Anthony Campanile hired to be LB coach maybe? Silverstein seems to think highly of the hire and apparently he was a fav in Miami?

A former Boston College coordinator but that was a couple of years before Hafley became head coach. By the time Hafley arrived he was already in Miami.

Was interviewed twice for Miami's DC gig but didn't get it. Also was interviewed with the Giants but didn't get that one either.

I see he went to Michigan as LB coach - surprised he wasn't in the frame for the LA Chargers as they're too building their staff.

I'm a tad confused on why someone would be worried about Gary holding up against the run. That, to me personally, doesn't make any sense. I think even with a scheme change we'll see an improved Gary next year. Full off-season to build off of after having to go through the rehab and then being eased into things at the start of the season due to his injury. LVN and Gary on the edge is rather exciting and hopefully we can add a bit of depth behind them this offseason.

Gary is/was an excellent run defender at Michigan.  Idk why he wouldn't be successful except if he's regressing....

He seemed to have regressed this year.  Maybe like Zing said, he'll be healthier and stronger  this year.

Team metrics/grades were worse/lower against the run with Gary on the field. Gary was defintley better vs. the run toward the end of the year IMO. The discipline vs. the zone read was flat out terrible at times (see Atlanta game for a prime example).  His overall edge setting needs to improve for him to jump to the next level, putting his hand back in the ground as he did in Michigan might help. Obviously missing time with injury hurt his development but if he wants to take that jump to a great pass rusher to a premier edge player, his run defense needs to take a leap.

The confusion lies within the statement of a "4-3 defense".  And clearly we are in a nickel for the majority of the snaps, so it shouldn't be an issue.  Gary did it last year and held up fine.  Yeah, he gave up the edge a few times, but I also saw him getting a lot more attention out there.  I'm not worried in the least bit about the supposed "change" to the defense.

Gary's issue is discipline, and that can be coached.  There is no physical reason for him not to be an excellent run defender.

And who was coaching him last year? Rebrovich.

I'm amazed we're retained him. It was a good opportunity to start afresh with a new position coach and see if Gary takes to the new coaching and go up to a higher level.

Rebrovich's position was pass rush specialist. Not sure he was coaching Gary much on run defense. Jerry Montgomery was the DL/run game coordinator. Now that Rebrovich is likely to be DL coach, that relationship may change a bit.

This will be Gary's 6th season.  Sometimes 6th year guys with $96M contracts don't grow in discipline or get coached up a lot further.  HOpefully he'll be healthier and stronger, and whatever responsibilities they give to him will be ones he can fulfil.  But at this point he kinda probably is what he is, not likely to have a bunch of developmental upside left.

I don't know the details, but I think it's gotta be kinda tricksy when you're a pass rusher and a run stopper.  Pressure and sacks get so much attention.  One play, you dart past the OT on the inside and get a sack.  Star!  Next series, you dart past the OT on the inside, and the ball carrier gets around the corner outside.  How's a guy supposed to know in the moment whether it's good or bad to dart past the OT?  Sometimes "setting the edge" and "get in the backfield and make the QB uncomfortable" seem to be at cross purposes, no?
