Lancaster has beaten us 3 consecutive games now. Payback time.

Offense

We are bringing a run first approach for most of the game. This is a defense that matches up well with us and Julio Jones is out, meaning we have one less guy to take attention away from Tim Patrick and open up the Rondale Moore deep threat. Instead, we’re trusting Dalvin Cook and opening up opportunities to get our offense in matchups that can get us positive yardage consistently. The biggest goal for our offense is not turning the ball over and keeping our offense ahead of downs and distance. We will take chance after Jalen Ramsey because we think Justin Jefferson is that good. He’s also our best weapon to get yards so we have zero hesitation to get him involved for 10-15 routes. We’ll also run screens for Jefferson get him some quick receptions. Our 2nd receiver of usage will be Tim Patrick as he’s been useful in all areas of the field. Patrick has also produced with a limited target share but we will up the responsibility for him this week. Cook will be our 3rd target in the receiving game. We will go after Kevin King on more then a few looks, zone or man coverage

Defense

We are banking on our defense here. Expect lots blitzes to Jared Goff with multiple A/B gap blitzes and initial formation switches pre snap before moving to new alignments. Our zero gap looks are based on early downs and we will blitz on 3rd downs. In coverage, expect plenty of man coverage looks, with Shaq Griffin on his guy in single coverage and the other CB (Mills) getting the safety shaded toward his side. Derwin James will lineup at safety on early downs and move to LB/Edge on passing downs so maximize his skill set.

Motivation:

Our players believe we can still make the playoffs and know that we’re still in a good position to do so. We know if we win another game or two we’re likely to make the playoffs. We know that this Cuba team is banged up right now and this is a real chance for us to win and put ourselves more in the driver’s seat for a potential playoff spot. We’re coming out hungry and wanting to win as many are counting our team out.

Lancaster Offensive Strategy:

This week we’re going to continue with the strategy we’ve used in recent weeks. We want to play it safe in the passing game and eat up clock using the running game. We think with Cuba being banged up the way they are right now we can pull the upset by limiting mistakes and just playing to our strengths. We’re going to bang it up the middle and ground and pound our way to a win here.

Our main goal is to attack on the ground. Fournette pulls the start again with the breakdown being roughly Fournette (70%), Dillon (20%), and Bernard (10%). We want to attack between the tackles this week. We think that’s where we’ll have the most success attacking the Cuba DL. We have our best offensive lineman on the interior too with Quenton Nelson and Robert Hunt so we want to run behind them as much as possible. We expect to break off a few nice runs but for the most part we’re content with slowly moving the chains and eating up the clock. With Bernard we’ll look to get some outside runs with our guards pulling as well. Hayden Hurst will be used as a blocker on the majority of plays as a run and pass blocker. We want to run early and often with a 60% run to 40% pass ratio throughout the game. Our primary goal is eating up clock and moving the chains.

In the passing game we want to be safe and limit possibilities for turnovers. We want to work out a lot of short passes and screens. We want to hit screens to Diontae Johnson where he has success getting a few blockers in front of him and getting the ball in space to where he can use his speed and elusiveness to make big gains. Giovani Bernard will get some screens thrown his way as well when he’s in. Other than that we’re going to keep it simple with some rub routes where we can use Michael Pittman’s size to help Johnson or Watkins get some separation and then use their speed to get downfield. We’ll also use Pittman’s size on some intermediate and deep routes where he can use his contested catching ability against some smaller corners. Watkins will get a couple of deep shots as well to keep the secondary honest. Hurst will be used in the short and intermediate parts of the field when he’s not blocking. The Cuba CB group is not the strongest so despite our QB situation we think we can consistently be safe and smart and work our way down the field bit by bit.

Lancaster Defensive Strategy:

This week Cuba is a bit banged up on offense and that’s how we think our defense can do enough to win this one. With guys like Julio Jones and Rob Gronkowski out, we think they have a limited amount of BDL level playmakers available to them. We want to take away Dalvin Cook and Justin Jefferson, their main weapons, and force them to win with other people on their roster. And of course we want to limit the time the Cuba offense has on the field with our slow and methodical offensive gameplan.

One of the keys to our defensive gameplan is neutralizing Justin Jefferson. Jalen Ramsey is fully healthy and we’ll have him covering Justin Jefferson all game long. Jefferson might still get some wins but we are going to count on Ramsey to effectively take him out of the game for the most part. With Julio Jones out, the only other healthy wide receivers Cuba has are Tim Patrick and Rondale Moore. Tim Patrick will be covered by Kevin King and Kindle Vildor will cover Rondale Moore. Gronk is out so Alie-Cox will likely be starting at TE. He’ll be covered by Vonn Bell, who will be playing in the box. Logan Ryan will be playing a deep zone on whatever side Rondale Moore is on. Fred Warner will cover Dalvin Cook out of the backfield and in general spy him. Bobby Wagner will play multiple roles, playing a shallow zone or blitzing throughout the game.

Our second goal besides neutralizing Justin Jefferson is to neutralize Dalvin Cook. This starts with Fred Warner spying him at all times as stated in the previous section. Besides that we’ll have Bobby Wagner blitzing throughout the game on occasion and playing in the box otherwise. Vonn Bell will also be playing up in the box, giving us 7 guys in the box minimum at all times. We also think our defensive line can have success against the interior Cuba offensive line. With Elgton Jenkins likely forced to play at LT again, Billy and Trai Turner will be starting at guard. We think our combo of Kenny Clark and Justin Madubuike can have success against them, but we also want to run some stunts where Watt or Bosa can go against them and get pressure up the middle. We’re going to have our DL mostly play to stop the run this week to limit Dalvin Cook, although we still expect them to win in the pass rush as well.

2 really good gameplans and overall rosters but man, I just have no faith in Goff to have consistent success against a good defense. Gotta go Cuba here 21-19

Good thing we're barely asking him to do anything.

Also, side note if it matters for anyone, two people on Cuba's bench are also in his starting lineup.

I will just say in terms of motivation, clearly Cuba lacked it this weekend. Their lineup had errors, their word count was shorter. Lancaster came hungry and the Smugglers came out flat. Enough said. Lancaster is fighting for their damn playoff life here.

We are also fighting for our playoff life.

Two offenses looking to run the ball. Two defenses who are well rounded. Cuba with the better receiving options IMO, Lancaster with the better secondary IMO. When you get these stalemates, it has to come down to the QB who is going to be able to make a play late in the game. I'm sure I'll get blasted since it's now not ok to have it come down to the QB when everything is equal but I want Derek Carr late in a game over Goff. Even with Lancaster not asking him to do much, at some point he's going to need to be the guy who makes a difference.
