Browns General Discussion

Those moves were easy compared to what comes next. Now, it’s free agency. I’ve heard the Browns will “take some big swings” at a couple of big names. They believe they must sign at least one.

After the season, I heard the Browns’ top three on the roster priority list in order was this: 1) Defensive line. 2) An impact safety. 3) A speedy receiver. None of this is new, but it’s good to know the speculation is right.

Here’s the problem with the defensive line ... defensive end Myles Garrett is the only quality starter. They need a good defensive end. They need a major acquisition at one defensive tackle, and another who is solid. The two big names are Javon Hargrave (who played for Schwartz in Philadelphia) and Denver’s Dre’Mont Jones. I keep thinking one of them ends up in Cleveland. A St. Ignatius and Ohio State product, Jones plays tackle and end, which has to be appealing to the Browns.

Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot mentioned Yannick Ngakoue as a possibility at defensive end. On a short-term Jadeveon Clowney deal ... I like it. I write that knowing he’s played with four teams in the last three years. And he’s weak against the run. But he’s only 28. He had 9.5 sacks for the Colts last season. He’s never had fewer than eight sacks in any of his seven pro seasons. Pro Football Focus wrote: “Ngakoue is a pure pass-rush specialist, offering very little in run defense over his career, but his ability to get home from a wide-nine alignment is a very valuable trick to have in the bag.”

Yannick I'd be cool with on a short-term deal like Pluto said. No thanks to giving him any massive contract though.

How is Jones? Guess I haven't paid much attention to his pro career.

3 tech who probably would better excel as a 3-4 end. I’m not sure he’s gonna he worth what he ends up getting. But there’s no doubt he’d be a massive upgrade over the garbage we had at DT last year.

Ngakoue is barely better than clowney. We would just barely be breaking even from last year. And will probably cost more.

Yannick only rushes the passer (forces fumbles though). He’s the opposite of Clowney.

We’d need 2 fatties playing run D to protect him and Myles.

He’s never had under 8 sacks in his career whereas Clowney has had that like one or two times. He’s better than Clowney.
