Gobert and Embiid are pretty comparable by all measures. I think it will go to Embiid considering he will have played 10+ more games than Gobert.

Dipo should be on the all Defensive team. Dude is fire.

Five keys to the squad’s success:

Victor Oladipo, the Most Improved Player (MIP) in the NBA.

It would be a disservice to not discuss All-Star Oladipo first. He should be a near unanimous choice for MIP and his game has shifted in an unexpected way as the season has progressed. His 3PT% has dropped considerably since November, but his counting stats remain virtually identical otherwise: 23 PTS/5 REBS/4 AST on 47 FG% and 80 FT%, to his current 23/5/4 on 47/81 slash line. He’s averaging career highs in nearly every significant offensive statistic, both traditional and advanced: Points, FG%, 3PT%, True Shooting%, Assists, Offensive Rating (ORtg), Offensive Win Shares (OWS), and Offensive Box Plus/Minus (OBPM). He ranks 8th in the NBA in ESPN’s Real Plus-Minus with 5.21, and 7th in RPM Wins with 12.42 (just behind four-time MVP LeBron James). There have been many games where he’s carried the offense, with 11 games of 30+ PTS. He is the unquestioned go-to player for this team.

However, the most remarkable thing about Dipo’s season, for me at least, hasn’t been his offense. What makes him so special as a newly minted “star player” is that he’s so well-rounded, as his defense has gone from average to exceptional. Victor is the NBA’s leader in Steals Per Game (STL), averaging a career high 2.2 to go along with 0.7 BLK. If you dribble in front of him for more than a couple seconds, you’re probably going to get stripped. He has long arms, he’s quick, strong, agile and gambles at the right times. When he gets beat off the dribble, which doesn’t happen often anymore, he’s athletic enough to recover in time to contest the shot (Miles Turner being a major deterrent also helps). Victor plays extremely hard, up there with Giannis Antetokounmpko and Draymond Green for tops in the league when it comes to never giving up on plays. He’s also a terrific help defender at the rim, routinely blocking bigger players from the weakside (reminiscent of Dwyane Wade).

Here are some interesting hustle stats (qualifiers for all of the following stats: min. 40 games played, 15 minutes per game): Dipo leads the NBA in Contested 3PT Shots per game (4.9), is 1st among Shooting Guards in overall Contest Shots per game (8.9), 4th in the league in Deflections per game (3.6) and 11th in Loose Balls Recovered per game (1.5).

Victor has a legitimate chance to make an All-Defensive team spot this season. The Pacers are 0-6 in games he hasn’t played. Their average margin of defeat in those games: -12.2 points. Basically, they’re a 50+ win pace team with him and likely a tanking team without him. That’s a huge discrepancy, an impact few players in the league can match.

Watching  my Boston team vs Utah, I can't help think that Rudy Gobert should be considered the best defensive player in the league every year he is healthy IMO. He just changes soo many shots that don't show in stats. players like Dray Green may be more versatile, but a great defensive center anchors a team so much more than any other position can.
