German Mock Draft 2021 Edition

As every year I did a mock draft with 31 other guys from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and I took over Gute's duties for the first 4 rounds. Here's what I ended up with:

Round 1

1) Jacksonville Jaguars - Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson
2) New York Jets - Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
3) San Francisco 49ers (from Houston via Miami) - Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State
4) Atlanta Falcons - Kyle Pitts, TE, Florida
5) New England Patriots (from Cincinnati Bengals) - Trey Lance, QB, North Dakota State
6) Miami Dolphins (from Philadelphia) - Ja'Marr Chase, WR, LSU
7) Detroit Lions - Penei Sewell, OT, Oregon
8 ) Carolina Panthers - Christian Darrisaw, OT, Virginia Tech
9) Denver Broncos - Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
10) Dallas Cowboys - Patrick Surtain II, CB, Alabama
11) New York Giants - Jaylen Waddle, WR, Alabama
12) Philadelphia Eagles (from San Francisco via Miami) - DeVonta Smith, WR, Alabama
13) Los Angeles Chargers - Rashawn Slater, OT, Northwestern
14) Minnesota Vikings - Alijah Vera-Tucker, OT, USC
15) Cincinnati Bengals (from New England Patriots) - Kwity Paye, DE, Michigan
16) Chicago Bears (from Arizona Cardinals) - Mac Jones, QB, Alabama
17) Tennessee Titans (from Las Vegas Raiders) - Jaycee Horn, CB, South Carolina
18) Miami Dolphins - Jaelan Phillips, DE, Miami
19) Washington Football Team - Zaven Collins, LB, Tulsa
20) Arizona Cardinals (from Chicago Bears) - Caleb Farley, CB, Virginia Tech
21) Indianapolis Colts - Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, LB/S, Notre Dame
22) Las Vegas Raiders (from Tennessee Titans) - Teven Jenkins, OT, OK State
23) New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks) - Greg Newsome, CB, Northwestern
24) Pittsburgh Steelers - Najee Harris, RB, Alabama
25) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams) - Christian Barmore, DT, Alabama
26) Cleveland Browns - Jayson Oweh, DE, Penn State
27) Baltimore Ravens - Creed Humphrey, C, Oklahoma
28) New Orleans Saints - Azeez Ojulari, DE, Georgia
29) Carolina Panthers (from Green Bay Packers) - Landon Dickerson, C, Alabama
30) Buffalo Bills - Gregory Rousseau, DE, Miami
31) Kansas City Chiefs - Carlos Basham, Wake Forest
32) New York Jets (from Tampa Bay Buccaneers) - Rashod Bateman, WR, Minnesota

Round 2

33) Jacksonville Jaguars - Alex Leatherwood, OT, Alabama
34) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from New York Jets) - Joseph Ossai, DE, Texas
35) Atlanta Falcons - Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson
36) Dallas Cowboys (from Texans via Dolphins) - Trevon Moehrig, S, TCU
37) Philadelphia Eagles - Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State
38) Cincinnati Bengals - Sam Cosmi, OT, Texas

39) Green Bay Packers (from Carolina Panthers) - Asante Samuel, CB, FSU

With my main targets Greg Newsome II and Christian Barmore off the board at 29 I decided to take an uptrade offer from the Carolina Panthers. I sent 29 and 135 to CAR for 39 and 73. Not a very usual trade, but we were limited to trade 2021 draft picks. Samuel was my fallback option for 29, so I was lucky to just upgrade my late 4th to an early 3rd without missing out on a player. Size isn't an issue for me as we all see what undersized corners can do everytime we watch #23 play.

