College Football Coaching Carousel

Where was the outrage when Butch Jones called one of his players "a traitor" for helping a young woman allegedly raped by 2 players?

Where was the outrage during the Manning allegations?

If there was consistency here at Tennessee, then I'd obviously understand/back them. If what G.S. did at Penn State was true, then that's repugnant. However, I feel like most don't want a guy who isn't considered to be an "elite hire" like Chip Kelly at UCLA.

They don't want top flight CFB coaches, they want John Gruden.

All jokes aside, that is their problem. They truly believe they are a head coach away from immediate Top 5 status. And they refuse to see otherwise.

Alabama in 2006 was in the same position.  They had a decade of irrelevance.  They were losing annually to Tennessee and just about every other good SEC team.  And they changed it all with the hire of Nick Saban.  That took them  from mediocrity to top 5 in the nation in just one season.  So its not that crazy of a notion to believe they are just a head coach away from Top 5 status. Just look at everything they have going for them:

(1) Tennessee has as good a facilities and stadium as any team in the nation.

(2) Tennessee now has a strong instate recruiting base.  This used to be a weakness and something fans from other schools could point to as to why Tennessee should no longer be considered a top program.  However, in recent years thanks to an explosion in population in the Nashville/middle Tennessee area, Tennessee has actually become a hotbed for college football recruiting.  In the class of 2019 (the class that the next head coach would be recruiting), Tennessee currently has more composite 4-star prospects (according to 247sports) than all but 4 states in the country (Florida, Texas, Georgia, and California).  Yes you read that right.  The state of Tennessee is now producing more talent than Louisiana.  In addition to the growth in instate talent, the city of Knoxville is also located less than a 3 hour car ride from metro Atlanta and metro Charlotte (two huge out of state recruiting hotbeds).

(3) And finally, MONEY.  Tennessee football generates more revenue than Alabama or any other school in the SEC.  When you are making that much money, that means you can pay top dollar for a head coach and his assistants.  Tennessee has no excuse to spend half of what Alabama does on football when it makes more money in terms of revenue.

All in all, if you look at the most important factors when it comes to determining how good a college football job is like FACILITIES, INSTATE RECRUITING BASE, and MONEY, you could make a strong argument that Tennessee is a top 5-10 job in college football.  There is honestly no excuse for Tennessee to be as bad as they have been in recent years.  Alabama got a head coach in 2007 that turned around a once proud program that had fallen on a decade of irrelevance.  We'll see if Tennessee can get the man who can lead them back in 2017.

We don't. Signed an MOU, but that was it according to Chris Low.

What a mess. Rumors now were that Mullen was #1 and Schiano #2. When Chip and Frost fell through for UF, Currie panicked and went with Schiano.

Actually reports are coming out now that Schiano was the top target from the beginning.  Remember, Jimmy Haslam (owner of the Cleveland Browns) is the top booster at Tennessee and the man that hired John Currie.  And back in 2014, after Schiano was fired by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there were reports that Haslam wanted to hire Greg Schiano to coach the Browns.  However, the Browns GM and others in management protested the decision.  Apparently Haslam has always been infatuated with Schiano and he was the main driving force of his hire this year at Tennessee.

As crazy as it is to believe, Greg Schiano might have been the #1 target from the start.

Welcome to the world of Jimmy Haslam run teams.

Did you know Josh Dobbs majored in aerospace engineering? Bet he rooms with Ryan Fitzpatrick. Who incidentally went to Harvard.

And when NFL defenses start drawing formulas and diagrams with physics based problems everywhere, he's the guy that I want in at QB.
