The claim wouldn’t have been any less believable than a character cop. Perhaps his role playing is messing with me but I trust him. MWil kind of seems like he’s game solving too but I’m a little less trusting of him atm. I personally don't see Wolf making a fake red letter, knowing he was a goner, to then have a major link between a scum teammate in Malf. I personally could see a N1 Malf invest to earn a "clear", then a N2 invest on Orca, where he learned who he was, and figured he could fake a "red letter" on Orca to get him mislynched and sacrifice himself.
