Raiders 2018 Free Agency Thread

I know this should go in the draft thread, but I’m warming up to hurst as well. Guy is always in the backfield. You cant coach that kind of quickness and low center of gravity.

Hercules from LSU is another guy with crazy quickness and the ability to stay low and make plays. He would def need to move to the edge and prob would be a pass rush specialist until he gets bigger.

I see a lot of people on the Hurst, Smith and Edmunds camp.  I'll be honest, they aren't nearly as high on my list.  All are going to be really good football players,  but I just don't see them at 9/10 despite all the positive hype.  I know they are well liked here, so I'm sure this is going to be a super unpopular take...

Hurst is probably my biggest concern. True, he has great burst and quickness.  However, he is undersized and that is going to be exposed in the NFL. He held is own in college fairly well, but lined up against larger, more technical inside linemen and the burst is going to be marginalized.  Double team him with the same O-linemen and he's going to struggle.  His pass rush moves are not nearly as great as I would like, he gets by a lot on athletic ability alone.  Fans hoping for Aaron Donald are going to be disappointed.  He is not Donald athletically or technically, comparing them is really unfair to Hurst.  Mid to late first, I like him a lot better.  Just not so much in the top 10.

Smith and Edmunds are both going to be GREAT linebackers.  My problem simply lies in positional value (which is super hypocritical, because my man crush is easily Quenton Nelson).  If we're moving to a 4-3, I just see better value in taking LVE in the second.  I know a lot of you have him as a first rounder, but I don't see how Smith, Edmunds, LVE, Evans and Jefferson (whom I don't care for) all are projected that high.  I actually think that one if not both of Smith and Edmunds fall to mid/late 1st as this has been a big trend for linebackers lately.

How is Hurst going to be double teamed with Mack on the DL and if we add a competent guy opposite Mack, Hurst is exactly what we need to put pressure up the middle, someone who can take advantage of Mack getting double teamed and if they choose to double team Hurst, Mack will feast. I'm tired of watching Mack get teamed up on and nobody can take advantage and beat a single blocker. Hurst will all day.

- I'm told defensive lineman Malik Jackson can be had in a trade this offseason. It's not because Jacksonville doesn't think he can play — he's a stud — but because the Jaguars can't afford him. Jackson is scheduled to make $13.5 million in 2018, and has an out with only a $4 million dead-cap hit in 2019. 49ers executive Adam Peters has a long history with Jackson from their Denver days.

Jackson would clearly help the 49ers' pass rush, and they could easily afford the contract. Would they be willing to give up a fourth-round pick, let's say for argument's sake, for a guy they might only have for one season?

The Raiders, on the other hand, would be hard-pressed to trade for that contract — with the Mack deal looming and the Irvin situation also bubbling. It would be a little more difficult for them without releasing multiple players. I think both teams will show a lot of interest in Jackson, though, because he is that good.

Interesting. 1 year rental on a solid player. Maybe sign and restructure if he's open. Would fix the interior pass rush problem.

I'm told the new Raiders staff likes tight end Jared Cook but doesn't love his $5 million salary next season. The draft is loaded with pass-catching tight ends, guys who would cost a quarter of Cook's price. Cook's value on the open market will not be helped by the depth of the draft class, so I wouldn't expect much in return. It would basically be a salary dump. Look for both guys to be on the trade block this next month.

From the same article. Seen this rumor around a lot recently.

What a story. Really shows the person Tom Cable is. If Dion Jordan doesn't come to Oakland after reading this it'd be shocking lol.

I would love it 4 sacks in 5 games last year and got his life turned around, could be a long term partner for Mack on  a pretty cheap contract.

Just realized I put this in the free-agency discussion, sorry all.   As to Hurst, interior D-linmen get doubled all the time on any inside run.  No need to double Mack.  In pass pro, sure he'd could be a good interior pass rusher.  However, even in this I'm worried.  I didn't see great hand usage or much in the form of pass-rush moves period.  He's not that technical honestly and gets by on athletic ability. If his burst is neutralized against the NFL's bigger, faster, more proficient O-linemen, he's in trouble.  I'm worried about him as the pick. As an undersized D-lineman, without great technique, he's a risk in the top 10.    I'm fine with him in the teens or late first (which by the way is where I think he should go), but as a top 10 pick... I just want more.  Different type lineman, but give me Vea if we go the DT route at the top of the draft.

They said that about Donald, sure it's the NFL but Hurst plays the run well some guy's just know how to use the tools they have and he should be paired with a big run stuffer next to him any way. and they blow up alot of run play with their quickness.

This is all anyone in the Hurst camp says. Hurst isn't remotely on the level of Aaron Donald. Not athletically, technically or just pure football IQ.

Top 20 pick, sure. Top 10. No thank you.

Let's just get them all out there for each draft prospect:

Undersized DT - Aaron Donald

White WR who plays slot - Wes Welker

WR with size who can't separate - Anquan Boldin

DT w/ pacific island decent - Haloti Ngata

Nobody is saying he is Aaron Donald, my point is all the question marks people had about Donald they are using about Hurst, they are different players, but Hurst will be good in his own right. I had no doubt about Donald and I have no doubt about Hurst regardless of what people think his limitations are.
