2025 NBA DRAFT

nba-draft-2021-adam-silver.png

Entering this draft my roster is much different than the past two drafts.  I really don’t have a need for a SG at all, and honestly won’t consider taking one with any of my picks. PG and C are my biggest needs but if a superstar SF were available I’d be willing to push Willis to the bench. Adding several new bigs to the roster would really help as I haven’t been able to land really any besides Stevenson in previous drafts.

The top prospect is SF Bruno Bagaric who has HOF potential with a player comparison of Lebron James. He’s a slasher only, can’t shoot, should be a decent defender eventually but he certainly doesn’t have any of the passing traits Lebron has. If Flatlyner passes on him at 1 for whatever reason I would take him at 2, simply because of the potential rating.  But he’s definitely not a superstar caliber prospect.  If I were to rank Powell, Stevenson & Bagaric it would be in that order.

After him there are two really nice PG prospects, PG Warren Curry and PG Lonnie Bonner. Curry is a pass first PG who can also shoot (88 3 pointer) with great athleticism (90 LQ, 90 SPD, 81 ACC, 81 VERT, and the fastest Speed w Ball in the draft at 97). His 4 badges are all playmaking (Handles For Days, Hyperdrive, Needle Threader, & Unpluckable). He’s also a good perimeter defender, with 86 Steal rating which is the highest in this class. He would be an instant starter for me at the PG position. Then there’s Bonner, who’s shorter at 5’10”, but has more badges (Fearless Finisher, Ankle Breaker, Dimer, Needle Threader, Quick First Step, Interceptor, & Pick Dodger). His 90 3 pointer is slightly better, but his 88 speed on ball is inferior and 64 steal rating is way inferior. His athleticism (84 LQ, 85 SPD, 99 ACC, 98 VERT) is comparable if not better other than speed with the ball. They both have the same potential rating and player comparison. I give the slight edge to Curry because he’s slightly bigger, faster and that steal rating.

After those three prospects I think there is a dropoff in talent to the next tier of players. The next tier of guys is three Center prospects. C Lonny Thompson, C Sarunas Vugrinec & C Calbert Weaver are all very different. Thompson is big with a 7’7” wingspan and has one of the highest potential ratings in this draft class. He also has 4 badges (Break Starter, Boxout Beast, Brick Wall & Work Horse) and is a really good rebounder. His issues are that he isn’t athletic (41 LQ, 56 SPD, 38 ACC, 62 VERT) and has a 59 block rating, which is just abysmal. Vugrinec is a little smaller but with an acceptable 7’5” wingspan, and he’s a better athlete (50 LQ, 64 SPD, 67 ACC, 75 VERT). He’s a comparable rebounder and has a far superior 86 block rating. On top of all of this he is the highest OVR player in the class at 79 OVR. The issue is that he has no badges at all. None. I don’t know if someone with no badges can ever be a long term starter. Finally, Weaver is much small with only a 6’10” wingspan, which is more like a PF size. But he’s a good athlete for a Center (62 LQ, 79 SPD, 46 ACC, 81 VERT, and 97 STR which is highest in class). He also has a very high passing and pass vision rating for a big, at 71 and 75, which is intriguing. His 3 badges are Pogo Stick, Dropstepper and Fearless Finisher. His size and his rebounding (66 OREB, 76 DREB) are his downside.

I expect Flatlyner to take Bruno at 1, so I think my strategy is to take PG Curry at 2, and if the Clippers pass on PG Lonnie Bonner at 3 I’m going to double dip at the position.  I’m not in love with any of the bigs and think these two are BPA.  This way I will always have a high end PG on the floor.

As expected @Flatlyner took Bruno #1 overall.  I'm on the clock.

With the 2nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft the Virginia Beach select:

PG Warren Curry, Croatia

Hopefully he lives up to the Curry name. All 3 mocks have the Clippers taking SG Dennis Terry at pick 3 so I would be shocked if they didn't pick him.  Wow, the Clippers took Center Lonny Thompson at 3.  I'm on the clock again.

With the 4th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft the Virginia Beach select:

PG Lonnie Bonner, Santa Clara

I'm going to be stacked at Guard now. This pick also blocks @Flatlyner from getting Bonner and PG is one of his biggest needs.

Flatlyner took Center Sarunas Vugrinec at 5, looks like the top of our boards were pretty similar.

Man these picks really fly by you can't even keep track of who is gone or still available.

Cedric Hill, Owen Schultz, Brandon Fleming and Emmanuel Sirvydis all went in the first round and are off the board.

Flatlyner picks before me in the 2nd.  He took SG Chris Blair, I didn't even scout SGs cause I knew I wouldn't draft one.

With the 32nd overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft the Virginia Beach select:

C Ronald Nealy, Iowa State

Development big who with a good block rating and can rebound.

With the 44th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft the Virginia Beach select:

PF Clark Burks, Xavier

I was going to take Gregory Lewis but he was gone.  I was looking for a backup PF.

With the 51st overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft the Virginia Beach select:

PF Raymond Bailey, High School

Only him and Dunleavy were left on my board.  I took him because he had higher potential rating.

That wraps the draft.

In this game, do they high potential studs who go #1 ever turn out a dud?  The #1 pick busts that happen in real life should happen from time to time in the game as well.

They do.  They do it through the peak start/end age and boom/bust system that is set for every player.  The peak start seems to throttle a young player more than the boom/bust does, in my experience.

I believe they said they're "rerolling" until they get classes that they like though, so you might not see it as much here as you would if you were just playing straight.

Ya, to add on to this I'll say to that there is some variance to the scouting.  All of the Potential Ratings you're seeing posted here are from my Scout and not @Flatlyner 's. After reviewing several drafts we have seen that his scout is more accurate than mine.

Yes, I hired the best scout I could find after he screwed me in the first draft, showing that Aldridge was far better then he actually was.  Aldridge has developed a bit, but, he is no where near what the scouts showed me still.  I've checked on several prospects, and my scout is pretty accurate or close to actual ratings.

I had a hard time deciding between C Vugrinec and C Weaver.  There were times I had decided to go with Weaver, and then I'd swing back to Vug.   I almost actually took Weaver simply because I didn't want to say or spell out Vugrinec ever again.   In the end, I got on the clock and went with what my original thoughts were, that Vug was a superior prospect and only lacked badges now.  He has a far higher potential rating, so I think those badges will come after progression.  Either way, I knew I'd have regrets with either pick.  Honestly, was just planning on grabbing Curry or Bonner (pronounced BONE-ER forever more), but MK screwed me over, as usual.

I’m so used to busted halfassed madden that the concept of having a scout that is wrong about a player is incredible to me

2K has its own set of issues in their "franchise" mode, but the depth they put into completely obliterates what Madden has been putting out.  It's free on PS+ right now, if you have a playstation (I can't remember if you do or not.)  Not to derail this thread, but definitely worth checking out, just for the MyEras mode alone, imo.
