Nah, that doesn't always fail. It fails when guys don't wrap up. No reason that should have gone for first down.

Or the defense could actually fly to the ball with all eyes on the receiver and stop him short of the first down.

And they're not mutually exclusive. It was a bad call made worse by bad tackling.

I agree it shouldn't have gone for a first down, but that tends to happen when you let a guy run 10 yards untouched before the defense has a chance to tackle. And yes, that has happened a ridiculous amount of times and is part of the reason the team was horrendous in 3rd and long defense last year. Because Saleh calls it and it fails.
