49ersfan
I'd only support this if there was a 2nd bye week. Players need more rest. It would be good for owners/broadcast networks/fans too - two more weeks of games, betting, an extra home game of stadium revenue, etc

This is not a sport you can play on three days rest NFL doesn't care though. They know the fans will most likely be watching on a Thursday night. Not out enjoying the nightlife of a Saturday Night. Less viewers, less Money 💰

They are too Greedy to give that revenue up. Potentially change TNF to Saturday Night Football, extra 2 days rest? That I could see. 3 straight nights of NFL. College Football night games, be damn. This would be so much better for the players.. and yeah who cares about CFB Edited March 4 by adamq
Phinsesq
Was not a fan of 17 games, even less of a fan of 18. If the seasons were 16 games versus 17 or 18, there would still be just as much drama in that final week. The league will get what it wants though, and I will still watch. I'd give the players a second bye week though. I think they did that one year in like 92 or 93 or something. 20 weeks seems like a really long season, but again, whatever. It was abandoned after that one season as many teams complained that it threw them off their rythym. But if we're going to an 18 game schedule, two bye weeks will definitely be necessary
Trentwannabe
League gets: 18 games Players get: 2 Bye weeks No franchise/transition tags Free agency after 3 years for rookies.
minutemancl
18 games and 2 bye weeks puts the Super Bowl the Sunday of President's Day Weekend every year, meaning the Monday after the Super Bowl is a holiday every year. Sign me up for that.
TakeTheBallDeep
What about expanding the roster size? With the increasing cap, more games, in theory it would be good for more guys to have jobs...any downside?

The reasons against it in the past have been "thats what the practice squad is for" and "more roster spots would lead to more specialists being rostered". There are also cap implications but I for one would like them to expand up to 58 or maybe
lancerman
17 games was just a bridge to get to 18 and everyone knew it.
PossibleCabbage
Since the NFL is unlikely to play so many games as to dilute their product, the idea of lengthening the season is fine. Like it doesn't really matter if the Superbowl is in late February or even March. The question is what is the NFLPA going to be able to extract for an additional game. I think they're much more likely to focus on basic economic issues like "post-playing career support" and "bigger minimum salaries" than they are flashy ones like "no more tags" (an issue that affects like 6-12 people/year, when the union is 2400+) or "guaranteed extra bye week" (I suspect fans hate the idea of "playing on 3 days rest" more than the players do.)

With that in mind, it makes me wonder why they didn't already go for an 18-game schedule off the bat since the NFL already has the longest offseason of any major sports league.