40) Denver Broncos - Jaylen Mayfield, OT, Michigan
41) Cincinnati Bengals (from Detroit Lions) - Elijah Moore, WR, Ole Miss
42) Miami Dolphins (from New York Giants) - Kadarius Toney, WR, Florida
43) San Francisco 49ers - Dillon Radunz, OT, North Dakota State
44) New York Giants (from Miami Dolphins) - Liam Eichenberg, OT, Notre Dame
45) Tennessee Titans (from Vikings via Jaguars) - Terrace Marshall, WR, LSU
46) Detroit Lions (from Patriots via Bengals) - Nick Bolton, LB, Missouri
47) Los Angeles Chargers - Levi Onwuzurike, DT, Washington
48) Las Vegas Raiders - Jamin Davis, LB, Kentucky
49) Arizona Cardinals - Rondale Moore, WR, Purdue
50) Miami Dolphins - Javonte Williams, RB, UNC
51) Washington Football Team - Richie Grant, S, UCF
52) Chicago Bears - Walker Little, OT, Stanford
53) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Tennessee Titans) - Jevon Holland, S, Oregon
54) Indianapolis Colts - Brady Christensen, OT, BYU
55) Pittsburgh Steelers - Wyatt Davis, OG, Ohio State
56) Tampa Bay Buccaneers (from Seahawks) - Elijah Molden, CB, Washington
57) Los Angeles Rams - Trey Hill, C, Georgia
58) Baltimore Ravens - Jamar Johnson, S, Indiana
59) Cleveland Browns - Ifeatu Melifonwu, CB, Syracuse
60) New Orleans Saints - Tyson Campbell, CB, Georgia
61) Buffalo Bills - Joe Tryon, DE, Washington

62) Green Bay Packers - James Hudson, OT, Cincinnati

I was hoping that one of the Tier 2 OTs will fall to 62, but there was quite a run on them mid of the 2nd. I personally would have preferred a more experienced plug and play OT with the unknown situation of DBakh and the loss of Wagner, but had to go with upside instead. Hudson has only one year of starting experience, but has all the tools to become an excellent OT in the NFL. So maybe this pick doesn't turn out right away, but in the future. Hudson was the last OT that I considered here, if he was gone, I would have picked Jabril Cox.

63) Kansas City Chiefs - Eric Stokes, CB, Georgia
64) Seattle Seahawks (from Buccaneers) - Josh Myers, OC, Ohio State

Round 3

65) Jacksonville Jaguars - Dyami Brown, WR, UNC
66) New York Jets - Jabril Cox, LB, LSU
67) Houston Texans - Aaron Robinson, CB, UCF
68) Atlanta Falcons - Hamsah Nasirildeen, S, FSU
69) Dallas Cowboys (from Cincinnati Bengals) - Daviyon Nixon, DT, Iowa
70) Philadelphia Eagles - Andre Cisco, S, Syracuse
71) Denver Broncos - Kenneth Gainwell, RB, Memphis
72) Detroit Lions - Marvin Wilson, DT, FSU

73) Green Bay Packers (from Carolina Panthers) - Alim McNeill, DT, NC State

Kenny Clark is the only NT on the roster that you can trust on and with drafting the big boy out of NC State I think he has at least a solid backup, but also one guy to plug in at NT and move Kenny outside at the same time.

74) Washington Football Team (from San Francisco 49ers) - Michael Carter, RB, UNC
75) Cincinnati Bengals (from Dallas Cowboys) - Kelvin Joseph, CB, Kentucky
76) New York Giants - Chazz Surratt, LB, UNC
77) Los Angeles Chargers - Paulson Adebo, CB, Stanford
78) Minnesota Vikings - Quinn Meinerz, C, Wisconson-Whitewater
79) Las Vegas Raiders (from Arizona Cardinals) - Jay Tufele, DT, USC
80) Las Vegas Raiders - Jackson Carman, OG, Clemson
81) Miami Dolphins - Baron Browning, LB, Ohio State
82) Washington Football Team - Tommy Tremble, TE, Notre Dame
83) Arizona Cardinals (from Chicago Bears) - Brevin Jordan, TE, Miami
84) Philadelphia Eagles (from Indianapolis Colts) - Kyle Trask, QB, Florida
85) Las Vegas Raiders (from Tennessee Titans) - Tylan Wallace, WR, Oklahoma State
86) New York Jets (from Seattle Seahawks) - Khalil Herbert, RB, Vriginia Tech
87) Pittsburgh Steelers - Spencer Brown, OT, Northern Iowa
88) Los Angeles Rams - Cameron McGrone, LB, Michigan
89) Cleveland Browns - Osa Odigizuwa, DT, UCLA
90) Minnesota Vikings (from Baltimore Ravens) - Ronny Perkins, DE, Oklahoma
91) Cleveland Browns (from New Orleans Saints) - Ihmir Smith-Marsette, WR, Iowa

