Madmike90
Hopefully Poles strategy goes a little something like this... 1. Cut/trade anyone who won't help Fields develop and has a cap number we don't want to carry in 2023 as much as 2022. 2. Do everything possible to get guys in FA/draft to help Fields development in 2022. 3. In 2023 use the massive cap space you have created with these moves plus the fact if Fields does develop he is instantly one of the better QBs in the NFC to attract quality FAs and grow the offence around Fields. 4. Hope Flus can create the low rent defence with 3 or 4 stars like he did in Indy while taking later round picks and developing them into role players on defence. 5. Be built to be truly competitive in 2023 with a good defence with a few stars and a tailor made offence for a quality QB who has protection & some real weapons.
dll2000
It was reported that they reviewed last two years of player tape. Covid opt out and then Goldman unexcused skipped most of 2021 offseason. Then didn't show out much in play. None of that is a secret to others. That isn't much to recommend him to market. He won't fetch much. Time to shop him was this time in offseason 2021. Someone would have gambled on good Goldman. But Nagy/Pace were hoping for a big job saving year in 2021.

Tanking 2022 also lets you move on from Fields if he doesn't develop.

Looking at his contract it looks like any team trading for Goldman gets 2 years and $17M (8.7 and 8.3) in non-guaranteed salary for his age 28 and 29 seasons. That’s not a huge hit for a guy who’s probably a top 5 3-4 NT when he’s on. Could definitely see a team with space who wants to take a less risky swing on upside than that which comes with high guarantees at the top of the FA market trading a conditional 2023 pick for a flyer on him. Probably wouldn’t be much - a conditional 7 that could be a 6, or a 6 that could be a 5. Anything would be better than nothing.

No one is saying tank...if we tank then FAs don't want to come here...we need to play tough and win the games we should and not get blown out in the games we should lose...trading Mack and cutting guys like Cohen & Trevathan doesn't mean you are setting up to tank...just means you are setting up not to try and add pieces to make a real run at the playoffs...if we finish 7-10...8-9...9-8 with Fields looking better then that is a solid point to move off of...this isn't a complete rebuild...just need to direct some of that cap in the right direction moving forward. Ironically the perfect team for him would be the Chargers given how bad they were against the run last season... To get true value for Goldman we should be looking for a player in a similar situation around the NFL...talented but in need of a fresh start.
