Doesn't make a lot of sense to me to trade for Akiem Hicks AND pay Hargrave. What is the point of that? They won't see the field together a ton, and you don't need three top tier guys to rotate when you're paying both Smith's. If you're going to spend more in the front, it would have made a little more sense to sign a guy who would play OLB to rotate with Gary and the Smith's, since Gary will likely get more inside snaps this season on passing downs. As it stands, though, our offense takes a pretty clear step backwards. Maybe a rookie RB can replicate some of what Jones gave us. Maybe. But the WRs are still bad. TE is still meh. RB group is poor. Strong DL is the foundation of just about any strong defense. Adding 2 NFL ready DL improves the run D, pass D. Clark, Hargrave and Hicks would be in more of a rotation. Clark played 83% of the defensive snaps in 2019....869 total. Trying to drop that to 65-70%. Dean Lowry played 61%, 637 total. Tyler Lancaster played 36%, 381 total. Montravius Adams played 18%, 187 total. Take 15 % from clark...150 snaps Take 45 % from Lowry...450 snaps Take 20 % from Lancaster...200 snaps Take 15% from Adams...150 snaps That is 950 snaps to split. Better 3 man rotation and offers some better options for pettine with better run D and pass rush on more downs from the IDL. Lowry generated 10 TOTAL QB pressures, knockdowns, hurries and sacks in his 637 snaps. Lancaster 5.5 TOTAL in 381 snaps Adams.....0 in 187 snaps. Hargrave....28 in 680 snaps. As others have said, what happens if the draft picks take time to be reliable in protection ? What happens if the guys you want get taken ? Are you going to have to trade up and reach ? The OL still looks a real strength but is a year older and given 4/5s of it are getting on a bit, in reality has to be expected to regress (whether skill or the increased injury chance). As it stands, you would need to hit on multiple picks just to reverse the damage of the Adams trade. Let alone try and fix the problems from last season and hedge against an ageing OL.
