NFL Snooze News: Volume Four, Por Favor

The Raiders only wanted to give Kingsbury a two-year contract and it’s likely he was able to get a third year from the Commanders. Giving a coordinator with Kingsbury’s experience a three-year contract isn’t out of the ordinary so it’s odd that Las Vegas wasn’t willing to give him that commitment unless they weren’t totally sold on him in the first place.

The Raiders quickly pivoted and decided to hire former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy. While many fans bemoaned the hiring, Albert Breer is a fan of the decision.

Breer: “But I do think Luke Getsy is a very solid hire. In his two years calling the Bears offense, he retrofitted what he did to bring Justin Fields in, weathered injuries to Fields (one that forced undrafted free-agent Tyson Bagent onto the field), helped to fix the offensive line and got plenty out of players like DJ Moore and Cole Kmet. Getsy’s respected by his peers, and his experience working with quarterbacks at opposite ends of their careers (Fields and Aaron Rodgers) should serve him well in helping the Raiders address the position in 2024.”

i can sort of remember Harbaugh being a qb with the Bears. he was sort of a mid level, serviceable player, but never reached great heights.

argued with Ditka too, but who didn't?

Harbaugh was a gutty backup QB (kind of like his coaching style too).  His glory moment came with the Colts vs. the Steelers.  While he didn't play with as many teams, he was that era's Ryan Fitzpatrick/Gardner Minshew.

New Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen held his first press conference since taking the job on Tuesday and quarterback Baker Mayfield was a chief topic.

Coen worked with Mayfield when both men were with the Rams in 2022 and he said that it was fun to think about getting a chance “to coach a guy that’s as competitive as he is, that has that moxie” again. In order for that to happen, Mayfield will have to agree to a new deal with the Buccaneers and Coen said he’s hopeful that things come to his desired resolution.

Mayfield said he wanted to know who the Bucs would hire as their offensive coordinator before opening contract talks and he endorsed Coen before he was officially hired in Tampa. That would seem to bode well for an eventual agreement on a new deal, but there’s still work to do before anything reaches the finish line.

That's 3 of the 5...I'm not a huge fan of Hester making it in because of his inability to contribute at anything other than returning.  If they're going to do that, then Steve Tasker should have been in a decade ago.

I have no problem with Hester getting in. He’s the best return man in the sports history.

I wouldn't have as much of a problem if guys like Tasker had been put in first...and since it's been so difficult to get punters and kickers in.  But, I don't like this, especially since he basically contributed nothing as a WR (should have stayed at CB).

If Hester is in, then there should be more "specialists" to go in.

Me...I would go back to the days when players played both ways, wore leather helmets, and didn't have face masks!  Back in the days when linemen had the chance to be considered the best player on the team and there are more linemen in the hall!!!  Just kidding...I am not the old!!! Although...more linemen should be in the Hall!

What did Tasker do to be worthy of the Hall of Fame?

Most notably was a 5-time First Team All-Pro (and 7-time Pro Bowler) and only special teamer to ever win Pro Bowl MVP (when that actually mattered more).  He had 204 special teams tackles (in 169 games) and blocked 7 punts.  And rules had to be changed regarding special teams because of him.  He had more impact on Special Teams play than any player in the history of the NFL.

And for all the talk about contributing on offense, for as long as Hester contributed on offense, they were comparatively the same...Hester had 5 times as many opportunities, so he had about 5 times as many receptions...but only had 16 TDs receiving while Tasker had 9.

I think Hester deserves to get in ultimately, but it's a disservice to put him in before Tasker was.

I've said it before: Hester deserved to be a first ballot guy. He is simply the best to ever do it. And that means something. He was must-see on kickoffs. He changed what teams did. He was a weapon. He didn't even have to touch the ball to change field position because teams would rather kick it short than give him a chance to take it all the way.

My only complaint is that the rules were changed before Coradarrelle Patterson had a chance to surpass him.

Patterson did surpass him. Patterson has 9 kick return touchdowns, while Hester only had 5. Heck, just with the Vikings, both Patterson and Harvin matched Hester’s 5.

I meant all returns. Hester had 20 total. Granted, Patterson didn’t return punts, but he might have gotten to 20 kick returns if they didn’t neuter the kickoff.