92) Green Bay Packers - Amon-Ra St. Brown, WR, USC

EQ's younger and way more talented brother. He would be the clear slot guy and another dangerous weapon for ARod. Plus with no WRs under contract after 2021 I wanted to dip in there early. It was a toss up between him and D'Wayne Eskridge, who was picked very shortly after my selection.

93) Buffalo Bills - Tay Gowan, CB, UCF
94) Kansas City Chiefs - Stone Forsythe, OT, Florida
95) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Demetric Felton, RB, UCLA
96) Cincinnati Bengals (from New England Patriots; compensatory selection) - Hunter Long, TE, Boston College
97) Los Angeles Chargers (compensatory selection) - D'Wayne Eskridge, WR, Western Michigan
98) New Orleans Saints (compensatory selection) - Trey Smith, OG, Tennessee
99) Miami Dolphins (from Cowboys, compensatory selection) - Kellen Mond, QB, Texas A&M
100) Tennessee Titans (compensatory selection) - Payton Turner, DE, Houston
101) Detroit Lions (from Los Angeles Rams; compensatory selection) - Davis Mills, QB, Stanford
102) San Francisco 49ers (special compensatory selection) - Patrick Johnson, DE, Tulane
103) Los Angeles Rams (special compensatory selection) - Shemar Jean-Charles, CB, Appalachian State
104) Baltimore Ravens (special compensatory selection) - Austin Watkins Jr., WR, UAB
105) New Orleans Saints (special compensatory selection) - Tyler Shelvin, DT, LSU

Round 4

106) Jacksonville Jaguars - Hamilcar Rashed, DE, Oregon State
107) New York Jets - Kendrick Green, OG, Illinois
108) Atlanta Falcons - Ben Cleveland, OG, Georgia
109) Houston Texans - Nico Collins, WR, Michigan
110) Cleveland Browns (from Philadelphia Eagles) - Justin Hilliard, LB, Ohio State
111) Cincinnati Bengals - Aaron Banks, OG, Notre Dame
112) Detroit Lions - Amari Rodgers, WR, Clemson
113) Carolina Panthers - Robert Rochell, CB, Central Arkansas
114) Denver Broncos - Jordan Smith, DE, UAB
115) Dallas Cowboys - Dayo Odeyingbo, DE, Vanderbilt
116) New York Giants - Quincy Roche, DE, Miami
117) San Francisco 49ers - Ambry Thomas, CB, Michigan
118) Los Angeles Chargers - Ar'Darius Washington, S, TCU
119) Seattle Seahawks (from Vikings) - Patrick Jones, DE, Pitt

120) Green Bay Packers (from Patriots via Bengals and Lions) - Milton Williams, DT, Louisiana Tech

With DL clearly being one of the worst position group on the Packers and also not a very deep or good draft class, I thought I double dip early and select another one which I think was worth the spot and the uptrade (142 and 178 for 120). Williams is a clear 5T and could be in Rotation early on. The RAS of 9.98 was too sexy to pass at that spot ;)

