In Flores We Trust - How Good Can This Defense Be?

Remember when this defense didn't have enough talent during preseason?

They've definitely exceeded expectations. Still could use more talent though. I hope Hunter and Flores stick around and we see what they both can do with an infusion of talent.

They can always get more talented. I just remember someone saying that this defensive roster was worse than the one Flores had in his first year in Miami. I think recency bias with Donatell was influencing perception quite a bit.

Brian Flores has had a strong first season as defensive coordinator, with the Vikings 13th in the NFL in yards allowed per game and 10th in yards allowed per play. They're also 12th in rushing yards allowed per game and fifth in rushing yards allowed per play. These are by far their best rankings since 2018.

Edge rusher Marcus Davenport, Minnesota's most important free agent signing, has missed the majority of the season because of injuries to both ankles. What's more, Flores has been without outside linebackers coach Mike Smith since training camp and defensive line coach Chris Rumph for the last three games, as both are on personal leave.

Questioning the talent, even now, is still warranted.

The massive leaps forward from Bynum and Metellus wasn't foreseeable, nor was the total resurgence of Hunter and Hicks

And still the corners and lineman are really really suspect.

So yes, there is more here to work with then we thought but this group is absolutely punching above their weight.

Perhaps some leaps forward, but also not miscasting players to fit a scheme is super important. Hicks, Metellus, Bynum, and even Harrison Smith are doing the things that they are good at. I don’t think they suddenly got better, I think they were being asked to do things that weren’t maximizing their talents. Be great at something, not ok or worse at everything.

Didn't realize that this is all happening down two position coaches; please don't go B-Flo!

I knew about the Mike Smith thing, because Pettine has been helping out the assistant (Albury, I believe) all season long thus far.  I'm not sure I knew that Rumph was still gone.

I know I didn't know that Ben Ellefson is now a member of the coaching staff...I thought he was still playing TE somewhere.  Ha!

They should have brought a formar player back to be an assistant d-line coach.  Who would be the best? Allen would be fun,  but isn't Udeze coaching somewhere?

Udeze was with the Titans as their assistant DL coach.

He's with the Houston Cougars as a pass rush specialist coach now.
