If anyone is looking for a good album to check out then listen to the new Randy Houser album Magnolia. Its amazing how good of an album someone can put out once they arent worried about the country charts. I had no clue Randy could be this good, and I liked his hit songs.

On Other Arrangements, Parker Millsap breaks new ground in his career. Up until this album, Millsap showed off his bluegrass, americana sound that was heavily influenced by his upbringing in a prodestant church. On this new project, he throws it all out the window, and shows off a more electric guitar, pop sounding album. The album starts off hard and heavy with Fine Line with Parker showing off his guitar talents and belting out a almost strictly rock sound. He then goes back and forth between the hard electric guitar, and slower popish love songs. Its not bad, but I dont think this music is right for Millsap, and his voice is better being used in much more traditional ways.(65/100)

There are points in Jason Aldean's latest album where you hear that straight arena rock country sound that he helped to pioneer in the mid 2000s. Its still his best sound, and it truly fits his personality and voice. Those songs are the standouts on the album. If he would have stayed with those sounds, this could have been his best album in a decade, but he just had to bring in electronic beats on about half of the other songs, and he even raps badly on one song. It feels like he is trying to do one thing, and his record label is trying to do another.(65/100)

Ben Danaher came out swinging when he released the first couple of songs off his album. Hell of High Water and Jesus Can See You are both songs about a woman who has done her man wrong. Both have strong Bible metaphor's in the songs, and both show off the strong, bluesy sound of Danaher's voice. The rest of the album tries to replicate this passion, but I dont really think he really hits with any of the other songs, like he does these two. Im still really impressed with Danaher's talent, and I think he has a lot of very good albums ahead of him.(66/100)

BJ Barham is probably one of the better songwriters in country/americana, and he definitely shows it throughout the newest American Aquarium album. He says what he is thinking at all times, and doesnt care what others think, and that includes peppering his thoughts about the political landscape in America. Stuff like that turns me away. A little here and there is fine, but too much is a distraction, and I think it distracts from a somewhat damn good album. The album is also a little disjointed. Some of the songs are perfect country music, and others are just straight up rock. Once again, something like this usually doesnt faze me if an album is good, but I just couldnt get into this album.(66/100)

Tucker Beathard had a nice little blip on the Nashville country radar a couple of years ago. His debut song, Rock On, went all the way to #2 on the country charts, but we havent heard anything from him since then. Beathard did not want to release the music that his label wanted to release, so after a long period, he was able to get out of his record contract, and he has released his first full length album on his own record label. There is some damn good writing on this album. For a guy to be so young, he is able to perfectly put a pen to a pad and pour out what is going on in his life. The album is definitely a lot more rock, and I would say it has some of a East Nashville sound. Thats good, and it can be bad. I think its a worthy debut, but he can definitely improve musically.(67/100)

If you ask me, American Aquarium is one of the most underrated bands in Americana/American Rock. I struggle to classify them as a country band because they do invoke a lot southern rock, bluegrass, etc into their tunes. I agree that Things Change is an OK album, but it does have a couple of amazing songs. BJ is one of the best in the biz right now, and I he's all the storyteller that someone like Jason Isbell is, with a similar story, just doesn't have the following yet.

Seeing them at Red Rocks in a few months!

American Aquarium has two big problems that probably keeps them from being bigger. First, BJ is an ***. He's brash, combative with almost anyone that has an opinion that is different from his. This leads to #2. He interjects his politics and beliefs in almost anything. I dont want to say that he needs to shut up and sing. All artists should be able to express themselves in any way they want, but he needs to learn some tact.

I didnt realize just how big of a release day yesterday was until I checked my spotify.

New albums from King George, Jake Owen, and Steve Earle. Ill add the new album from LoCash as well, but thats not something Im going to give more than one or two spins. New singles from Luke Bryan, Midland, Casey Donahew, Jana Kramer, Rich O'Toole, a duet with Granger Smith and Earl Dibbles Jr, and Blake Shelton.

Ive listened to George's new album a few times now, and its definitely one of the best he has put out in a while. A lot less filler. Had the Jake album on in the background yesterday. Nothing stood out. The new song from Luke is really rapey and probably his worst song ever. Midland sounds like what a pre-packaged Music Row band should sound like. I really like the new Donahew song. Jana Kramer is meh. I expected a little more from O'Toole. Its a safe and bland song, and the Granger Smith song is just fun. Not meant to be taken seriously. I dont really have an opinion on the Blake Shelton song. Its way too overproduced, but I dont hate it. Im not sure yet.

Trust me I know this first hand. I've met him a few times and had those discussion with him, as well as via twitter and other social media channels. We've gotten to know each other quite well over the past few years. He's at his best when he's telling his story- which is obviously influenced by his beliefs- But so is Jason Isbell who makes that quite clear in his channels, but is able to (so far, for the most part) keep that out of his music.

Thats the reason I added the tact part. Isbell talks about politics and what not in interviews, but he really isnt an *** about it(most of the time). White Man's World from the Nashville Sound album was probably the worst song on that album, and its the most preachy song he's ever done.

My personal preference is that no matter how much I love the artist, I dont want to hear their politics, religion(for the most part), or cliched songs about how much the love their mom or dad that everyone puts out now(Mitchell Tenpenny and William Clark Green come to mind from 2018). I didnt listen to the latest albums from Drive-By Truckers and Will Hoge for these very reasons.

American Aquarium is one of the bands that I havent seen live yet that Id love to see. They are coming to Nashville in July and if Im in town, Ill definitely go see them. I am jealous you are going to Red Rocks. Ive always wanted to go, but it has to be for the right artist.

Yeah but their butts slap

I cant get into a groups music that is basically a boy band that was put together by a record label.

But Im not saying that Old Town Road is a country song. Its not. Country music is defined by stringed instruments, and all that song has is a looped beat. I just think its a fun song that will be out of the minds of everyone in a month and forgotten much like every viral song that has come along the past twenty years.
