I don’t think Jon Allen was being considered going #1 overall but top 5 yes. I do know this, he’s better then who the 49ers took that year which was Solomon Thomas. You want to talk about a bust, look at that guy! Jon Allen has been a very good player. He’s not elite, but he’s been very good and if he’s gone there’s a major hole on our DL and while Ioannidis is a better pass rusher, Allen is a better run defender and better all around player. They’re not as good all around. What Allen & Payne do goes unnoticed because most of their best work is done on run downs and on the interior. That stuff doesn’t show up on the stat sheet but is key to us having a top 5 defense. Do I have to remind you that barely Ioannidis played this year and w/o him we did have a top 5 D? That’s not taking anything away from Ioannidis and his ability as an interior pass rusher but it’s just giving more credit to Allen & Payne for what they do.
