I don't believe in Joseph, but the other guy is going to have to be near perfect to beat him out.

In special teams news, undrafted rookie kicker Jack Podlesny had a poor showing at the end of practice, hooking several kicks wide left before rebounding with a successful 55-yarder to cap off the day. I don't think Greg Joseph's job is in much jeopardy.

Since the departure of Marcus Sherels, the punt returner position has been a turnstile. That isn’t what you want from a position that can alter a game in a second. Last season, Jalen Reagor fumbled on four punt returns, so a capable showing in that area will be an upgrade for the Vikings. On offense, Brandon Powell is at best a capable slot receiver but is mostly used as a gadget player. He can do a little bit of everything, which will help the Vikings in their quest to grow the offense.

Size will be a concern for 5'8 Powell. When Kevin O’Connell runs 11 personnel, the goal is to have three wide receivers with the ability to block. Powell won’t bring you that. He has three fumbles in 170 career touches, which isn’t the best ratio. With a lot of competition at punt returner, Powell could be washed out by the competition due to no fault of his own.

Or, Powell has played for O’Connell before and that camaraderie and chemistry will help him make the team. The Vikings have a need at punt returner and Powell will likely win that job unless a UDFA like Malik Knowles shows out in a major way during camp. Expect Powell to make the roster as the punt returner and the fifth or sixth wide receiver.

Wonder how long it will be until they start tweaking the rules to make punt returns as rare and meaningless as kickoff returns.

Really, they should make KRs more similar to punt returns, which they could do by just using the XFL rules.

They could just make them punt from the 35......and require teams to line up like a normal punt *some number of blockers on the receiving team by the line*. That reduces the number of guys running full speed into each other....and increases the number of return opportunities.

Actually, regular punting for kickoffs would be pretty great. Only need one guy instead of rostering a KR. Plus if they botch the snap, or there's a block, it could alter games in a way other than a return.

Seems like an easy fix for the KO issues......Even if they hit a normal punt that is fair caught, most teams start between the 20 and 25......way less injuries. Way less.

Bally Sports’ Sam Ekstrom posted on the X app, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday, “ST coordinator Matt Daniels speaking at Vikings camp. Insists it is very much a ‘kicking competition’ between Greg Joseph and Jack Podlesny.”

Fighting for a spot on the roster, Tuesday was a massive day for Tay Gowan. He balled out in every drill. In special teams drills, he was a physical monster not allowing players to get past him in coverage drills.

In coverage, he was just as good. Gowan was attacking the football and staying with every receiver he was covering. Gowan is at best going to be the fifth cornerback on this team, but the special teams acumen will likely have him filling the role Kris Boyd left.

Going into training camp, NaJee Thompson wasn’t going to make the team as a cornerback, it was always going to be as a special teams player. He thrives in that environment and was showing so during practice. He was physical, worked well through blockers and was relentless in his pursuit during drills. He is going to be a difficult cut if that translates to the preseason.

The Vikings had been running strong through their competition at kicker, but they experienced a mixed bag on Thursday.

Greg Joseph capped the 2-minute drill by the first team offense and defense with a 44-yard field goal.

Even though the 2-minute drill by the second team ended with the interception by Williams, the Vikings had undrafted rookie Jack Podlesny kick from 48 yards. He made that one but missed wide left from the distance of an extra point. Podlesny bounced back with successful kicks from 45 and 50 yards.

Joseph then returned for a round of kicks. He was successful from the distance of an extra point but was wide left from 41, good from 45 and 48, wide left from 53 and 58 before drilling another 58-yarder down the middle.

Greg Joseph has been with Minnesota for two seasons but the pressure is on. Last season, the kicker made 78 percent of his kicks, down from 86 percent the year before. He also missed six extra points, down to 87 percent in that measure from 90 percent in 2021. And that’s not all. His touchback percentage dipped to 60.7 percent from 80.9 percent. Those numbers are cause for concern for the Vikings, especially because his missed extra points were costly at times.

Now he’s got to beat out Jack Podlesny, an undrafted free agent out of Georgia, who is reportedly performing well enough in training camp to have opened up a kicking competition.

Joseph was reliable from inside 50 yards last year — when he wasn’t attempting extra points at least — and that reliability could save his job. However, the last thing an NFL team wants to worry about is the kicker making extra points. Joseph has missed 10 over the last two seasons.

If Podlesny can convince the team he’s more trustworthy, Joseph would be a simple cut.

what say ye, o clan of brothers...? yea or nay on cutting Joseph and going with Podlesny?

obviously that decision will be made after the preseason games, or at least presumably, but if you had to do it now....?

I think continuity, at this point, is the important thing. Unless the new guy just blows them away in the preseason games, I would stick with Joseph. He’s up and down, but that’s what you get if you don’t have an elite kicker. Joseph made some huge kicks last year. Yes, the XPs are maddening. But he was also pretty clutch. Bringing back the same LS, Holder, and Kicker just makes more sense to me. That said, I won’t lose sleep either way.

They could always give Robbie Gould a call.
