Packers LB Whitney Mercilus tears biceps; Out for season

Might not mean much for Green Bay, but sad to see Whitney go down like this. His talent has vanished and he really didn't do much outside of being a liability in coverage, pass rushing and against the run - but he was a really good guy off the field.

Oh well, good luck to him whatever he does next.

yeah, he was actually play quite well. This is an unfortunate loss. He was playing ~40-50% of the defensive snaps and was grading out among the top 5 guys on defense for a few games. Bit of a bummer, he was great depth.

We are still down Zadarius Smith and Rashan Gary suffered an elbow dislocation this week, too. We did get Preston Smith back this week, but OLB depth is an issue unfortunately.

Did he fall off really fast? I remember him being a potentially big get via trade or free agency within just the past couple seasons.

Yeah - after he tore his peck in 2017, he never recovered, couldn't disengage and pursue the QB. He lacked power at the POA even before the injury, so afterwards he'd get washed out pretty routinely.

I wonder if they go back to Jaylon Smith

We will probably bring back La'Darius Hamilton, who was just released.  He had some PT, but Mercilus was playing well enough that we didn't need to keep 5 edge guys.  So, naturally, the same week Mercilus tears his biceps and Rashan Gary hyperextends his elbow.

This is a pleasant surprise - even in the "good days" in Houston, Mercilius was a liability.

Makes the loss moreso bad, IMO. Mercilius having a resurgence in GB is what that guy deserved.
