Just how is Kirk Cousins perceived among fans?

To me he seems a certain top-16 starting QB, ie in the top half. In that 12-16 range. Yet I detect a prevailing sense of frustration towards him from Vikings fans and the general football cognoscenti - almost as though they expect him to be... better? Like a top 10 guy? Or does it come down to his contract?

Let's straighten this out - just how good do you think Kirk Cousins is? A Romo-type? Better? Worse? Would you want him on your team if you needed a QB?

He's in that 10-15 range, an above average starter, but not a true franchise QB by any means. Plays up/down to the level of his supporting cast. Seems to struggle in clutch situations, and suffers brain farts that you wouldn't expect to see from a £30 million QB. You get the impression that his coaches and teammates don't really like him. However will always put up consistently very good stats and leave you wondering whether the grass is really greener on the other side or not. Could you win a Super Bowl with him? Yes, but the situation would need to be perfect. He won't carry you there on his own back.

He gets a lot of unnecessary hate.

I see him as kind of a quasi-Stafford that while flawed can win a Super Bowl on the right team; hard to win in the toxic cesspool that is Washington and a team as cursed as Minnesota.

He’s basically in that same tier as Matthew Stafford, top 10 most of the time. Stafford just won a super bowl, certainly think Cousins could too in the right situation. That’s generally been the concern though with Cousins. He’s paid so well but generally needs everything to go right. He runs the play as scripted and hasn’t been given the authority (or maybe it’s a lack of desire) to really change things at the LOS. Some have said he just wants to run the play as called, it’s the off script stuff that seems to get Cousins is trouble. He is durable, very accurate, has a good arm, generally doesn’t get hit a lot, rarely makes bad decisions; but I think it’s some of the intangibles that are lacking; but you can’t be lacking in those areas if you’re going to be a significant cap hit as he is.

Also as far as I can see Cousins has never missed a game which is a huge credit to him. QB durability is a very underrated quality.

And getting rid of the ball. Not like MN has been known for having good OL the last five years

Imo Cousins dont have that "it" factor especially when the spotlight shines the brightest whether it be in a prime time game or a playoff game that he just dont deliver. Any time Keenum can take the Vikings team with the defense they had with the running game and receiving weapons they had to the NFCCG in one season but all Cousins can do is at best win one playoff game his entire time there that speaks volumes about him.

Keenum had a top 5 defense. Cousins had a bottom 5 defense for two years straight now. Don’t agree with this take. Stafford didn’t have the it factor before this past year either. It’s all about situation and the Vikes situation has been toxic the past two years with Zimmer and Spielman not talking. MN has had talent on offense but the defense consistently gave up big plays in the worst possible moment. Injuries and lack of talent did the defense in.

Stafford had lost like 83% 90% of his games against winning teams up until this year. The team around you matters a great deal in deciding if you have "it".

Until he wins awards or multiple postseason games, he'll have a large number of doubters.

Good QB that fluctuates in that 6-16 range like a lot of other guys.

Never understood why he gets trashed the way he does.

Will not be easily replaced if Minny cuts ties. Washington is still looking.

If O'Connell can come close to replicating what McVay is doing in LA, Cousins could be a dark-horse MVP candidate. The guy can put up crazy numbers. But I do agree he is lacking that "it" factor.

Offensively, I don’t think MN will have issues. Top receiving duo, good TEs, young up and coming OL, it all comes back to the defense. If the defense was even average last year, the Vikes are a playoff team.
