I was thinking the same thing but apparently it’s true.

It's misleading, because the 49ers were tied with the Rams at 17-17 entering the 4th. The Rams took the lead with 2 minutes to go. So the 49ers actually capitalized on a worse scenario which the stat doesn't highlight.

Are y'all just not reading the tweet or something? The guy on here said (erroneously) it was 5+ points, but in reality the stat is 8+ points.

This is just meant to highlight that if you go into the 4th quarter leading a Kyle Shanahan team by a touchdown or more, your odds of winning are virtually 100%. It also highlights that when Kyle Shanahan's offense has to just drop back and pass, it becomes very mediocre.

It's not saying anything about last minute heroics or GWD's.

Yes 8+ is max one possession. Any TD lead on any team entering the 4th is a victory about 95% of the time.

"Down eight at any time" is difficult to search, but there is info for "down 8+ at the start of the 4th quarter".

Since 2017, the 49ers, Commanders, Seahawks, Jets, and Cowboys all have not won a game when they were down at least 8 to start the fourth. Technically, the Jets are the worst there (0-45), while the Seahawks are the best (0-23).
The best team in those situations is, unsurprisingly, the Chiefs: 3-7, or .300
The Steelers (6-19) and Packers (6-21) are 2nd, and 3rd best.

Quickly browsing the Montana rolodex within the catacombs of my headscape, he only had 3 such games I can think of where he overcame an 7+ (max 1 possession for his era) deficit in the 4th. '80 vs. Saints, '83 at Rams, '89 at Rams. Don't think he had any as a Chief. Just goes to show that even with the mightiest of the mightiest, the odds are still unremarkable.

Going back to Shanahan, 0-36 for 8+ is still pretty bad. Even if half of that is Hoyer, Mullens, Beathard games. You'd think with as imaginative as Shanahan has been as an OC, and play designer his offenses would have been able to circumvent that at least one time in 7 seasons. Alas, his offensive brand of football is not ideal to going pass heavy when it's paramount. Still heart him as our head honcho though :)

Niners Nation stand the hell up. No team has ever won the Super Bowl while losing to Kirk Cousins. LFG.

It’s 100% a real stat.

here's another one...

only twice in NFL history has a QB:

  • had 35+ completions
  • completed 75% of his passes
  • thrown a 60 yard td pass
  • taken 0 sacks

one was Kirk Cousins against SF last night. the other was Kirk Cousins on Thanksgiving 2016.
