Singapore Sentinels

SINGAPORE Week 11

Motivation - Division game against a weaker opponent. We still have hopes of making a surge and getting to the playoffs. Every game is win or die from here on out.

Offensive Strategy

Formations: 21 / 12/ 22/ 11 | Scheme:  Run (58%) vs Pass (42%)

Blocking - Despite some spurious claims last week about our OL, in addition to protecting the QB (still 5.5 sacks given up), they are all plus run blockers as well. Teams know we run the ball first but it is still hard to stop with the best FB in the league and an excellent group of run blocking WR’s and TE in the mix as well.

Running Attack
We love the matchup this week against Portland’s DL. Orakpo and Smith are stand up LB’s and give up lots of mass versus our OL. Short is good in the middle but Jones is just average. We’re going to wear down the edges as the Owls depth is limited on the DL and by the 4th quarter our home run hitters in Hunt and Conner can break the big one. Hunt again will get 60% of the carries with Conner getting 35%. McGuire nabs the final 5%. We love to mix it up with our 21 personnel so you will see a mixture of Hunt and Conner in the backfield at the same time. Our WR get in the mix as well on Jet sweeps with Allen and Baldwin  or a quick shuffle pass to Ebron at the Goal line.

Passing Game
Portland will need to keep 3 LB’s on the field to stop our run game. Which is a good thing because their secondary is their strength. Having a LB trying to cover Hunt or Juszczyk out of the slot is a mismatch. Mullens has a quick release, which will allow us to hit some quick crossing patterns and swing passes out to the flat to get our offense moving. Allen and Baldwin are our core weapons along with Ebron in the Red Zone. We like their matchups against Smith and Trufant in a zone scheme as Mullens will be able to hit the open receiver with the windows that will be left open. Higbee and Ebron will get some 2 TE looks and once we’ve gassed the Owls DL we’ll spread them out for a play or two and look to attack the middle with Davis and Moore.

TL;DR: Score points on the ground while wearing out the DL. Our skill players have scored about 40TD’s this year so I still don’t understand these X-10/17 scores.

Defensive Strategy

Formations:   4-2-5 (Nickel) / 3-2 Big Dime | Scheme:  Cover 2 / Zone concept with Blitz

Run D/Pressure
Limiting Mahomes time to throw will be the key to this game. Good thing we can bring pressure from both the outside and inside simultaneously. Hunter and Griffen get a tasty matchup this week against an injured Owls OL. Donald similarly faces a shuffled presence in the middle. Our front is stout against any running attack with Snacks in the middle , fortunately for us the run game for Portland is very anemic. No one is scared of Barber or Shady this year.

Coverage
The main threat for Portland is Mahomes to Adams. We’re going to switch it up this week to a Cover 2 to limit the big play.  Bates and Maye will drop into coverage on their respective sides and give support over the top to Claiborne and Waynes. Claiborne will press Adams at the line to disrupt his timing, Waynes will have Boyd with King covering a familiar face in Sanu out of the slot. Jaylon Smith will cover Hooper and we welcome back Deion Jones this week. We will ease him in this week at the weak side but his main job will be to drop in coverage over the middle to jump a route and pick Mahomes off.

With no real 2nd TE, if Portland goes 4 WR we will go to a Big Dime look bringing in John Johnson to replace Jones and take Maye’s spot in the back of the Cover 2 switching Maye to primary coverage on the 4th WR. Duke Dawson also gets a few reps this week as we welcome him back from IR.

TL:DR: Pressure Mahomes. Press the WR at the line to disrupt timing. Limit the big play.

Portland Horned Owls

Motivation:

  • Beat Singapore and don't give Louisiana the no.1 pick.

Portland Offensive Gameplan:

  • Establish the run early, move the pocket to keep Mahomes clean, run the ball and commit to it, use play action to take shots down the field. Expect a run heavy offense in the 1st half with the focus on establishing the running game and letting Mahomes pick apart Singapore

The Passing Game:

  • Mahomes has established himself as a top 2 QB in the NFL so we feel he can more or less do anything asked of him, Mahomes will be be allowed to audible and adjust plays as he sees fit and we'll focus on getting deep against a Singapore secondary featuring some of the best in BDL, we feel we can beat them deep with our big play weapons.
  • Singapores pass rush featuring Donald and Griffin is one of the best in BDL, however we feel our o-line is up to the task of keeping Mahomes protected. If we can't get anything going deep we'll attack the middle of the field specifically targeting Waynes and King in coverage, Davante Adams will be our no.1 WR and will be featured heavily and with Claiborne more than likely covering him he should be able to win that matchup.
  • Boyd will be our slot WR and he'll see quite a few targets this week, he'll play outside in 2 WR sets and in the slot in 3 wide. In 3 and 4 WR sets Sanu will be the no.3 and Ross will be the no.4, we'll take a few deep shots to Boyd+Adams to try and take advantage of their big play ability.
  • Austin Hooper will get the nod at TE and will be a do it all TE but he'll mostly be limited to being a check down option for Mahomes and a blocker when needed, he'll get a bunch of targets since we feel he's a mismatch and is finally coming into his own this season after being a 5-50-1 guy for most of his career. Austin Hooper will be used a decent amount in this game as he'll be tasked with helping as a blocker and being a checkdown option.
  • We'll feature our RBs in the passing game a bit to keep Singapore guessing, Peyton Barber will be our no.1 RB and despite what his stats suggest he is a functional RB who can do all the things required of him, we'll split the touches about 70:30 to keep Barber fresh and healthy and get McCoy some touches so he can look like his old self behind a much better o-line.

The Running Game:

  • LeSean McCoy and Barber will split carries 70:30 with Barber receiving the edge in carries and touches, we'll try and establish our running game early to help tire out Singapore's defense for later in the game, we'll leave a RB/TE in to pass protect as needed, we'll make running the ball and setting up play action a priority.

The Blocking:

  • In case of injuries, Beachum will play LT/RT, Jones will play C/G. We'll also leave a RB/TE in to pass protect or give extra attention/blocking to a pass rusher if someone proves to be a problem, most likely we'll slide extra protection to Ingram or  double team their interior lineman..

TDLR;

  • Control the LOS, win the battles in the trenches, Make plays in the redzone area, finish drives with points.

Portland Defensive Gameplan:

  • Max zone coverage to force Mullens to hold onto the ball longer so our pass rush can get after him, we'll play some man but our main focus will be shutting down Singapore's WRs.

Pass Coverage:

  • We'll be playing zone defense on 70% of the snaps with a decent amount of blitzes. Trufant will be the no.1 CB  he'll also get some help over the with whoever he's covering for a decent chunk of the game, Jimmy Smith will man the no.2 CB spot and should be able to handle whoever he is assigned to cover on the play despite what his play has indicated his name value should make up for the fact he's been terrible this year. If a WR goes into the slot the CB/Defender assigned to cover them will follow them into the slot, Brandon Carr otherwise will be the no.3 CB/Slot CB and will play in the redzone and on 3rd downs in favor of Jimmy Smith.
  • Singapores offense boasts one of the best trio of WRs in BDL with Allen, Baldwin,Davis all being solid no.1 WRs. Mullens has played well this year for a scrub 4th string QB.
  • Glover Quinn will be tasked with adjusting the pass coverage as needed, I'd expect my front seven should be able to put pressure on Wentz and control the LOS.
  • Telvin Smith will be the signal caller on defense and he'll make adjustments if Singapore tries something not outlined in the gameplan.  Orakpo+Smith will be able to get after Ryan along with Barrett rotating in, Short+Jones should be able to keep Singapore's inside running game in check and Pierce will rotate in with Jones on running downs/goaline situations.
  • Telvin Smith will make adjustments as the signal caller on defense as needed, we'll make sure to give equal attention to Singapore's top 3 WRs, Singapore's RBs and TEs are a massive mismatch in the passing game so we'll cover them. Ebron however is just a stat stuffing medicore TE who scores fluky TDs.

Run Defense:

  • Singapore's RBs are something to be feared given they have two elite no.1 RBs in their backfield, we'll be prepared to defend them.
  • Za'Darius Smith stepped up in a huge way 5 weeks ago with 3 sacks, he has earned a starting job opposite Orakpo and has already set/tied a career high in sacks, he'll be a big help in the run game and in getting after the QB.
  • While our focus is in defending the pass in this matchup, we won't forget about/ignore the run.

TLDR;  Win at the LOS, control their running lanes, limit their WRs, Defend the thing, cover well, keep them out of the endzone.

Back and forth with this game.

Sing has the better defense, but after looking at the top two backs from each team, Portland's backs had a lot of success with their two backs in their last games as both rushed for over 100+ and a combined 3 TD's.  Combine that with the disadvantage of Sing quarterback vs Patrick Mahomes.  I went Portland in this matchup.

Your offensive skill players are better sure but Portland's are passable. OL's are a wash, perhaps slight edge Singapore. Mahomes is top 5 and Mullins might not be top 50.

Then on D obviously there's a pretty decisive edge for Sing's DL but with Jones out, Portland's got a slightly better back 7 imo.

It's not all that matters, but this is by far the biggest gap in qb quality of any match in the BDL. With Jimmy, sure you win, but as it is now its just too great a gap in quality between th most important position.

Jlash losing games cause of auto votes against Alex Smith calls for complaint because Smith's proven to be a competent top 20 qb for years. Mullins was 3rd string and had one good game.
