How much does the potential of having to wait another 4 weeks to get a staff together and start the scouting process hurt Shurmur’s chances?

It certainly could hurt some, but the Falcons waited for Quinn, and it worked for them pretty well.  If he's the right coach, the team should be willing to wait, as it's about setting it up for the long term.

Not immensely surprising that he would target outside the organization...although I don't see any clear connection between him and Dorsey, outside of Dorsey playing for Cleveland and Shurmur being HC there (2 years later).

Depending on how close Ron Rivera and Pat Shurmur are after coaching together for a few years in Philly, maybe Rivera is trying to help him.

I mean I doubt it, but really the only connection I have found.

Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur interviewed Friday for the vacant Chicago head coaching job. Shurmur will interview with the New York Giants on Saturday, his fourth and final interview of the week for a head position. He interviewed Thursday with Arizona and Detroit.

Vikings defensive coordinator George Edwards interviewed Thursday with the Bears, his only interview of the week.

NFL rules allow Shurmur and Edwards to interview this week but not next week in advance of Minnesota’s Jan. 14 playoff opener.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Patriots are bracing for defensive coordinator Matt Patricia to leave, most likely to become the next coach of the Detroit Lions.”

Everything I heard for a while was pointing that way, so not surprised.

Has there been many successful head coaches that were patriots assistants recently?

Seven of Belichick's assistant coaches have become NFL head coaches:

Romeo Crennel, Cleveland Browns (2005–2008), Kansas City Chiefs (2011–2012)
Al Groh, New York Jets (2000)
Josh McDaniels, Denver Broncos (2009–2010)
Eric Mangini, New York Jets (2006–2008), Cleveland Browns (2009–2010)
Nick Saban, Miami Dolphins (2005–2006)
Jim Schwartz, Detroit Lions (2009–2013)
Bill O'Brien, Houston Texans (2014–present)

The New York Giants interviewed Vikings offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur on Saturday for their vacant head coaching job. Shurmur met with co-owner John Mara, general manager Dave Gettleman, and assistant general manager Kevin Abrams in Bloomington, Minnesota.

The 52-year-old Shurmur, who had a two-year stint as the Cleveland Browns’ head coach, was the fourth person the Giants have spoken in their search to find a replacement for Ben McAdoo, who was fired on Dec. 4 after less than two years on the job. Giants interim Steve Spagnuolo was interviewed Wednesday and New England Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels were interviewed Friday in Foxborough, Mass.
