Hungary Hippos

Overview / Prologue:

The New Orleans Jazz parade their way into Hungary territory fresh off a Kaiju clobbering the likes of which made Charlie Day weep. Simultaneously the Hippos might be seen from outside observers to have fumbled the chance to capitalize and open the season 2-1. To that I say….harrumph. We wanted to be 1-1-1.  A bunch of millennial girls with daddy issues informed us that 1:11 is our team’s new Angel number and that it is our guardian angel sign of both new beginnings and a spiritual awakening. I present to you these 2 concepts – (1) the belief in checks notes………..spiritual numbers will protect us against a Bosa led pass rush, and (2) the Hungary Week 4 victory is written in the stars.

Offense:

Ratio: 55 % run / 45 % pass ratio (to cut-down on the impact of the Jazz DLine pressure)

Playbook: West Coast Offense

The goal for Hungary in this game is to apply a consistent ground game to keep the Jazz DL honest, keep time of possession even or on our side, and limit the pass rush impact when Geno does drop back.

The key to this run heavy approach will be to keep up the hot hand approach to our RB core that we utilized to our strength in week 2. Our crop of backs is extremely deep and by leaning on this group of Robinson, Mixon, Cook, and White we can ensure that either a single or even multiple unexpected injuries will not in any way derail our gameplan. Our backs will stay fresh while the Jazz DL won’t and more importantly it will give Geno more time on his drop-backs.

Continuing the them of protecting Geno and limiting the pass rush, our passing game will utilize mainly quick drop-backs, play action passes, and a plethora of screen passes to our stable of capable backs. We like our plucky OL to withstand the pressure with the plan of Geno not holding onto the ball long and we have rewarded our OL by letting them run block a ton in this game.

Our receiving personnel also support this strategy. The physicality of Metcalf and Hockenson will come in huge in our short passing game and set-up well for us to pick-up up short 2nd and 3rd down conversions. We will also lean on the experience of Tyler Lockett when we do take play-action shots and surprise the defense.

We like how our strategy will play into the time of possession strategy, lean into our RB depth strength, and keep our defense much fresher than if we tried to battle through the air all game.

Defense:

Base: Cover 2 Shell

The strength of the Hungary defense continues to be our defensive line. Our edge rushers Maxx Crosby and Will Anderson were our big incoming off-season additions and more than anything have allowed us to primarily roll with a 4 man pass rush than can be effective. As each week goes on, it also becomes clear that our interior DL is performing better than expected with Fletcher Cox and Ogunjobi really adding to this defensive pass rush strength. We anticipate our back-up DL to be a nice change of pace, keeping our main 4 fresh and the career resurgence of Javon Kinlaw will play into this so we can keep up the QB pressures while spelling Cox and Ogunjobi.

Because this is Josh Allen both the pressure cited above will be important and our line-backers respecting the run game. Additionally, we are also excited to be able to deploy Julius Brents and showcase the improvement he brings to our starting secondary and his physicality, which is an extra bonus in a defensive match-up against Josh Allen and the x-factor that is Deebo Samuel.

This secondary that is improved from past weeks will mix in zone, press, and off man coverage throughout the game to present different looks and seek those opportunistic turnovers that Josh Allen can provide us. With our back-up CB options we can also use the Cover 4 when 4+ WR looks are sent out by the Jazz.

This is a Hungary defense that is better suited to stand its grown than the start of our year and we will carry that challenge against this Josh Allen led offense this week. We will apply pressure, play physically, and be opportunistic.

Best of luck to New Orleans in this match-up!

New Orleans

Gameplan:

Offense:

Up Tempo Offense

We feel as though we have a big talent advantage on the offensive side of the ball versus Hungary's defense, so we're going to look to run a quicker offense, incorporating a fair bit of no huddle to ensure that Hungary's D isn't able to settle and execute their game plan as expected, as well as ensure the time they have to adjust personnel to certain formations or try and recognise plays is limited.

Another reason why we're taking this approach is Hungary's lack of healthy defensive tackles. As Hungary only has 3 healthy defensive tackles, and we posses the meanest running back in football with Derrick Henry, it's a no brainer to play quick to limit the substitutions for these guys in the middle after we wear them down with a number of Henry runs up the middle. A successful day for us could very well see as many as 50 carries depending on the scoreboard.

Mostert and Conner's roles both growing. While Henry will be the primary back (however rotating intermittently), Conner will also see 3rd and goal / 3rd and short yardage while Mostert will take the 3rd and longer assignments as well as being the favoured change of pace with Henry when he needs a spell.

