For the sake of pronoun agreement, let's say the collective "we" are dating Josh: he's the on-again off-again significant other that some have who keeps self-destructing and hurting himself, not cheating or being physically abusive etc. After a while, we learn to live our lives as if this person may never get well, but we still love this person and are happy to see him happy. We see potential in him if he'll only learn to love himself. We saw him thrive before, and it was special. He may or may not ever heal, but we know there is an amazing person in there.
