Would also like to hear your thoughts on Cory Trice.

I am not concerned with David Bell's speed/separation.  The dude has outstanding hands and route running ability.  Sure is not a blur athletically but not really that big of a deal.  He has clearly been the most productive WR on their team the past two years, a team with Rondale Moore on it, sure Moore got hurt the past two years but still staying healthy and producing does mean something.  Bell is easily one of the top receiver prospects in the 2022 draft especially with his ability to go up and get the football on contested catches.

Cory Trice I like a lot, needs to produce more and be more impactful in terms of getting his hands on the football, but hard not to like a massive corner like him with long arm that plays with good technique and has solid tackling ability.   Could have a breakout year for them and is one of the best corners in the Big Ten potentially.

@MikeT14

So is Ashby returning to Virginia Tech or not?  This article here says he went undrafted in the 2021 draft which I knew about, but then later speaks of him as one of the best "old school" ILBs in the country in 2021 along with Payton Wilson and Landman.  So is he back at VT for another year or not?  Maybe they allowed the guys who went undrafted to and not signed as a UDFA to return to school?

I don't think so. He should be done.

That is what I thought but that part in the article that includes him as one of the better old school linebackers in the nation for 2021 makes me maybe think he is back?  Odd he was be included in that but maybe it was a typo.

Yeah, I'm thinking it's just an error. I don't see anything on my Hokie website/forum about him being back.

2022 NFL Draft

Very early look at the guys potentially for the 2022 NFL Draft.  Tons are going to change as I go over the list more and move guys around.  The list is based off guys I have watched and ranked during the season last year not off some random internet list or high school ranking.  It was harder this year having to go back and see what RS SR or SR returned to school with the extra year of eligibility.

Tons of guys who were given another shot at college football with a 5th sometimes 6th year or more of eligibility because of the pandemic, here are the guys I have in that boat.  The bottom 15 or so I still had as prospects in the current draft for 2021 and did not know they returned to school.  One has to literally look up almost every single guy and try to find out if he came back or not.  This just includes NFL prospects though and did not include just anyone that returned, sure I have forgot and missed some, a few transferred to another school like Seth Green but most did not transfer with the extra year.

I need to watch him more, have not seen him play much and honestly have not noticed him much when watching TCU.  On the stat line 13 passes deflected is great but many 5-9 170 nickel corners get those type of PD numbers, Rashard Fant is one.  Had 22 and 17 in back to back years and obviously never caught onto the NFL.  Having the Tomlinson name sure helps granted.  Washington on TCU was a hyped up DB this past year and didn't he got undrafted, still could turn out though will see and should be great for the Ravens.

Nook Bradford is one to watch on TCU and will see how Ochaun Mathis does, he has some pass rush potential but I need to watch him more, same with Bethley who is an athletic DT who can get after the QB also.

I wasn't big on washington, and he shouldn't be a safety at 5'8. That's nickel CB Size. I have seen Tomlinson going in rd 2 of plenty of mocks

"With spring practice approaching, more than 1,000 scholarship players are expected to take advantage of the NCAA’s eligibility mulligan, according to an Associated Press review of rosters provided by 129 schools."

“Everybody’s like eight to 10 (percentage points) higher because they’re returning more seniors, because all the seniors got a chance at an extra year of eligibility,” Connelly said.

Normally, the top teams in returning production will be around 87%, Connelly said. Currently, three teams are expected to have more than 90% of their production from 2020 back in 2021.

Leading the way was Louisiana-Lafayette at 96%. UCLA and Miami were both at 91%. Lafayette (Levi Lewis) and Miami (D’Eriq King) each has a quarterback who will be a super senior.

As of this past weekend, Illinois expects to have 17 scholarship super seniors, the most of any Power Five school."

Few other players I came across who are returning to school as RS SR players.

*DeAngelo Malone Western Kentucky RS SR OLB/DE:  I need to watch him more but has some athletic explosion to him, very quick off the ball and agile for a edge rusher.  Does not hold the point of attack very well and is not super strong, but as a 3/4 OLB he has some skills and will see how he looks with another year.  Has been wildly productive as a pass rusher over the past few seasons.

*Coby Bryant Cincinnati RS SR CB: Looks like he has some really good reaction skills, comes up aggressively when tackling, has good athletic ability and knows how to get his hands on the football in coverage.  Had decent length at corner and will be one to watch, gets a lot of action but did very well at times last year.

*Corey Bethley TCU RS SR DT: Splashed big time as a younger player, athletic DT who can get pressure on the passer and get home.  Will be curious how he does with another year, athletically he is up there and might be a late round draft pick with a solid season.

*Emeka Emezie NC State RS SR WR: Did not know he was returning, physically he is a well built WR, good athlete for his size and can make some solid contested catches at times.  Physically there is a lot to like about him because he is such a big athletic dude.

*Malcolm Rodriguez Ok State RS SR ILB:  Thought he was out for the draft, good to see him get another year but last few seasons he was all over the field making plays.  Very active and athletic linebacker, could be a mid to late round pick with a solid season.

@MSURacerDT55 Myjai Sanders, after watching him more it is really hard not to like him.  Still need to dig into him more though but hard to not potentially see a 1st rounder with him, moved him up into that spot because the pass rusher class is nothing great.  Compare Sanders to say Hutchinson on Michigan who is big and talented but not nearly as productive as Sanders was or as impactful.  If Sanders progresses like he should this year and takes it to another level, he should no question be a 1st round pick.  But who knows, will have to watch that Georgia bowl game some more, was the only real solid competition for them last year, sure Tulsa is ok and UCF but not super high level.  Those two safeties gone could be a massive loss for that defense and might be hard to overcome.

