Tampa Bay, for example, played with formations that had four LBs on the field on a little over 70% of their snaps. Their four LB spots averaged 1062.75 snaps per position (4251 total snaps). Their 3 DLs spots averaged 843.8 per position (2531 total snaps). Teams don't take their pass rushers off the field, and they don't take their two off ball LBs off the field. The player they take off the field when their base is 3-4 to go into nickel is one of the linemen, and then you shade an edge into a 3 point stance to put a third guy on the line. Or they pull both EDGE into 3 point stances if they want a 4-2-5 defense. So since you're convinced that you don't pay players that aren't used outside of base, why do we need to pay the "Big Hosses" that won't be used in Nickel?
