Based on our history.....

We are the team that continued to pay the corpses of Chad Clifton and Bryan Bulaga.

There is precedent in GB for paying and playing an aged tackle, even an injury prone aged tackle.

If it is one thing we know how to do, it is how to keep those guys healthy enough to play on gamedays.

Again, it depends on how this season goes AND whether or not Bakh wants to stay here for his entire career.

We let Bulaga go and many folks on message boards were pissed. I can't remember a time we gave and offensive lineman 30+ a big contract.

11 OT's have average salaries (cap hits) ≥$18/year.  19 are ≥$15/year.  So $21 isn't crazy.  But yeah, those include signing bonus dollars.

I had suggested that rather than talking about the $19 sunk-cost from signing bonus, the Packers would really only consider the $21/1 that Bak would actual cost next year.

He costs $21M in salary in addition to the $19M.  So saying he only costs $21M is a touch misleading as it leaves out the other $19M.

His potential cost at current salary/ contract in cap hit terms is another $21M

snippets from todays practice

  • Today is the last day of open training camp practice and so it is the last day of a scheduled training camp update. There might still be some closed practices with enough information from beat reporters to make into a thread and I'll try to do that but I can't guarantee that will happen live like these scheduled ones have. It's been fun. Thanks for tuning in.

  • It's hot af today in Green Bay and not just the piss but the outdoor temps too.

Injuries: CB Eric Stokes (PUP-Knee/Foot), TE Tyler Davis (ACL)

Not Practicing / Limited: RB Lew Nichols (Shoulder), RB Tyler Goodson (Shoulder), OL Luke Tenuta (Ankle), ILB De'Vondre Campbell (Ankle), Bo Melton (Hamstring), S Tarvarius Moore (Knee), OL David Bakhtiari (Rest), FB Henry Pearson, WR Dontayvion Wicks, DT Jason Lewan (Back)

Offense:

  • Love to Reed deep for a td on first play of 7x7s. Looked like Nixon fell down. Didn’t see the route to see what happened. 60 yard td.

  • Clifford and DuBose not on the same page on a comeback route. Valentine in coverage.

  • McGough: complete to Chrest on shallow crosser.

  • Love: reed in flat. Nixon right there.

  • Clifford: Complete to Heath over middle. Ballentine in coverage.

  • McGough: looked for Chrest down left sideline. Good coverage by Hamilton.

  • Love: complete to Doubs on out route along sidelines. Alexander in coverage. Nice pass and catch.

  • Clifford: Heath quick slant v. Valentine.

  • McGough: Bonds has step on SJC. Over throw.

  • Starters today! Walker - Jenkins - Myers - JRJ - Tom | Love Jones | Deguara - Musgrave | Heath - Watson

  • Jordan Love connects with Jayden Reed on another crosser. Douglas in coverage. Jayden Reed off to another great start today. It’s hard to tell who to be more excited for - Musgrave or Reed. Both look beyond legit in camp.

  • 2 decent gains by Jones in run game.

  • Nice block by Tucker Kraft on LVN on a run inside.

  • Love back at QB in team drills: Dillon run up middle for decent gain. Nice take to Jones originally.

  • Physical run up the middle by Dillon.

  • Pitch to Dillon. Nice block by Deguara and cut back by Dillon.

  • And Deguara now with a fantastic block on Van Ness in pass pro. Love Looks for Doubs, Ballentine gets into position to contest catch on sidelines.

  • Clifford at QB: Swing pass to Taylor. Kraft positioned well as lead blocker.

  • False start Telfort and he’s out. Caleb Jones goes in.

  • Nice running lane right for Taylor.

  • JaDakis Bonds schools Hooper and Clifford hits him for a big gain.

  • Another nice blitz pick up. Gary ran a stunt as well. Complete to Watson on out route. He loves that route and throw.

  • Love with a WOW throw over the middle up the seam to Kraft on a post. That looked like a No look pass over the middle that held the linebackers. Soft spot in zone between Ballentine and S. Complete for big gain. That was my favorite Love play of camp. Legit mouth drop.

  • Love scrambles. Nowhere to go with ball.

  • Good coverage. Finds Doubs in flat.

  • Starting offense at own 30. Run up middle by Jones.

  • Play-action. Fantastic throw from Love to Watson on a deep crosser. Big pickup. Possible sack from Van Ness on stunt.

  • Complete to Jones with some YAC

  • Run left by Dillon.

  • Love threw a beautiful back of the end zone td to Musgrave but Luke didn’t tap his feet and lost track of where he was. That should have been 7. Rookie mistake from 88 as he came down out of bounds. Rudy Ford in coverage.

  • Clifford at QB at own 30: Pitch to Wilson right. Gets around corner but defense limits run.

  • Run up middle by Wilson for a few.

  • Taylor outside for minimal gain.

  • Finds Kraft who was in soft spot underneath deeper routes

  • Clifford finds Deguara on an out for a nice pickup. Two back to back nice practices for Josiah.

  • Complete to McCrary. Nowhere to really go. Nice rep by Mosby v. Nijman.

  • Play-action pass complete to Kraft in flat

  • Nice blitz pickup by OL. Complete to Watts over middle.

  • Ball on the opposing 20. 17 seconds left. No timeouts. Tied 0-0. Love and the first team up first.

  • And Love fires a touchdown in the back of the end zone to Musgrave. Another massive wow throw. Great play by 88 who slid, caught it and stayed in bounds. Whew. Good protection. Really nice pass to a tight window over LB but still giving Musgrave a chance in back of end zone to get both feet in. Rookie TE beat Jonathan Owens on a seam route.

  • Second offense at opponent 20 with 17 seconds:

  • Complete to DuBose on sidelines. 7 yards. But penalty. Offense now at 25.

