I am guessing the reason the NFLPA wants zero preseason games -  is because all of the player contracts state that if they are on roster for Game 1, their salary for the year is guaranteed. So long as they make it through first game, they get paid their paragraph 5 salary. Bonuses are a different story

also, the players dont get paid (much) for preseason games. so this is an easy recommendation for them to make. Im sure they would make this recommendation basically every year if they could. Players dont start getting game checks until week 1. preseason is 100% profit for the NFL

It would just be sheer stupidity.

Assuming they play the season, its 1000% in the league's interest for any player positive to be quarantined. League can get by fine with some players out. It can't get by fine if those players pass it on to the rest of the team.

Regardless of what you think of the league, the head guys will possess some level of intelligence above zero.

Even the most ardent detractor of the league office and owners has to admit that they are good at thinking of their bank accounts/franchise values at the very least. It would make zero sense for them to risk everything just to put some players on the field in a year that's already going to be a bit down. If anything, they would have an incentive to take their licks of all kinds this year (what's often called taking a "big bath") because 2020 is less likely to be held against them for valuation purposes, i.e., paying penalties to get out of bad deals (business side of the house), impairing assets, etc.

From my experience in England with the Premier League, when it started, people were just happy to be able to watch games again. Its reasonable to expect some level of quality drop in the actual matches themselves. People will to some extent be happy to have the NFL and will tolerate some of the stars missing at times. It doesn't make any sense for the league to put it all at risk just to get say Mahones on the field.

The other factor is that relatively speaking, the results of Premier League games are far more important than the NFL. In the Premier League, a bad season can mean relegation, missing Europe which could cost hundreds of millions. So not being able to pick a star player due to Covid would be far more damaging.  In the NFL in the grand scheme of things, results are less important. If you have a bad season then its a bummer but there is no long-term impact in fact, it can almost be a positive (hence the tank for xxx). So a team missing a star player isn't such a big deal. It would be better for Kansas City to play the season out without Mahones if it came down to it.

Practice is gonna be a dog fight.

At least practice squads got increased.

especially when you consider the lack of available jobs out there right now. A lot of these guys will literally be fighting for their livelihood

its the difference between unemployed and making six figures right out of college. A lot of these guys that dont make it at least would have a fall back plan under normal circumstances
