Two reasons: Brock Bowers and Arik Gilbert.

Arik Gilbert had 2 catches in 2022. He was supposed to be the 'other' TE but had some personal issues that kept him out of all but 3 games.

Allegedly he's looking to transfer again, but not sure if he did.

Yes, yes, game tape is #1 (and yes, Cone and Shuttle are important too), but some of the Combine 40 time results for top prospects that might fit the Packers have been a tad underwhelming, e.g., S Brian Branch running a 4.58, S Chris Smith a 4.62, WR Hyatt running at 4.4, WR Jordan Addison at 4.49.  TE Mayer ran ok at 4.7, but he looks a bit clumsy in drills.

Notable positives were S Sydney Brown at 4.47, TE Darnell Washington at 4.64, WR Jonathan Mingo at 4.46. TE Luke Musgrave had a sufficient time of 4.61, whilst TE Kincaid didn't run. If Kincaid runs under 4.6 at his Pro Day, I'm guessing he might be the first TE off the board. Catches everything.

Bummed WR prospects like Quinn Johnson and Jaxon Smith Njigba didn't run the 40 (though Nijigba did do well in the 3 Cone at 6.57). Have to wait for their Pro Day.

Washington didn't run the 3-cone but ran a 4.08 in the shuttle.  That's good enough for 3rd...among the entire Combine class so far.  The only ones faster have been WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba (3.93) and CB Julius Brents (4.05).  TE Zach Kuntz did it in 4.12, which is 4th among all participants so far.

Still want Sam LaPorta from TE U, but thought we could get him in round 3, but now not so sure. There are going to be good TE's available in round 3.

LaPorta looked great in drills today.  He might have been the smoothest mover out there which is saying something because this TE class is really good.

Also thought Josh Whyle looked damn good catching the ball.  Looks like a natural receiver.

If we could hurry up and get pick 13 so we can get Van Ness and Washington on the squad that would be great.

You know I wouldn’t mind us drafting Washington 15th overall.

It would make everyone shut up about drafting a TE top 24 for the next 20 years as he busts just like…

Pitts, Howard, Ebron, Eiffert, Fant, Gresham, Pettigrew, Davis, Winslow, Graham, Shockey, Engram and Franks.

That list by the way… Every TE drafted top 24 since the start of this current century.

But we’ll certainly get lucky. Mhmm. Sure. Thumbs up.

You forgot Hockenson.

Every Edge that Gute has drafted has had a vertical of at least 36. Van Ness had a 31. Is that a disqualifier, at least as far as being a 1st round pick?