121) Las Vegas Raiders - Trey Sermon, RB, Ohio State
122) Cincinnati Bengals (from Cardinals via Texans via Patriots) - Tommy Togiai, DT, Ohio State
123) Philadelphia Eagles (from Miami) - Tyree Gillespie, S, Missouri
124) Washington Football Team - Tutu Atwell, WR, Louisville
125) Minnesota Vikings (from Chicago Bears) - Cade Johnson, WR, South Dakota State
126) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Tennessee Titans) - Kenny Yeboah, TE, Ole Miss
127) Indianapolis Colts - Cameron Sample, DE, Tulane
128) Pittsburgh Steelers - Brandon Smith, WR, Iowa
129) Minnesota Vikings (from Seahawks) - Shakur Brown, CB, Michigan State
130) Jacksonville Jaguars (from Los Angeles Rams) - Jalen Twyman, DT, Pittsburgh
131) Baltimore Ravens - Rashad Weaver, DE, Pittsburgh
132) Cleveland Browns - D'Ante Smith, OT, East Carolina
133) New Orleans Saints - Seth Williams, WR, Auburn
134) Minnesota Vikings (from Buffalo Bills; conditional) - Divine Deablo, S, Virginia Tech
135) Carolina Panthers (from Green Bay Packers) - Dylan Moses, LB, Alabama
136) Kansas City Chiefs - Josh Palmer, WR, Tennessee
137) Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Royce Newman, OG, Ole Miss
138) Cincinnati Bengals (from Dallas Cowboys, compensatory selection) - Pete Werner, LB, Ohio State
139) New England Patriots (compensatory selection) - Shi Smith, WR, South Carolina
140) Baltimore Ravens (from Steelers, compensatory selection) - Chris Rumph, DE, Duke
141) Los Angeles Rams (compensatory selection) - Ian Book, QB, Notre Dame
142) Detroit Lions ( from Packers, compensatory selection) - Janarius Robinson, DE, Florida State
143) Minnesota Vikings (compensatory selection) - Marlon Tuipulotu, DT, USC

Overall I was pretty OK with how it went, I could address most of the needs on the roster without overpaying. Are you happy with my work and outcome or am I fired? 😛

Pretty good!  Hit the sore spots.  I don't really like Samuel very much (he is not Jaire) so you went CB, OT and DT.  With the depth at CB I tend to think more OT, DT and then CB.  Increases our chance of a OT playing right away. In my scenario it would have been Radunz or Little, 2nd round DT Nixon (he's got a little more length than McNeill) then I would take my man crush so far CB Adebo.

But that is really nitpicking, great job on moving around and trading down and then back up. I wouldn't have the heart to draft St.Brown and push his brother off the roster.

Really appreciate your input, Dubz41, thanks for that. Jaire is one of the best CBs in the league, so don't expect a 2nd rounder in any draft just to be as good as him. But if he can be as good as his dad or even better, that would give the Packers a true shutdown corner duo. Don't get me wrong, I really like Radunz, but Samuel was the better OVR player on my board, so I went with him, not expecting the OT run right after. If Radunz fell into the 50s, I'd definitely made a move up for him, but he was just picked right after me. With Little I'm a bit scared, 2 years without football is a red flag for me. I also really like Nixon, not only because of his skill set, but also he is an Iowa alumni. The Packers had great success "lately" with DLs from Iowa. Mike Daniels and one of my all-time favorite Packers, Aaron Kampman. I just didn't like the rest of the OL group to pass on Hudson in the 2nd and at 73 Nixon was gone.

I also wasn't picking Amon-Ra to kick his brother out, EQ is in trouble with any WR drafted and I'm sure the Packers will do exactly that at some point in the Draft. He just has to stay healthy and show up, then he will still have a shot to be on the Packers Squad.

Nothing real crazy here.  The trade is probably a bit optimistic for my liking.  Probably need to cough up another 4th round pick to get that deal done.  Historically speaking, the cost of moving from the early part of the second round into the late first round is usually a ~4th round pick.  It comes up a bit short in terms of value, so the Panthers probably need to add something else.  Either add a 5th round pick or a future 3rd round pick would make sense, but Carolina already dealt their SRP next year so they're probably done dealing from future picks.

As for the draft, nothing crazy here.  Solid picks all the way around.

