72 my man,  trust me a statue like Marino ain't making it in todays NFL.

You really don't see the difference in the defenses,  really?

👌

Yes, do you? Marino played in an Era where DB could literally mug you in coverage. WR's were actually scared to run crossing routes where the Ronnie Lotts of the world were waiting. Where DE/LB like Reggie White, LT, Bruce Smith could demolish QB's without getting a flag.

On a team for almost the entirety of his career without a 1,000 yd rusher (1), despite playing in a Rush Heavy Era. Marino's quick release and arm strength would absolutely translate into today's Era. It's not even in question.

With the ticky tack rules DB are held to, the spread offenses and as you put Athletes as well on offense there is Zero reason , I mean zero reason think think Marino wouldn't thrive in today's NFL as well.

Marino has a career comp % at 59.9,  so in his day he couldn't complete 60% with Clayton. Duper and Nat Moore.  You really think vs far superior athletes playing defense he will improve on that.  Did you watch the game last night,  look at how many times those QB's had to move,  ya can't just stand there anymore those days are long gone.  Marino couldn't run at all, talking at all,  That won't work in today NFL, come on get real.

For the love of God please stop. The GOAT of all QB is a GD statue. The same exact QB who won last years SB as a GD statue.  The same QB with less rushing yds in his 22 year career then Lamar Jackson's 2019 season!!!!

QB's don't have to be mobile. They have to be able to move within the pocket and make NFL throws. Marino had that ability in spades.

You keep harping on the defenders having more speed. Why aren't you talking about the differences with the modern day WR, TE, RB's as his possible weapons well? They aren't bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic too?

You don't think Marino could of  utilized properly a Travis Kelce, Tyrek Hill, Keenan Allen, Alvin Kamara, CMC? GTFOH.

There are no current WR faster than Bob Hayes,  Cliff Branch so cool that. And Marino had Mark Duper a 9.4 sprinter.

Tom Brady is on a totally different level than Dan Marino,  this is news to you,  really?  Like I said all Marino actually did was throw a TON of passes,  not a great comp% or passer rating because he just didn't complete enough.  Look at his TD/INT ratio, ouch!!!

Sorry guy, if ya dig a fantasy then ya have one if you think Marino is anything special today.

I think close to the upper limit of possible is 68 passing TDs. That would be 4 a game (average ~12 drives a game so a third end in a passing TD is pretty all time great). More than that and your defense must be pretty atrocious to be passing so much. 3 a game is 51 (48 in a 16 game season) and obivious "could" be broken given Manning's Broncos year, but that isn't a typical all time great year or whatever. So I'd put 51 down as the lower limit of a "all time great" 2021 onwards year and 68 as upper limit. I think 60 is possible, but would be perfect storm-y with a team gunning for it and passing more than they should for the chance of history.

yeah.. teams were allowed to play defense when Marino played...

He would have a bazillion  yards and touchdowns in todays NFL.

Not true. He was to inaccurate and only today's Supreme athletes play defense.  Just ask the 72 yr old Teenager. 🍺

Marino and sacks.  Hold record...  19 consecutive games without getting sacked on 759 pass attempts. Played in the LT era.

I forgot who beat the Bears 1986 team!!!!! DM killed them with his quick release and destroyed a defense which many considered the best of all time.

DM release time  8/9 frames compared to average QB of 15 frame!!! Only way to measure by pic frame.

I'm pretty sure DM would have little problems getting the ball out in today's NFL.

Just remember if you compare him to today's NFL.. you would have to say he would trained like today's NFL and had all the advance technologies to improve his game. And lets not forget the rules now in place.

It's a passing league where one of the most gifted passers in NFL history,  would of had no problems adapting. None!

Marino had a peak of about 5 years (it was a hell of a peak)

Guys like Manning sustained their greatness.

Marino could not adapt to 1988 onward, why should we think any other year would be any different?

He'd be great for 5 years in today's era and then not so much.

Here are comparative ranks in passer rating year by year.

  • Marino is mostly all over the place in that 6 to 13 range.
    • 3,1,5,2,4,10,11,8,7,7,-,3,8,6,13,18 (6 top 5s in 15 years, only 1 in the last 11)
  • Manning was top 5 almost always. (11 in 16 years, consistent throughout)
    • 4,6,8,5,2,1,1,1,4,5,6,10,-,2,2,4,34

I think I'd rather have a Steve Young without the USFL then Tampa and then sitting behind Montana instead of Dan Marino.

Young was a 102.1 rated passer as a part timer for 4 years.

  • One example was his 120.1 rating in 1987 (3+ games). (Montana was around 101 in his 9 real games)
    • Rice had 22 TDs in 12 games that year.
      • Montana had 14 of those in 351 throws (17 TD pace).
      • Young had 8 of them in 69 throws. (49 TD pace)

He was a 102.1 rated passer as a starter for 8 years.

  • He led the league in passer rating 6 times in those 8 years.
    • He was T-5th one year and 3rd in the other
  • He led the league in yards per attempt 5 times
  • He led the league in completion % 5 times.
  • In those 8 years there was not a year when he did not lead the league in multiple categories.
  • He also ran for 25 yards a game, scored 33 rushing TDs and averaged 5.8 a carry.

You can't just point to the 49ers and just say Young benefited from the system as some sort of nullification..

Young was significantly higher than Montana in just about every metrics category

It does not make him better than Montana (he wasn't when you factor in playoffs) but it also shows he was in no way just a system guy.

^^ Wasn't arguing Marino as the greatest ever, better then Manning, Young, Montana and so on Skippy. But the absurd notion Marino would be some kind of lost bum in today's NFL because of the athletes on Defense being to much for him to handle.

As if Marino himself wouldn't of been aided by the advancements in nutrition, sports medicine, weight training, technology (tablets/instant feedback) growing up and playing in todays version of HS/College football while entering the NFL.

There is Zero reason even with all of the statistics you provided above to think in "This" rediculously pass wacky, new ruled NFL that caters everything to the offense and especially the QB position that Dan Marino wouldn't thrive as well. Zero!

Yeah, clearly Marino was as good as anyone for those 5 years and he was still a good QB the rest of the time.

When he did what he did in that 83-87 range, no one else was doing it, so he'd probably be like that now as well.

Not sustaining it for 15 years is common, even among the great players.

Guys like Manning and Brady are very rare, but not the only great ones.
