So 17th game. We know there's a cycle to which divisions you play. Every year you also play the 2 teams in your non division opponent that finished in your spot in the standings. You take the other conference rotation. For example East west north south. For game 17 you go in the same cycle but 2 years delayed. The year you play the East your game 17 is vs the North. Makes it so you won't play the same team in the other conference two years in a row and keeps the cycle so it won't have years you'd play a team in the other conference twice. Just a thought.

absolutely. owners of a business always have long-term views and project how things are going to work in the distant future, and prepare themselves for it.

players think much more immediately, so the owners make immediate concessions to appease the players whilst they take back things that will benefit themselves much more in the long run.

Yeah. The average length of an NFL career is ~3yrs. The average number of years someone owns a team is likely close to 30yrs. Obviously, the owners will take the long-term view, while the majority of players will rightfully take the short-term view. That’s why it’s annoying seeing people call the players “stupid” and other such names. They’re at a massive disadvantage both money-wise and time-wise and the owners and players both know it. This isn’t targeted at you btw, just piggybacking off your post.

Probably should just be voted on by an NFLPA executive committee like the one that voted against this CBA before it went to a players vote. They also probably shouldn't ever do deals more than 3 years because they can't really represent players 10 years from now because 99% of the players who voted will be out of the league.

Also 17 games is dumb and 1 playoff bye is even dumber.

Yeah, 10 years? The NFLPA is a joke.

My interest was waning already and the 17th game triggers my OCD because 16 is way better mathematically

Easiest way to make it work would be to remove the 2 games against the conference opponents that finished the same place in divisions with 3 cross conference matches of opponents that finished in divisions.

The owners are much better at this than the players

What do you expect when you have successful businessman going against people with no degree or rubbish ones.

By saying that how do the nba players do so well in their negotiations. With one and done rule. Better representation is the only way.

But even saying that the average nfl atleast matter in negotiations where in the nba it seems all the stars make the money and the rest not so much.

Not a fan of the 17 games at all the records will be messed up with 5 years

How about if you clinch with 2 games to go will you just rest your players for last two games ?

My thoughts on the extra game is maybe do what they do over here in australia they have rivalry round where you play your rivals. Nfl could use it to start some rivals  that happen each year, make sure there teams from different conferences if you can cause they don't play each other often. Imagine a round where both NY teams , LA teams , Texas teams, Raiders vs 49ers, Patriots vs Eagles, Ravens vs Redskins all play each other. The next year you just make the home team from this year play away the next year. Extra game solved.

that ruins the "every team plays 4 games against 1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place and 4th place teams every year" and would benefit the "good" teams from the previous year. I doubt the league wants that. It also removes a LOT of potential "premier" games.

No it doesn't.

There would still be 6 Divisional games, 4 games against an in-conference division, 4 games against a cross conference division, then instead of the 2 games against in conference teams at the same placement in a division, it's replaced by 3 games against cross conference teams.  How does that help them or remove potential premiere games.

oh nevermind, I misread. You are suggesting exactly that replacement: NFC first place team would play all 4 first place teams in AFC instead of NFC. Net change is every team plays an additional game vs the same ranked team from previous year. It would actually create more potentially premier games (and cross-conference).

I like this idea and agree it's probably the best option I've heard.