I like the draft, but if I am sitting in my chair and Rousseau is available at 29 and we trade out I probably smash my computer. And I don't even love Rousseau

I looked at how the draft fell, was upset when we traded out of the first with Bateman on the board.  So...not thrilled with the trade initially.

But, by trading back, you got a "starter".  Top 3 corner who is going to see snaps.  And I am a fan of Samuel Jr.   And I think you took him in the right spot.

I like Hudson as a project.  That's fine.

McNeil is a riser.  I know nothing about him except his write ups.  Which is exactly as you put him.

Milton is intriguing.

I also would have been fine with Radunz with the first pick and  Robinson with the second pick.

I traditionally like the trade down theory.  In this case, though, I'd love it if you re-ran your mock and took Bateman in the first.  Just to see how it shook out.

Why would you be upset? Rousseau has only one year of tape, that looks intriguing though. But the Packers are pretty much set on EDGEs, so I surely didn't want another luxury pick, especially in the first round. The 2020 Draft was more than enough luxury for a team that is in a win now mode and has other glaring holes.

Bateman was the only guy of the 10 Players that I missed because of the downtrade, that was very high on my board. So he was in consideration. I know it sounds stupid, but the Packers just don't draft WRs in Round 1. The last one I remember was Javon Walker. And given the track record they have with 2nd and 3rd rounders (Jennings, Jones, Nelson, cobb, Adams) I'm fine with that. So that played to my mind when passing on Bateman.

Oh, I get it.  And I'm not disagreeing with it.

I just think that Bateman as a prospect at WR is greater than Samuel Jr the prospect at cornerback.

We could use a corner more, but Bateman is a clear tier ahead of Samuel Jr for me.  As a prospect.

The issue with going WR in the first is how it affects the rest of the draft.  I've got zero issue taking OT/CB with the first two picks, that makes the draft easier to manage.  When that doesn't happen?  That's when everything else turns to crap whenever I run a mock simulator.

Same thing if Barmore is there at DL.  You have to take him.  Then you have to have a strategy on how to get a good corner/OT with the next two picks.  And that may mean trading.  Then you are chasing WR.

Draft is tough when you don't do CB/OT with the first two.

But look at those, take your trade away.  Take Bateman.  Would you stand with your picks, or would they change and how?

Albert Einstein : “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”

Every year Packer fans make their draft shopping list of positions of 'need' and than are disappointed when the Packers don't draft from the position that everyone knows they 'need.' Every year some different positions, but always a shopping list. Last year it was WR and DL were positions that the Packers just could not live without, Rodgers has no weapons and the DL just got run over in the NFCC game against the 49er's. Yet the Packers didn't draft a player from either position. Hmm. For how many years have people been claiming that they need to invest high on a ILB, it never happens. Every year there will be those that work in front offices that point blank tell everyone that they will draft the BPA, yet it seldom sinks in. The Packers drafted Gary fresh off of spending over 100M on the Smith brothers in FA, draft a QB with a 1st ballot HOFer with 4 years left on his contract and draft a RB with a Pro Bowl RB and solid backup already cemented in place. No 'needs' there and all with 1st or 2nd round picks. Is it possible that the Packers really do follow their board and draft BPA regardless of position? Some may reach that conclusion, but first they will need to throw away the shopping list.

Edge is a premium position. We will move on from Preston after this year I'm sure and having 3 solid players there would be great. Getting a player with his upside that late for me is a no brainer.

He would also see playing time as a rookie - Z can play inside on passing downs, and Preston can play corner

If Bateman was the pick, I'd have a hard time on passing on Stokes at #62. But I also like the 3rd round graded players so there would be a couple of trade scenarios which I would have considered to get picks in the 3rd and early 4th. I cannot say with what I'd ended up, I usually like to react on how the board falls. But I'm quite sure that I didn't take 2 DLs in the first 4 rounds as only the downtrade brought me in the position to get both McNeill and Williams. If I had my original 4th, Dylan Moses would have been very high on my board for that.
