has Trent. I keep them both

I think you’ll get your wish. It sounds like Snyder feels the way you (and many many others) do, and I think that will pretty much determine how it plays out.

And I’m really not going to be mad about it. I like the guy. He’ll probably be better than anyone else we’d employ in that 3rd DE role, so the team will be better next year.

I don’t think think it’s exactly a close comp to Strahan though, for a couple reasons. First, the Giants were a championship contender in the year where they deployed all three of those guys. That’s really not where we are. And second, they were able to get Strahan on the field a lot because they kicked Tuck inside to DT a lot, letting them play all three at once. We’re not going to do that with Sweat — so any time Kerrigan is on the field, those are going to be reps he’s taking from our two young potential stars at DE.

The way I see it is if the Redskins want to keep Kerrigan, that’s fine. If they want Kerrigan to retire as a Redskin and he wants to retire as a Redskin, we’re going to have to reduce that cap hit or else you’ll be cut bc I would not paying $11 million for that trash he put on the field last year.

The Redskins are not a retirement program for football players, it’s a professional football team trying to build a consistent winner and if Kerrigan isn’t going to have effort in run defense or be as consistent of a pass rusher as he was when he was 30 and younger, then he needs to go.

Also, if I’m Kerrigan, I’m worried more about getting to a team that isn’t rebuilding and has a chance to go to the playoffs or even will be a super bowl contender next year and the next year after. I know I’m in the last few years of my career. I would want to go out as a winner rather then remaining with a franchise who hasn’t figured out how to be a consistent winner since 1994.

But hey, I’m just a dude posting with some other skins fans in a football forum, what do I know? Haha 🤣

Exactly where I’m at.

We don’t have to be a retirement program. But we should reduce his deal and I think he would understand that as well. But even if Ryan doesn’t get a title I think he would love to mentor guys like Chase and Montez. You also can’t tell me he can’t do the math of him coming off the bench fresh with the focus elsewhere doesn’t make him wonder what he could still show. I think there’s plenty of gas in that tank.

His most productive years as a pass rusher were 2016, 2017, and 2018.  So it isn't like his sack numbers have been in decline.

I guess it depends what he wants.  I sure would be interested in seeing him in a 4-3 and with the first good defensive coordinator he has had in his entire career.

But you could play all three together with him at outside LB. Ryan is comfortable standing up and that means 3 rush guys on the field together. I think there is a lot they can do with the rotation at DT and edge. And I get the Giants we’re going on runs with those 3. But it was mainly because that defense and mainly the leadership of strahan more then his production. The Giants were 6 seeds in the playoffs it’s not like we’re talking about powerhouse teams. They got hot. I don’t think you get better letting a consonant pro and leader go. The whole reason to take Chase is to have constant pressure on the QB. Ryan has a lot of knowledge to offer. I think that is more important to the guys we’re investing in then filling that spot with a lesser player

I definitely think Kerrigan would benefit in a Chris Long type role as you said - I think it was you - said before.

In 2017 & 18 Chris Long made a little under and a little over $3 million each year.  In 2016, while he played for the Patriots, Chris Long made $3 million again.

If it was me and my $/football team - and lord knows I’m not Dan Snyder - I’d have to seriously restructure Kerrigan’s contract if we draft Chase Young.

I need a @Thaiphoon ruling or someone who knows more than me about contracts but I think you can turn Kerrigan’s $11 million base salary into a signing bonus and then add 2 more years onto his deal.

So, basically you’d spread that $11 million over 3 years and then turn his base salary into like $3 or 4 million.

So, he’d go from being $11 million on this year cap to $6.7 million this year and the next two years. Honestly, that’s still a little too high for my taste with a #3 DE/3rd down pass rush specialist but if Dan wants to do that with his $ bc Kerrigan is a nice guy and loves the Redskins, so be it.

Yes, but let’s also realize that those years he was 28, 29 and 30. Not 31 - where he battled two injures that cost him games & eventually put him on IR - and now going to be 32 before this season starts.

Are you suggesting playing Kerrigan at SLB? I think that would be an awful mistake in pass coverage.

Kerrigan has never been the player the Redskins used in pass coverage much as a 3-4 OLB bc he’s not even average in coverage. They used every other 3-4 OLB they had over Kerrigan in coverage whether that was Orakpo, Trent Murphy, Preston Smith or Montez Sweat.

If the Redskins were to draft Chase Young and then Kerrigan becomes a back up and they played all 3 on the field together, the best thing would be to play Kerrigan at 3 or 5 technique in the Nickel like we used to do with him years ago.

No I’m not putting him in coverage. I’m talking about sub packages passing downs and yes maybe as a stunt drop him on a zone out but it was mentioned as a way to have Chase Montez and Ryan on the field together. It wasn’t to be a starter. I want him as a sub and yes for DelRio to be creative and mix things up.

All those names and none of them half half the INT’s as Kerrigan. He has dropped more in coverage then all those players

Yes. You can do that. But remember, you can't turn it all. So you do $1m salary per year and then amortize $8m over the three years.

He'll get ALL of the $11m now, but he will still be on our books for 3 years.

We have to be careful, because we can't do this too many times for too many players. That's how you get into cap hell

Thanks and I knew he’d be on our books for a few more years after if we did that.