Once we've started to wear the DL thin for Hungary, we'll look to introduce more option based plays with Josh's legs moving towards the focus, but not necessarily as a runner but instead escaping the pocket and getting away from the tiring defenders to be able hit our receivers down field on more broken down, schoolboy type plays.

Three TE Sets:

Building on last week, we'll continue to be running a number of three TE sets which will feature Deebo in the backfield as a runner alongside Allen, and either Moore or Hopkins as the sole wideout. Hurst, Henry and Schultz will be the three tight ends, each offering a viable target in the passing game as well as being competent blockers in the run game. This will take some concepts from Greg Roman Ravens as we'll look to have Allen play some read-option and either run, or look for the quick flip to a TE who's faked a block and run a simple route, such as rolling out in the flats. Using misdirection and have plays constantly cutting across field will also put that little bit of extra stress on Hungary's defensive tackles to ensure that by the end of the game, they're unable to make any impact whatsoever.

Safety in the passing game and focus on yards after the catch:

Screens, slants and rub routes will be the name of the game here as getting the ball into Deebo and DJ's hands with space to run will be what adds that big play element to our offense to go with the grinding run game. We'll have Moore and Samuel lining up on the same side of the field together commonly, with the plan for one to pick a defender for the other and let them get the ball near the LOS with room to work. Moore will generally look to be the deeper threat to, hopefully drawing double coverage deeper and letting Deebo benefit from single coverage. Hopkins will be our possession guy on the other side of the field and whenever he draws an easier one-on-one assignment, Allen will look to him to move the chains.

While we'll throw down a number of deeper shots as is a must when you've got Allen's cannon in the backfield, we always are very aware that turnovers are what will invite Hungary into the game. So the message is very clear that shorter, high percentage passes, like the ones above, is where the focus lies. This will also feed in to helping the up tempo offensive approach and keeping the defensive tackles constantly in use and fighting more than their rotational roles would ordinarily require.

Defense:

4 Man Pressure:

Like last week, our focus is going to be generating 4 man pressure. With our defensive line being as good as they come, our plan we'll continue to use 4 rushers for the majority of the time to oppose Hungary's passing game. Rotation will also be the name of the game, with a particular shoutout being necessary for the emergence of Tuipulotu being a great bonus for us and we'll look to rotate him with ZaDarius Smith, who will often slide inside to take one of the DTs positions and add extra pass-rushing might.

Watch the Deep ball

Hungary has a group of wideouts that can definitely do some damage, especially when it comes to stretching the field, so we're going to ensure that we have at least one safety deep to assist on any longer passes. We've introduced Walker Jr. and Amos into the lineup to add a bit more of a coverage flavour to the short-intermediate, allowing us to send Mathieu back as our deeper safety and helping our cornerbacks not worry about the passing game as much in the shorter middle of the field.

Coverage:

In terms of coverage, it will be the usual cover 1 for New Orleans, with some press man concepts nearer the line of scrimmage. Jamming a receiver and putting timing off we feel will make a big difference for us as while Geno has performed strongly of late, taking away his top options and collapsing on him with a non-blitzing front-four will put him under pressure.

DK Metcalf - James Bradberry

DPJ - Stephon Gilmore

Hockenson - Anthony Walker

Running back - Adrian Amos

Tyler Lockett - Mike Hilton

Rock Ya-Sin or Cam Taylor Britt will come in as CB4 or CB5 if Hungary wants to go with 4 or more wide, while the cover 1 base will stay where appropriate.

Scherff. Not Sherriff or whatever the **** PR keeps putting in there. Scherff. Man is a nine-year vet, it's not like this is a rookie whose name you're just now having to learn.

I really like both teams' offensive plans in this one. I have a bit of skepticism for the 3 TE sets New Orleans wants to use, but it's not like their other options at WR are blowing up the NFL, so I get where NO is coming from in terms of getting their best personnel on the field.

Ultimately, I think the lack of depth on the interior and the relatively poor CB play for Hungary gives the Jazz the advantage.

NO has 6 players with 150+ yards receiving. Only Singapore has more.

This is one is super tight. On one hand, I think New Orleans is the better team by a fair margin. In fact, I think they're quite clearly the best team in the league at this point. But I kinda like Hungary plan more. I think the ball control offense is a great idea and I think it works decently for them. I also think Hockenson is well utilized and will be super effective to move the chains against Walker Jr. On the other side, the idea to tire out Hungary defensive front is ok, but it would have been more effective with a quick passing game imho, especially against that corner group.

In the end, I think talent prevail but Hungary almost steals this one. 31-28 New Orleans
