Hungary:

Offense:

We will come out w/ a fairly balanced gameplan this week. Due to their elite edge rush duo, this defense often faces offenses that are getting the ball out quick, so we'll do the opposite. We'll force their secondary to step up by attacking downfield right out of the gate. The key to this is buying Dak time of course, which we will accomplish in a vairety fo ways. Hockenson and Mixon will rotate between pass block duties, occasionally both blocking if Dak reads a blitz. We'll always want Mixon on Garrett's side so he can at least chip him if he's not staying back to block. That will only be so effective, so ultimately we hope to slow these edge rushers by making them think more. We'll look to get Daks legs involved early and often to add an extra dimension to our offense in the form of read options and designed runs. This will test the discipline of their edge rushers. We'll employ RPOs for the same reason, freezing the unblocked edge defender and having Dak take what the D gives him. Play action and bootlegs will be employed as well to keep Dak on the move and in control. DK and Lockett vs IC's corners is a matchup we like, and if Dak can get the time we think we can get in a few big shots early.

Once the coverage softens up, we can get to work on the quick hitters to Hockenson, Thielen as well as our RBs in the flat. There will be occasional 21 personnel employed, usually in pass situations where the RB on Myles side will be staying back to block. Mixon will be seeing 70+% of snaps today as he has the hot hand. Expect 20+ touches for him. We'll be without Peat this week but our iOL is still fairly strong and we trust they will spring Mixon to the 2nd level a handful of times, where he will be able to display his ability.

Defense

We'll be playing out of our base 4-3 a ton today in an effort to slow down IC's rushing attack. They boast a strong OL and great pair of backs that will require our full attention to slow down. Our interior DL will be rotated heavily to keep them fresh as they will be the key to slowing down the run by plugging up the middle. Our edge defenders will have to be patient as we want them to focus on controlling their gap, not allowing runs to easily get bounced to the outside. On pass plays this will work in our favor to keep Rodgers in the pocket, as our D will not be able to handle broken plays off scrambles.

We'll mainly be relying on a Tampa 2 look this week where Wilson takes the deep middle whenever he reads pass. This keep things very simple for the other 10 guys, and will allow them to play more aggressive. Getting into a chess match w/ a QB as experienced as Rodgers is not worth the effort. He can know what we're doing, but with how much he has struggled that is not the death blow it was in years past. Our CBs will be up close while having help over the top, which lets them be bigger contributors in run support. Our hope is that they will plan to establish the run, and be unable to as they'll likely be losing the #s game, forcing them into 3rd & longs. It is in these situations that we will mix up looks, going into a 3-3-5 and playing both man and zone, with a conservative (25%) dose of blitzes.

Ivory Coast:

Motivation: Get back on track with defeating the Hungary Hippos.

Offense

Primary Formation: 21 personnel using two Tight Ends - Engram and Fant. We’ll sprinkle in some 22 personnel with Fournette coming onto the field. When running I-Formation we’ll have one of the tight ends function in the traditional fullback role, otherwise it’ll be the two running backs split in the backfield. There will be some trips sets with our receivers as well.

Running Game Focus:

Nick Chubb will get the bulk of the carries in this matchup.  We feel confident that our offensive line can manage the trenches while our tight ends, and additional running back can assist in blocking at the second level to keep the chains moving. We want to be balanced, and pound Chubb all day long.

  • Pound Chubb for 60 minutes

  • Off-tackle runs to overwhelm and seal the edges

  • Use two tight ends frequently for more bodies near the LOS

  • Set up deep shots with early runs and play action

Passing Game Focus:

This week we’ll get our backs involved in the passing game by running some screens, and play action passing to catch the defense over pursuing, or loading up the box against the rush.  We’ll take some shots deep on some outside streak routes as well, but our focus is to play smart football, don’t take any risk, and rely on the pass protection to buy Rodgers time to find his open man.

  • Utilize screens and play action pass

  • Stretch the field using some deep routes.

  • Get our Tight Ends involved in the passing game.

Defense

Defensive Formation:

The 4-2-5 alignment will be the primary alignment against three receiver sets. Payne and Tart will man the middle, with Garrett and Mack on the edges. Devin White and Bobby Okereke are the off-ball linebackers, with White being the primary linebacker stepping up to the line. Our trio of cornerbacks will be Greg Newsome II, Trevon Diggs, and Samuel Womack. We’re going to use Diggs and Newsome as our boundary corners, with Womack manning the slot. When Hungary goes with 2 receivers or fewer, Womack will come out, and Patrick Queen will come on to take the weak-side linebacker spot, with Bobby Okereke taking the strong side and Devin White holding the middle. Jackson and Dugger will operate at the safety spots, with Jackson being the primary deep safety in cover-1. If and when Hungary uses 4 receivers, we’ll counter by having Okereke come out and bring in Caleb Farley as the dime back. If they ever go 5 wide, we’ll play a mixture of zone coverages rather than take out one of the four down linemen with a 4-1-6 personnel.

Against the Pass:

We really want to focus on getting and keeping pressure on their QB for the entire game.  We’ll be running a four man front to bring the bulk of the pressure, combined  with various positional blitz packages. One such package will be an overloaded defensive line - we’ll have both of our interior defensive linemen shift over and stack one side of the center, and move a linebacker up into the gap (primarily White). After the snap, the DI will slant into the opposite direction and the linebacker will loop around as the blitzer for a five man rush. Other times we’ll drop the linebacker back into coverage and bring the edge rusher around the interior linemen with the linebacker blitzing straight away, to either penetrate the gap or occupy the guard for the edge rusher. Both Mack and Garrett are capable of playing the single down linemen on the other side, so we’ll be able to leverage where we’re having success against their offensive line.  We’ll primarily be playing two high safety with 3 or more receivers and single high with less than 3.

  • Maintain pressure on Dak

  • Creative blitz packages to confuse the line

  • Leverage White on blitz packages and filling the gap on overloaded defensive fronts

  • Use Sweat, Mack, and Garrett together on certain third and long packages

Against the Run:

We’ll trust our defensive line to play the run on the way to the quarterback, and our edges will be able to contain any attempts to the outside.  While Mixon warrants attention, we don’t expect him to have the game he did last week.

  • Flow to the football

  • Drop safety down into the box if needed; can still run cover-2 out of the formation

  • Corners will be closer to the line

I think Hungary can actually do a decent job defending the pass in this one with his Tampa 2 look on the surface based on what IC is trying to do, but the run game is where IC will butter it's bread as some others have pointed out. I think if he's then able to capitalize on some of his play action, it's gonna be a big disruptor to that tampa 2 and IC can hit some shots.