Bob Sanders much?  Earl Thomas is not a huge guy either at safety.  Will have to watch Tomlinson some more but again 5-9 CBs being that productive in the slot getting their hands on the football is not rare in college.

Is a bull tackling though, that is impressive.  Really fights out there and is super aggressive but also struggles because of that height at times.  Still goes after it, missed multiple INTs looks like but at least he got his hands on the ball.  Is impressive he is an outside corner it looks like, would be curious how he would look in the slot.  Impressive he holds up outside as much as he did at that size.  Looks like he is one to watch for sure.

I do not follow PFF that much, but apparently 2nd graded CB.  They also had him 1st team All American I assume based on just his grade.  Surtain was targeted just 48 times all season and played more games....

"rated by Pro Football Focus as the nation's highest-graded cornerback in coverage at 89.1, allowing just 12 catches on 45 targets over the final nine games of the season ... his 13 pass breakups led the Big 12 and were second nationally ... started all 10 games .."

Did some more looking around at safeties currently in the NFL that are short, a few of them and the top three play at a very high level.   All can play a little slot and Joyner does it a lot and is not always a safety but still.  Not to mention Winfield Jr who was a huge part in the Bucs Super Bowl run last year.

Antoine Winfield Jr 5-9
Tyrann Mathieu 5-9
Quandre Diggs 5-9
LaMarcus Joyner 5-8
Ugo Amadi 5-9

I thought Byron Murphy Jr  was 5-9 ish and would have been the highest drafted CB from this list but he is 5-11.  A lot of those guys were UDFAs or later round picks.  Some fine players sure but not many high draft picks at that height.   Loved DJ Reed coming out of college, he was actually drafted but thought he should have been higher.   Shelley was solid who had some ability and Robertson was a ballhawk and Hilton who is tough as can be not to mention Robey-Coleman who was a big time playmaker and has had a solid pro career.

Nickell Robey-Coleman 5-8
Avonte Maddox 5-9
Mike Hilton 5-9
Duke Shelley 5-9
Amik Robertson 5-8
Darious Williams 5-9
K'Waun Williams 5-9
DJ Reed Jr 5-9
Tavon Young 5-9

Only went to current guys, Captain Munnerlyn is another smaller 5-9 corner that comes to mind, loved him on South Carolina thought he should have been drafted higher but had a long solid career.  He was a 7th round pick.  So for Tre'Vius he would be one of the first 5-9 corners to be picked high in the draft honestly if it happens.  Will be interesting how he does this year.  He has a chance no question in the pass happy NFL with the rules how they are, there is a place for smaller guys who can change direction in coverage and be versatile and tough out there.

Jequez Ezzard WR SR Sam Houston State:  I assume he will be back at Sam Houston State next year with another year granted potentially.  Is apparently a senior now but will see what happens, what could maybe go into the Supplemental draft this year but not totally sure on that.  Still that dude has some jets, great separation ability and quick feet, could be a fine return man in the NFL and big play WR threat with his solid route running and good hands.  Big time weapon and is a massive reason why Sam Houston State won the National Championship.

Isaiah Davis RB FR South Dakota State: Need to watch him more but had some great runs in that National title game.  Big back with speed and power, will be one to watch in the future no doubt about it.

Don Gardner CB RS SR South Dakota State: Is kind of a long shot and did get beat a few times by Ezzard but held up other times.  Has great length for a corner which is interesting and good size.  Assuming he returns to school for another year but who knows.  Might be a boarderline prospect as a CB because of his length and coverage skills.

Note: J'Bore Gibbs RS SOPH QB South Dakota State: Was surprised he did not get into the game even when the starter for South Dakota State got hurt, another QB came in.  So that means he is 3rd on the depth chart.  Dude looked legit a few years back with some talented receivers to throw to, had a great game against Minnesota on the road if I remember.  Big strong kid, curious where he is at in his development or if he transferred, could not find any information on that but is curious why he did not go in as the 2nd QB.

I need to watch them more but Nevada has some very interesting prospects offensively on their team.

Carson Strong RS JR QB Nevada:
Dude has a very strong throwing arm.  Love his overall pocket mechanics, really is accurate on his deep throws and stood out a lot last year and if he takes it to another level this season could easily see him as a early 2nd or late 1st round pick.  I have him behind Purdy right now but just slightly, if Purdy does not have a strong year Carson Strong could easily be above him.  I need to watch him more no question about it, very promising looking player.

Romeo Doubs SR WR Nevada:
Impressive receiver, but needs to handle expectations and a crowd environment unlike most of last year.  But is an impressive deep threat and could be a 2nd round pick next year if not higher.  Love that deep speed and if he runs well and continues to progress there is a lot to like about that type of big play ability.  But he should take note of Tamarrion Terry last year, a big time deep threat and big fast WR who had a great season previously and a potential 1st round pick, did not play well at all in a new system with a new QB, left the team and was a UDFA last year.  So will see if Doubs can continue to progress.

Cole Turner SR TE Nevada:
Really like his size at TE and he is a good matchup in the passing game.  Big tall kid who can make plays downfield and is athletic catching the football.  Could be a mid round draft pick possibly with another good year.
