Despite the rule changes and shift toward a pass happy league, the NFL record for passing yards in a game has stood for 67 years

Ben would have probably broken it in 2014 vs the Colts if he realized during the game how close he was to it.

Good one!

Look at Van Brocklin's TD passes in that 54-14 win:

-- Elroy CRAZY LEGS Hirsch, 41 yards

-- Vitamin Smith, 67 yards

-- Hirsch, 47 yards

-- Hirsch, 26 yards

-- Hirsch, 1 yard

At one point in Steeler history QB Mark Malone actually caught the longest TD pass of 90 yards in 1981.

That same year kicker David Trout missed EIGHT extra points. Yes, EIGHT. He went 38/46.

None of Trout's XP misses cost the Steelers a game that year, however. The previous season, 1980, kicker Matt Bahr missed two extra points each in divisional games which the Steelers lost by just one point. The Steelers could have potentially been 11-5 and tied for the division lead. Instead, they were 9-7 and out of the playoffs.

Tom Brady once threw for 505 yards in the Super Bowl. His team never punted the ball. However, they lost.

Honestly though he had a hell of a game. There’s a lot of crazy stats that can be pulled from that one.

Brady is the only QB since the merger who has thrown for over 500 yards in a playoff game and lost.

And if you want a really bad year for a Steeler kicker, Harry Newsome had six punts blocked in 1988.

Some more neat stuff.

Wide receiver Ron Smith participated in three consecutive playoffs with three different teams: with the Rams in 1979, the Chargers in 1980 and the Eagles in 1981.

The Lions' Pat Studstill was the NFL's leader in receiving yards in 1966. The next year he led the league in a different category - average yards per punt.

The 1980 Vikings lost three fumbles in their divisional playoff loss to the Eagles. That total matched the number they had coughed up all during the regular season.

In 1988 Cleveland's Earnest Byner had 576 yards rushing and 576 yards receiving.

The Seahawks are the only team in the NFL to have never worn their white jerseys at home.

In 1960-61, the NFL had three different players named J.D. Smith.

Dallas defensive lineman Larry Cole had four career touchdowns - all against the Washington Redskins. Three of these were earned during his first two years in the league. He waited a full ten years before scoring on the Redskins again in a 1980 game.

In 1972 game against St. Louis, the Eagles' Bill Bradley punted the ball away to the Cardinals. He then got the ball back for his team by intercepting a pass on the very next play.

In 1943, the Giants and the Redskins faced off against each other for three consecutive weeks in December. The Giants swept the last two scheduled games with the 'Skins to force a tie and a divisional playoff. Unfortunately, they couldn't make it a hat trick and the Redskins won the playoff to take the division title.

Really crazy and depressing Bucs leitmotif where they start out good and choke midway or near the end of the season.

2007 - Started: 8-4 Finished: 9-7 - They limped into the playoffs that year.

2008 - Started: 9-3 Finished: 9-7

2011 - Started: 4-2 Finished: 4-12

2012 - Started: 6-4 Finished: 7-9

2015 - Started: 6-6 Finished: 6-10

2017 - Started: 2-1 Finished: 5-11

No QB dominated a decade the way Bart Starr did in the 1960s. From 1960 to 67 he and the Packers were in most title games. Only Bill Wade in Chicago and Frank Ryan in Cleveland in 63 and 64 won the championsip on run and defense oriented teams. Not until Lombardi stepped down did other QBs emerge.

Adrian Burk was a QB for the Eagles in the 1950s who threw 7 TDs in one game. Later he became legal counsel for the Oilers and a game official. He was on the field when Joe Kapp threw 7 TDs and again for the Immaculate Reception, Steelers over Raiders.

Pretty sure Thursday Night Tom Brady will get a chance to either tie or break the all time win record for a single player. The current record holder is Adam Vinatieri who is on the Colts he will be facing (and also fameously Tom’s former teammate)

Easily the most over looked great coach in league history is Weeb Ewbank. He won three championships by defeating the following coaches:

Vince Lombardi, Tom Landry, Chuck Noll, Don McCafferty, Jim Lee Howell, Bill Arnsbarger and Allie Sherman, who had won a combined 15 championships as head coaches.