  • Nowhere to go. Incomplete to DuBose in back left corner. Good coverage and overthrown.

  • Second offense on own 30. Down 7 with 1:45 left.

  • Immediate pressure by Wooden. Complete to Chrest but Valentine right there. 4 yard gain. Clock ticks.

  • Throw away.

  • Complete to Chrest for the first down. Out of bounds.

  • JaDakis Bonds with a phenomenal adjustment and catch from Clifford for about 30ish. Fantastic catch. 8 had to navigate some DBs but put it where bonds could catch it.

  • Timeout offense. 1st and 10. Ball on opposing 24. 1:07 left. No timeouts.

  • Checkdown to Wilson for 3. Clock ticks.

  • Throw away. 3rd and 7. 0:45 left.

  • Incomplete to Bonds along sideline. Big 4th down coming up.

  • DuBose with a double move from the seam and he beats Gaines. Clifford hits him clean for the touchdown. Awesome by 86. Offense going for 2. Game on the line.

  • Clifford to Watts for 2 on the rollout and the offense wins on the very last play of training camp.

Defense:

  • Lukas Van Ness warming up with the DL, not the edge rushers today. Could just be cross training, or could be a way to maximize talent on the field with the return of Gary and the play of Enagbare.

  • Gary just threw Tom in one-on-ones. Gary beat him with a speed move outside. Just ran past him. Tom ended on the ground. Gary stood where the QB would have been, pounding his chest.

  • Brenton Cox just hit a sick spin move to end OL-DL

  • Starters: Clark - Slaton - Wyatt | Smith - Walker - Gary | Jaire - Nixon - Douglas | Ford - Savage

  • LVN follows it up with a really nice pressure off left side. Sounds like it might have been against Musgrave. Forces a high throw from Love to Toure incomplete.

  • And Enagbare continues to show up big with an immediate and explosive tfl in the backfield.

  • Devonte Wyatt just left practice with a Packers staff member. Looks like a heat issue.

  • Good pass breakup by Ballentine on an out to Doubs

  • Wooden stuffs a run by McCrary.

  • McDuffie on a blitz, picked up well by Runyan. Love incomplete to Doubs down right sideline. Rasul all over it.

  • Really feels like Ballentine and Gaines are in mix for roster spots. Since coming back to practice both have gotten a lot of looks the last 2 days.

  • With Devonte Wyatt out it’s Colby Wooden in his place in team drills. And it’s injury day today. Savage and Doubs awkwardly tangle up. Doubs looks ok but Savage is very gingerly going to the sideline.

  • Nixon would be sack in a blitz

  • Run by Dillon. McDuffie there to limit run. Been impressed with his run defense. Van Ness beats Musgrave for a run stop.

  • Run right by Jones. Nice job by Hollins/Brooks to bottle things up. Forces Jones back to Van Ness

  • Screen to Deguara. McDuffie all over it.

  • With the injuries at safety today (Savage, AJJ) it looks like Tyrell Ford has moved back to safety. He had been with the cbs.

  • Clifford pass to Watts nearly picked by Kiondre Thomas.

  • Pocket collapses. Looked like Ford was at it again.

  • Starters on own 30. Down 7 with 1:45 left.

  • Really nice pass rush by Brooks. Possible sack but complete to Dillon for a checkdown for about 8. Clock ticks.

  • Nice pass rush by Enagbare v. Tom. Throw away.

  • Draw to Dillon for 5ish yards and a 1st.

  • Pressure by Hollins. Throw away Love. Bought a ton of time and kept his eyes downfield but nobody there.

  • Tight throw to Doubs, Douglas jumps it and rips it away for INT. Jordan Love tried to squeeze in a 10 yard stop route to Romeo Doubs.

Media:

Interviews:

LaFleur Presser:

  • LaFleur said he let the players know ahead of time they needed to hydrate for the practice Wednesday. He said they would go the normal two hours and that it will prepare the team for tough circumstances they can't control.

  • "I didn't think it was good enough," LaFleur says of the No. 1 offense yesterday. He said there were too many busted plays and pre-snap penalties.

  • LaFleur said that it's hard to get rookie RB Emmanuel Wilson challenging opportunities to pass block because they need to come against the blitz and he must choose who to pick up. Said they're trying to give him as many looks in games but can't dictate what the defense will do.

we can re-sign Nijman, what is your price point?   GB also might not want to invest into him vs a higher rated prospect.

I am not sure Jones is much more than a project at this point, so looking to upgrade that seems pertinent

what other position would you advocate for looking into?

I get your points. I’m just a fan of Yosh and the other 3 show some real promise. Feel good about all 4 of them.

Edge:  unlikely with Gary, LVN, Enagbare

CB: possible, but Jaire, Douglas, Stokes, Valentine makes that pretty set

Things you never hear from NFL GMs - "aw, we have PLENTY of good edge/CBs, no need for more" (OTs also fall into this category; so should QBs but high-end starters tend to be a bit pr*ckly so the investments aren't made)

As of right now, GB should be able to go with BPA.

Agreed.

QB:  only if Love busts hard

RB/WR/TE:  don't see GB using a 1st

IOL:  again, don't see it

DL:  certainly possible

Edge:  unlikely with Gary, LVN, Enagbare

ILB: don't see it with Walker and campbell

Safety:  possible if an elite is there

CB: possible, but Jaire, Douglas, Stokes, Valentine makes that pretty set

Two positions I can never have enough depth are EDGE and CB. Seldom get through a season with any position group not missing games but I need at least 5 really dependable CBs and 6 EDGE.

I am also aware my wishes are likely unreasonable, and we may not keep 6 EDGE rushers.
