Packers hire Mike Pettine as Defensive Coordinator

From Rob Reischel, former JSO reporter

" Pettine’s base defense is an aggressive 3-4. But Pettine said too much is made of the ‘3-4’ label as his teams are only in base approximately 15 snaps a game.

Instead, the defense revolves around the play of the two outside linebackers, which are called ‘Sam’ and ‘Rush.’ Those two players stand up in a conventional 3-4 scheme, but the ‘Rush’ ‘backer can also line up at defensive end in a traditional 4-3 defense.

Players like Calvin Pace and Bryan Thomas flip-flopped in those spots with the Jets. Mario Williams was terrific as the ‘Rush’ linebacker in Buffalo (13.0 sacks in 2013), while steady Manny Lawson played ‘Sam.’

It remains to be seen what roles Pettine eventually assigns Clay Matthews, Nick Perry and Green Bay’s other outside linebackers."

“You have to be able to adjust. … That’s part of the process now, evaluating the talent we have,” Pettine said. “I’ve always been a big believer in you have your system, and you have an idea of what you want and make every effort to build the roster that way, but in the meantime you can’t win with players you don’t have. So you have to assess who’s on campus and how can we best build the defense to take advantage of their skill sets.”

He can't just come out and say it, but it's pretty obvious Matthews has more of Lawson's skillset where as you want nothing to do with Perry in coverage, just like Mario Williams. Mario was more of a 4-3 DE than a 3-4 OLB. Be interesting to see what kind of rushers we look at this offseason. More of a versatile skillset like Matthews? or a straight rusher like Perry/Mario Williams.

Whitt and Pettine are trying to install a new D, but a lot of these guys are gonna have to be brought along slowly

"Green Bay got off to a strong start in 2017, ranked sixth in the NFL through five weeks, before injuries slowly took their toll on the secondary.

Versatile safety Morgan Burnett (quad), veteran Davon House (quad), dime safety Kentrell Brice (ankle), rookie second-round pick Kevin King (shoulder), and 2015 draft picks Damarious Randall (hand/knee) and Quinten Rollins (Achilles) combined to miss 37 games, with King, Brice and Rollins finishing the year on injured reserve.

Another prospect, converted receiver Herb Waters, was lost for the season early in training camp with a shoulder injury. He’s hopeful to be ready for OTAs.

“That’s the first thing we have to do is get healthy,” Whitt said. “I’m looking at OTAs, Kevin is coming off of surgery, Damarious is coming off of surgery, Quinten is coming off of surgery, Herb is coming off of surgery. Hopefully, we can get guys healthy and add a couple pieces. I think we have the core pieces that we can be a good secondary and a good defense – not just secondary.

The other thing they noted in the article is that with Whitt as Passing Game coordinator, his room will include CB's, Safeties and LBs all together

  • 3 weeks later...

Mike Pettine has had a full month to dive deep into Packers defensive roster - pretty much one full day per defensive player. He also had a bit of a head start last year as he consulted for the Seattles -  and would have studied GB as their season- opening opponent

Now Pettine, MM and Das Gute are off to the combine for all kinds of interesting discussions on players for the new Packers defense

Looking forward to any tidbits that slip out later this week.

And if the Packers are going to make any major personnel moves, this is often the time when those talks are initiated

LOL, so what was Pettine doing just twiddling his thumbs? Not "going off any theory", simply regurgitating what someone said on Twitter. Just a heads up btw, there is a heck of a lot that goes in being a DC than just calling plays.
