Thomas Morstead's gutty performance was unfortunately lost in the shuffle after the New Orleans Saints' devastating last-second playoff loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.

But it didn't go unnoticed by the Vikings fans, of all people.

Morstead said his “What You Give Will Grow” foundation received hundreds of donations from Vikings fans after the game. (UPDATED: The donations had climbed over $40,000 as of Wednesday afternoon after Morstead vowed to fly to Minnesota himself if the number climbed over $100,000 to deliver the proceeds to the Minnesota Child Life Program.)

The Vikings fans apparently appreciated the way Morstead played through the torn cartilage in his ribs that he suffered in the first quarter and the way he came back onto the field at the end of the game to line up as part of the defense when Case Keenum kneeled for the final two-point conversion try.

Morstead said his executive director texted him on Sunday night and told him they must be getting a lot of donations because of the exposure of the game. Then the director texted later, “Holy crap, these are all from Minnesota addresses.”

Morstead said he will donate the money he receives from Vikings fans to the Minnesota Child Life Program in order to make sure it “stays up there in their community.”

This is very cool.  I, too, was impressed with the way Morstead gutted it out through the pain.  Maybe we can get a bunch of FF members to send in a donation for a good cause.

Edit: As of an hour ago it was up to $70K.  Keep it coming Vikings Nation!   :)

Mark Rosen just tweeted that we hit $100K.  WTG Vikings fans.  Hopefully, this will make up a little to the Saints fans for some of our whining about Bountygate.  I'm sure it has to get old, but I can see both sides.  Either way, these are two GREAT fan bases!

While this story sounds great, and others like it give you a big fuzzy feeling, it's important to remember that almost all of these athletes have foundations set up for tax purposes. They can easily hire their family as administration and use donations to do nothing but pay them to sit around. Don't blindly give away money to these guys without looking into it.

Makes sense, but in this case, he said he was going to come back up to MN and publically give a donation to a Minnesota children's charity during the Super Bowl.

Yeah, that makes me feel like this scenario is cool because the guy is probably accountable. But how does anybody know if Blake Bortles foundation actually does anything?

Hard to say.  You would think that a guy who is as much exposure as Bortles would have to keep things above board though.  It would be pretty stupid to jeopardize his standing in his community and around the country just to save a few tax dollars.  Not to say that there aren't players out there who are big enough knuckleheads to do that..
